The story was interesting, and the character development was progressing along nicely, but then all of a sudden, it's like someone told Emily Giffin "you need to wrap this up", and everything sped up dramatically! It felt very rushed in the later half of the book.

I was sadly disappointed with this novel. I usually adore Emily Giffins work, but not so much with this one. It WAS a good storyline that had me finishing in about 3 days. But there was just so much political vomit! I felt as though Giffin was attempting to sway the reader into viewing most, if not all, wealthy, conservative/republican white people (which I am far from) as low-key racists, sexists philanderers who only look out for number 1 at ANY cost. I understand the want/need to be able to relate to readers & to stay relevant, but it just felt to me that Giffin overly interjected her own political bias. And as other reviewers have mentioned, the ending seem rushed & there was no REAL closer given everything that happened as the plot unfolded, just a few references in the epilogue. Many questions are left unanswered.

I honestly felt my IQ lowering as I read this book. I enjoyed her first few books but they have progressively gotten worse. The narrative of the mother is laughable and totally unrealistic, and the ending felt rushed. I am baffled that there are so many good reviews of this book

Summary:Have you ever stopped and wondered how you got somewhere? With this man, living this life? Nina Browning should be ecstatic. She is part of the Nashville elite with a charismatic husband and a son that was just accepted into Princeton. It all seems wrong, though. The preoccupation with material wealth, the inability to really connect with her husband or son… this just isn’t who she is. Any of it.Tom is desperately trying to be a good father to Lyla, his beautiful and intelligent daughter. When she got a scholarship to Windsor Academy he is a bit worried, but very proud. Lyla is trying to keep up with her classmates both academically and socially. It’s a different world and sometimes the differences are glaring.A picture snapped in a moment of drunkenness spins out of control. Windsor Academy is going insane with rumors and casting blame. In the eye of the scandal are Tom, Lyla and Nina. Each one is forced to question the relationships of those closest to them, and who they really are.My thoughts:I could not put this book down. It was gorgeously written, and moving. The trio of narratives was an interesting touch. I really enjoyed being able to see more of these characters, their thoughts and motives. These were really interesting, well developed characters. I loved Lyla especially. Tom with the chip on his shoulder and Nina who desperately wants to be seen as a good woman. As far as the plot goes, I found it really intriguing and I loved the different twists and turns that kept me guessing. Through out the book I both loathed and loved certain characters, wanting to believe in them, but not knowing if I can. It’s definitely a different world. I also like how they portrayed the young victim- it was very believable. The horror, shame, inability to believe, and the desire to let it all just fade away. Her strength was also something I really loved. I feel like this book has a lot of adult moments, but also a lot that older teens would like as well. For me, this is a five star book.On the adult content scale, this is pretty high. There’s a lot of language and sexual content as well as drinking. While I would, as I said, see no issue with an older and more mature teen reading it, I have to say it’s meant for adults. I give it an eight.I was lucky enough to receive an eARC of this book from Netgalley and Random House Publishing in exchange for an honest review. My thanks!

I've read a good many of Emily Giffin's books and she's definitely a talented author, but don't go into this one expecting a lighthearted rom-com. The story here, despite its fairly festive, and slightly deceptive cover and title, is no romantic romp. In her more recent novels, Giffin has trended towards more serious family drama, and with this one she jumps into that deep end for sure. This is the story of the Brownings, one of Nashville's golden couples whose son, Finch, attends a prestigious private school and whose parents, old money Kirk, and the less entrenched Nina, rule the social scene. Tom, on the other hand, is a (mostly) single father, whose daughter, Lyla, attends Windsor Academy on scholarship. The book and marketing are extremely coy about how the two families become inextricably intertwined, though it's revealed very early on and is the entire crux of the book, but if you don't want to know, skip to after the next ellipses ...[slight spoiler warning]While his parents attend yet another benefit, Princeton-bound Finch Snapchats a picture of a passed out, partially disrobed Lyla captioned with a racist joke, which soon the whole school has seen and changes both their lives.[/end small spoiler]... How both sets of parents, and children, handle the fallout, is the entire story. The focus is very much on the parents here, namely Tom and Nina, both of whom come at the issue with their kids in different ways due to their own, troubled pasts, which are fairly quickly revealed. Lyla gets a bit more attention in the story, but Finch and Kirk have a fairly skimpy place in this tale. This is fast-paced and, while not always 100% credible—I think the author likes Nina way more than I, the reader, did—it does set up some semi-interesting moral dilemmas, though none are handled especially subtly. It's also a terrifying read as a parent, as you see the many, many ways kids can make incredibly bad, life-changing decisions in mere seconds, which we are completely unable to protect them from. Not that Giffin leans in too much to that aspect, making pretty clear moral judgements that will allow most readers to fall comfortably into the, "this could never happen to me," camp. But, I could see a similar, more nuanced scenario that would ultimately make for a more interesting story, where the moral black and white is much more shades of gray and yeah-it-COULD-happen-to-you.I wavered between three and four stars here, and settled on the latter most because this one was fast-paced and Giffin is an adapt author who knows how to tease out a page turner. ALL WE EVER WANTED kept me engaged until the end, even through its more predictable plot points and ultimately unsatisfying ending, and I finished it in just two settings. Not terribly deep, it's still a decent read.

I gave this book 1 star because zero was not an option. This book is a string of cliches made worse by weak characters, weak plot and a totally predictable ending. A really disappointing book - my first and last book by this author. If you are like the characters in this book who are so rich they never qudestion wasting their money buy this book but don't waste your time reading it.

This book is uplifting and got me thinking of different ways to stay positive and keep my mental health in a good state. I lead a very busy life looking after my son and working a hectic, stressful full time job. Plus I’m up early in the morning to get to the gym because exercise keeps me going and is one of my motivators. Sometimes we lose focus and the stress gets on top of us and we start to get run down and don’t even realize it. It takes a book like this to make us realize we have to take care of our mental health as well as our physical health. I spend so much time weight lifting and focusing on becoming stronger than I neglect my mind and that’s just as important if not more. Mental health requires inner strength to deal with all the challenges that life throws at you. It requires training just like that physical body needs training. This book gives you information on mental strength and how to achieve it and how to train yourself to keep it. One aspect it discusses is being more positive. Things that help with this are laughter, smiling, thinking positive thoughts, socializing with positive people, having good friends, taking care of yourself and your family and relaxing. It talks about the benefits of having positive thoughts. Each person requires different avenues and methods to finding that positive state of mind and mental strength. This book shares some ideas that might be for you such as meditation, prayer and exercise. It’s a short read and sometimes that’s all you need to get you back on that positive path toward good mental health. I received this book for free.

Pointless. This is the exact same book as another by the same author. I mean, word for word! They just changed the title. Here I was hoping for something different, this was just a complete waste of time. I gave the other a 1 star rating, so this will get the same because it's exactly the same as the other book. It's poorly organized, it offers up no value on the topic.I received a digital copy of this book free in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are 100% my own.

I picked up the kindle edition of Train Your Brain & Mental Strength : How to Train Your Brain for Mental Toughness & 7 Core Lessons to Achieve Peak Mental Performance: (Special 2 In 1 Exclusive Edition) because it appealed to my self improvement side.So it took me a while to get some time to sit down with this book, but I'm glad I have.As it says, it helps you to train your brain. I see too many people with low self-esteem, low self confidence, stress, anxiety & other signs of mental weakness. It's truly a sad state of affairs. Mental training is huge to counteract that. Think it and it shall be true. The mind is a complex and wonderful resource which is so underutilized. We have to train ourselves to think positively, to shield out the bad, to develop resistance... this book will help anyone looking to do just that. Just like any other muscle, the brain needs a workout to grow... puzzles, logic problems, etc. are a great way to do just that. Another is to use the cognitive abilities building suggestions in the book. Who wouldn't want to improve or achieve "peak mental performance"? How is this not at the top of everyone's to do list? The book isn't a difficult read, 19 chapters. The average read time is just over an hour, so why not give it a try?Definitely worth checking out.I did receive this product at a discounted rate in exchange for my honest review & unbiased opinion, but I still say check it out!

This ebook as well as others I have read from the same author are so full of great information and so helpful for people like me. There are so many details in this book and so many ideas and ways to help yourself become mentally stronger. Everything from being a positive thinker to being prepared for the worst. It is actually helping me get through the loss of a loved one right now and I don't even think that the book was intentionally written for that reason. Regardless, it is helping me. I like the straight forward, don't feel sorry for yourself book. This ebook talks about Alzheimer's, Amnesia, and the general decline of your cognitive function. I think that there is something in this book for practically everyone. I know I don't suffer from 90% of what this book talks about but there is so much information in this book about how to avoid those bad things that sometimes (more often than not) happen when we age, I know I don't want to forget who everyone around me is. And the brain fog that I suffer now, in my 30's isn't giving me much hope of keeping my memory and ability to think clearly when I am older without a lot of work. The opinions in this review are mine and mine alone.I received this ebook for free in exchange for my honest and unbiased opinion.

It takes the first 10 chapters to really get through the basics. Once you're through the obvious, this book starts to heat up and provide useful information. It becomes more educational and attacks other areas of information regarding mental strength including how the brain processes, what the difference is in memory function as well as similarties in animal brains, the role of Alzheimer's and dementia and the effect of aging. Extra information is provided that isn't necessarily "training" or strengthening your brain, but it is useful as it explains why it is important as well as how to help prevent the worst case scenarios.Disclaimer: I was provided this book for free in exchange for an honest review. The opinions expressed here are mine alone and have not been further compensated for.

Amazon.com Review

We'd better get used to chaos because it certainly isn't going anywhere. Mathematician Ian Stewart--who is also a very talented writer--shares his insights into the history and nature of the highly complex in Does God Play Dice: The New Mathematics of Chaos. While his delightful phrasings will draw in nearly every reader, those with a strong aversion to figures and formulae should understand that it will be slow going. Chaos math suffuses everything from dreaming to the motion of the planets, and Stewart's words can never match the precision of his numbers. Persistence pays off, though; there are so many "aha" moments of insight herein that it almost qualifies as a religious text. The second edition has been partially revised in the wake of 1990s research, and three exciting new chapters report on prediction and other applications of chaos mathematics. --Rob Lightner

This is the second book I read from Ian Steward. I was looking for another book on the subject of chaos, and having been impressed by a book of his called "The Mathematics of Life," I decided to read this one. I wasn't disappointed. He begins with the Greeks, Eudoxus, Ptolemy, and others and moves through time to Copernicus, Kepler, and Galilei showing how the foundations of mathematics were developed. Later we learn of the works of Euler, Lagrange and his generalized coordinates, Hamilton's work on the state of dynamical systems, and Galton's contributions to the normal distribution. As the 20th century came to a close, statistical methodology took its place alongside deterministic modeling as an equal partner.By chapter six, we are into strange attractors and flows in a plane such as sinks, sources, saddles, and limit cycles. Then there is quasiperiodicity, suspensions, solenoids, and Poincaré sections which can give us interesting pictures of the dynamical behavior. Any text on chaos is, of course, going to cover logistic mapping and bifurcation diagrams, as well - so does Steward. Chapter ten introduces Mitchell Feigenbaum and the Feigenvalue - a value of 4.669 - the rate at which successive period doublings accumulate faster and faster. Chapter eleven gets into fractals, Julia sets and the infamous Mandelbrot set.I found chapter sixteen very interesting. I'll just quote Steward here, "The central thrust of the chapter is the possibility of changing the theoretical framework of quantum mechanics altogether, replacing quantum uncertainty by deterministic chaos as Einstein would have liked." As Steward delves into concepts such as quanta; wave functions; spin; eigenfunctions; decoherence; the Einstein, Podolsky, and Rosen paradox and other concepts, he exposes what he feels are some loopholes in the arguments - all very fascinating. His alternate explanation of "spooky action at a distance" or quantum entanglement eliminates the need for information to travel at speeds exceeding the speed of light. I found his argument convincing - too lengthy to describe here. In the last chapter, the discussion turns to complexity theory and how it relates to chaos.Steward presents here for us, I feel, an interesting introduction to the world of chaos - the world we live in incidentally. This is an in depth discussion of the subject, but I feel that Steward did a remarkable job of "translating" the obtuse mathematics and concepts to an understandable level for someone not expert in the field. Certainly an excellent book, and I highly recommend it.By the way, as Steward says in the Epilogue, "If God played dice ... he'd win."

This is a good book for those who are either starting to learn about chaos and nonlinear dynamics or those who would just like an overall view of what the subject is about without getting bogged down into heavy-duty math. This book has two distinct themes. One is to explain the mathematical concept of chaos, and why it is both natural and inevitable. The other is to ask the rather long question "Does the mathematical model of chaos exist in the real world, and does it help us understand some of the things that we see?".This book covers a variety of subjects that might at first seem unrelated - mathematical history, various chaotic models, weather patterns, applications - but by the end of the book everything comes together to give you a good overall view of the field. This second edition is mainly different from the first in the added three chapters on applications. These chapters cover prediction in chaotic systems, the control of chaotic systems, and then there is a speculative chapter that attempts to explain how the concept of chaos might lead to a new answer to Einstein's famous question which is also the title of this book. This book requires more imagination and an ability to visualize than a talent for mathematics, and it makes a good introduction to more technical books on the subject such as "Nonlinear Dynamics and Chaos" by Strogatz. Of course, that book requires much more in the way of mathematical maturity. This book looks more at the forest, the Strogatz book looks more at the trees.

An interesting and fun introduction to chaos. Stewart writes very well and often makes keen and insightful observations. I learned a great deal and was inspired to read other books on this fascinating topic. There were a few things I didn't like, but to be honest they are not major: 1) The deliberate avoidance of mathematical detail in this book, which does indeed present some very deep mathematical concepts, is very odd and sometimes unhelpful. Odd, for example, as when in the midst of a chapter on quantum theory Stewart takes time to painstakingly tell the reader what an absolute value is. Or, when he's describing how to perform calculations to generate chaos he stops for a paragraph to explain what it means to square a variable. Is it really possible that readers who lack such rudimentary math skills would be reading this book?? 2) For my tastes, there's way too much God talk in this book. Stewart clearly is not doing this for any religious reason - but it's odd because I have no idea why he finds it necessary to so often toss in sentences about God doing this or God thinking that, or God blah blah blah. By the end - especially at the literal end and the stupid joke in the epilogue - it really gets tiresome.

I am a college-educated, non-math major, numbers-oriented senior citizen who wanted to find out what Chaos Theory is. I got this book out of my local library to see whether I should purchase it. It reads easily, even entertainingly, so I decided to order it.However, the newest edition in paperback has very very fine print--even with reading glasses! I returned this edition, and am trying again with the older edition in hardback (same ISBN as the library book). As others have noted, this book does not go into the "deep" mathematics of Chaos. However, the material IS challenging.

The Winter Soldier, by Daniel Mason

Review

"The Winter Soldier brims with improbable narrative pleasures...These pages crackle with excitement--and charging cavalries, false identities, arranged marriages, scheming industrialists and missing persons...Within the meticulously researched and magnificently realized backdrop of European dissolution, Mason finds his few lost souls, and shepherds them toward an elusive peace. Lucius's 'dream of being able to see another person's thinking' is not only the controlling metaphor of The Winter Soldier, but the work of literature more broadly. Lucius may fail, but the novel he carries is a spectacular success."―Anthony Marra, New York Times"The beauty of Mason's new novel persists even through scenes of unspeakable agony. That tension reflects the span of his talent...The story that unfolds in this forsaken place is so captivating that you may feel as unable to leave it as Lucius does."―Ron Charles, Washington Post"I have been a Daniel Mason fan since The Piano Tuner. His abilities as a storyteller and a writer of the most gorgeous prose leave you wanting more. The Winter Soldier is a tour de force. I was immersed in the grandeur of Imperial Vienna and the frozen battlefields of the Eastern Front, and in this beautiful tale of love and war, and of our frailty and resilience in the face of both."―Abraham Verghese, bestselling author of Cutting for Stone"Epic...Urgent, cinematically beautiful...Lucius is an irresistible protagonist...Not only does Mason make every crumb of pertinent history, culture, and geography so real throughout this saga that a reader feels instantly teleported into all of it, [but] The Winter Soldier delivers, in shocking detail, a relentless inventory of the era's medical knowledge and practices...Mason has created a magnificent world, urging us to savor every grain of it."―Joan Frank, San Francisco Chronicle"As lyrical as a Viennese waltz and as delicate as crystal, Mason's riveting novel examines the human heart and the wounds of war with clear eyes and compassion."―People"The Winter Soldier held me by the throat from the first lyrical page to the last. A story which manages to be as original as it is timeless, and above all, credible."―Emma Donoghue, bestselling author of Room"Part mystery, part war story, part romance, The Winter Soldier is a dream of a novel--impeccably researched and totally immersive. The unsinkable Margarete is a mesmerizing character, and the book's investigation into the psychiatric toll of war on its combatants could not be more timely. This novel convinces you with every sentence."―Anthony Doerr, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of All the Light We Cannot See"What I've found most remarkable about Mason's fiction is the quality of his revelations, his ability to unveil temperaments, habits, natures...Although The Winter Soldier contains some of the most brutal moments of suffering I've encountered in fiction, they're never there just to move the story along. They allow the reader to sit very close to someone in great pain and listen to him."―Wyatt Mason, New York Times Magazine"So real, so rich and detailed, that the room in which I was reading vanished. I was transported to a lost world of the past. Suspenseful, thrilling, aching with emotion. Living with Lucius and Margarete, it was the First World War as I have never felt it."―Andrew Sean Greer, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Less"In the tradition of Cold Mountain and Doctor Zhivago, Daniel Mason's new novel is a gloriously gripping story of love, war, and the marvel of human endurance. Sweeping yet intimate, brutal yet tender, it kept me up, it broke my heart, and it made me remember yet again just how a good book--a really good book--rekindles our love of life."―Julia Glass, National Book Award-winning author of Three Junes and A House Among the Trees

This coming November 11th will the 100th anniversary of the Armistice that ended The Great War, now known as World War One. Daniel Mason's glorious novel of that war, "The Winter Soldier", is a must-read for anyone who appreciates excellent historical fiction and a profoundly gripping love story.Lucius Krzelewski is 22 years old, a medical student from Vienna, sent to act as a doctor at a Regimental Hospital in the Carpathian mountains in the winter of 1915. When Lucius arrives at the “hospital” it’s not at all what he expected, but HE is not what they expected, either. Met by the hospital's only remaining nurse, Sister Margarete, she quickly surmises Lucius’ inexperience and lack of practical training. Sister Margarete ends up being his greatest teacher.Mason's careful and vivid descriptions of the medical practices of the time, and the brutality of the war are not for the squeamish. Central to the plot is "the winter soldier", a young man named Horvath, who is brought in with severe "shell shock". Author Daniel Mason, according to the cover notes, is a professor of psychiatry at Stanford, so it is not surprising that his knowledge of neurological disorders connected with WWI is vast, and thus informs Lucius' care of the afflicted. What an utter tragedy that war was. Some high points of the novel are:- A riveting and revolting description of catheterizing a moving target!- Sister Margarete's fabulously grotesque and visceral monologue on lice. You'll start to itch!- A wonderfully inventive ploy against a first tier villain.- Exquisite prose with just the right amount of wit, and a protagonist who is so so wonderfully human. When I got to the last chapter I found any excuse (laundry! groceries! cleaning!) to pause, so that I could to draw it out. I did not want the novel to end - I was afraid to know what happened. I was so fully invested by then it was almost a physical reaction as I slowly turned the pages. When it came, the end was nothing I could ever have imagined. And it was perfect.

I loved this book. Dr. Mason is a word master —- his writing is beautiful. I love WWI and WW II stories. Mason just takes you right there in the war and the field hospital. Being a nurse most of my life, I particularly enjoyed reading the hardships of dealing with critically injured soldiers. Of course the love story was magnificent.

Lucius Krelewski begins his medical training in Vienna, not so much to be a healer, as to continue his passion for the study of science. In the middle of his training, WWI begins. With patriotic fervor, he enlists in the Austrian medical corps. Having barely touched any patients during his training, Lucius is sent to a remote medical outpost in the Carpathian Mountains. Here he learns both the art and craft of medicine, the tenderness of love and the barbarity of war. He encounters and is intrigued by what is now called PTSD which plagues so many of his patients. Post war, Lucius too struggles with nightmares.Mason writes a filigree of prose that borders on poetry. The reader is firmly in place in the beauty of the setting and the emotional depth of the characters. Battle scenarios are frightening in their ferocity. The anguish of Lucius and his patients is palpable. In the end, he goes on a personal odyssey to regain his love, his life and his soul. As in his novel, The Piano Tuner, Mason proves to be a master wordsmith. He creates a very human story that resonates long after the last page.

This was the most interesting book I've read in a while. The story was Human, reflective , compelling and poignant. It causes you to question your own bravado, should you find yourself in this or a similar circumstance. The characters appear real and relatable. The story heartfelt.I recommend this book to anyone that wishes to understand to trials of the unfortunate people at the mercy of the Nazi's.

The Winter Soldier is an incredible book. I learned many new words, though I did not take the time to look all of them up in the dictionary. I JUST HAD TO READ ON AND ON. I have spent many, many years reading Holocaust stories. In this book, I learned about the absolute horrors of the war for the people in the ravaged countries. I learned that there is so much more i need to learn about the people and governments that fought and were changed in the First World War. I loved Lucious and his nurse. How will Lucius go on in life after his incredible search for his nurse. How will Lucius find a new life ? The book is so fine--real literature. I hope that a movie is not made of this novel--it stands complete as a fine book. The author did so much research--and it is here in the book, along with the real thoughts and actions of the people we read about. Please Daniel Masson, write another book. I am waiting for the next book. THANK YOU.

I picked this up after a review on io9. I'm normally a fantasy lover, but I read this through in one sitting. The story does a good job of character development, and writing from a single perspective. The limitations of the characters are made apparent and exposed without limiting the story, and the writing is almost painfully evocative at times. Really loved it the first 2/3rds of the story but it kind of lost its way a bit when the world opened back up for the characters.

A wonderful book in great condition. Thank you.

First chapter. It's hard to tell if this will be a medical journal of war story as the title and Short opening implies.

great book

Great!

Great book for my 2nd graders to understand and learn subtraction. This book puts it down to their level using what they like especially boys using sharks and other sea creatures.

One of the better concept books in the market place for teaching and understanding subtraction.

Great book for teaching Habits of Mind.

Cute book!

This is also an Accelerated Reading book.

The Sharks of Ocean City are trying to go to the state swim camp. Their coach tells them the city newspaper will sponsor the team if they can swim 75 laps in one day before the end of the week. The humorous story's plot hangs on subtracting double digits. The cutesy illustrations of fish in swimwear may be amusing to younger children, they did not appeal to me. This is another book in the MathStart series. It has suggested activities and names of some other skill-related books at the end.
