Dr. Godfrey nails it in this book. You can tell he had a good time writing this book and the reader enjoys it just as much. The Psalter is the most unique part of the Bible and many Christians aren’t taking advantage of it. This book gives you a taste of the profound treasure that is the book of Psalms.

A long time back, I had a pastor encourage me during a time of spiritual dryness and emotional turmoil to spend time in the Psalms. He felt that an extended focus on the praise of God would help me to turn away from my self-focus and have the joy of my salvation restored. He was correct. And anytime since that I have spent any sort of significant time in the Psalms, I have been richly rewarded. I know that God’s Word is a vehicle through which he blesses his children with his presence, and I know that the Psalms, for whatever reason, seem especially to reflect this truth, but I do not know the Psalms as greatly as I want. Dr. Godfrey’s new volume from Reformation Trust looks like it will rectify that particular problem.Broken into six sections (along with an introduction and conclusion), Godfrey guides the reader through each book of the Psalms, showing specific thematic emphases of each book, as well as overarching themes throughout. Specific Psalms from each section are chosen and investigated in depth (relatively… this is a short book after all), and Godfrey does a good job of looking at literary aspects (chiastic poetry, acrostics, etc.) while emphasizing the Christocentric nature of the Psalms necessary for a proper and productive reading.More than anything, and this cannot be discounted, Godfrey encourages the reader time and again to invest in reading and meditating on the words of the Psalter. Rapid reading is not a fruitful approach to any poetry, especially God’s inspired poetry. Godfrey’s point that there is much gold to be found on the surface of the Psalms is correct, but his qualifying statement is even more so: “The Psalms are like a mine with ever new depths to reach and ever more gold to find. They reward abundantly whatever effort we make to know them better.”Learning to Love the Psalms both encourages and equips a greater and more consistent engagement with the hymnbook of Scripture. For that, I cannot recommend it highly enough.

This is a fantastic book, It has provided great insight into several aspects of the Psalms to help me better understand and learn from the Psalms, such as the features of Hebrew poetry versus English poetry. This book is a great complement to the Video series by Dr. Godfrey of the same title. Get both, and learn to love the Psalms!

Brings increased clarity to the Psalms and has several probing questions at the end of each chapter. I first read the book through with my morning devotional, but will be taking a closer look and answering those questions with a more in depth study the second time around.

It was beyond my expectations. I have enjoyed learning how to apply them to my life.

Excellent book by a well-respected theologian.
