I so appreciated the author's description of how the trauma of his accident and the treatment for his spinal cord injury lead to an ability to leave his body, what he calls the quiet. This book is a reference guide for life. I did not expect to be so taken in, so much a part of his trauma and transcendence. A mirror to my soul. I am going to read this book twice, maybe 3 times, so I can apply the life lessons for living whole. Beautiful writing, absolutely beautiful. I have had both feet operated on twice, and contacted an infection at the surgery center. My podiatrist said if the 6 weeks of aggressive IV antibiotics don't kill the infection, there is a possibility of amputating the big toe, but I refuse to accept that possibility. I have been an athlete since age 10 and now I'm 54. Running, biking, hot yoga, karate, etc. I'm literally at a loss about what I can do and who I am. Exercise was for my mind and my body. I feel like I have a friend or a buddy in reading Matthew's healing stories and encouraged to write my own. Thank you Matthew. Thank you. Amy

Through a series of clicks I landed on Matthew Sanford's web site where I saw a photo of a young man leaning forward from his wheel chair, reaching over to adjust a student practicing a yoga standing pose.I learned that the author is a leader in adapting Iyengar yoga to meet the needs of the individual. Matthew's mental awareness--as a result of a spinal cord injury--was literally knocked out of the lower two-thirds of his body. While doctors were able to keep him alive, he was not given the tools to reconnect his mind to his paralyzed body.Matthew describes how for years after the devastating accident, from the chest down, he experiences a "schism" or "a form of silence" between his mind and his body. During his first months in the hospital and later periods in intensive care units there was so much pain that leaving his body became a survival skill. These experiences alone catapulted Matthew into unknown territory when it comes to understanding the mind and body.In 1991, he began studying Iyengar yoga with Jo Zukovich, co-founder of the San Diego Yoga Studio. When they started, it was not clear how yoga would travel through his paralyzed body, and there were no examples to emulate. WAKING describes how teacher and student learned and adapted together.In 1998, Matthew began to share the results of their work in an adaptive class for people with disabilities. This was an awesome book. A great story for anyone really, but very helpful as well to those in the medical or alternative health care field, as I am a massage therapist. I found the linking of trauma and injury with the body very helpful in understanding clients and even my own limitations or prior injuries, it proves that your muscles do remember and even have flashbacks to trauma incurred to the body. I was totally inspired by Matthew and all he went through and accomplished during his journey back to health and Im so grateful that he shared it with us. It is also a good book for anyone experiencing aging in their bodies to read as well, lots of helpful insight for all of us as we start to disconnect from our bodies because of limitations or injury or age. Very inspiring and uplifting and hopeful.

Matt Sanford is my hero!!! He has tremendous courage and wisdom despite being dealt some really tough blows in his young life. Somehow, he has managed through a lot of hard work to use what he's learned and share it through words that speak volumes to me about what's really important in life. I am aware that there is now a 3rd edition (Programming Python) out now of this series, but I cannot in good conscience not comment about the problem with this particular edition.I own the first and second editions. I heartily recommend the 1st over the 2nd. In fact, the 2nd edition is actually missing material from the first - even though the 2nd is ALMOST TWICE THE SIZE of the first.This is the worst part.. the best reason to even own the 1st edition (the only reason basically IMHO) is a section near the back of the book. And get this.. thats the only part they took out for the second edition.Thats right, they added a bunch of useless text, and gutted the only thing that made the first edition of any value.I have both on my bookshelf, the 2nd edition is in perfect condition and collects dust. The 1st is worn from use. Take from that what you will.

I can't really complain about the book, except that newer 2.5+ libraries are not covered (e.g. the "subprocess" module"). It isn't meant to be comprehensive in the sense that you won't learn everything, but it covers enough for one to become a good python programmer.

Not only does it contain flying stories by various aviator/writers that will prove the authors' creds as pilots, they'll curl the hair on your neck like a good late-night, Stephen-King-ish mystery, while solidifying the common belief that all pilots are just big kids in charge of very costly toys that leave the ground and (most often but not always) return to the earth again in usable condition. Auxier is a left-seater, a Captain for `a major U.S. airline.' The author's other work includes two previous books: 'The Last Bush Pilots,' and 'Code Name Dodger.' This collection of tales from the cockpit includes gems with titles taken from pop culture: `Denali Mountain High'; `Zen and the Art of Aircraft Maintenance'; `The Loon is a Harsh Mistress,' you get the idea. These are satisfying, instructive, often inspiring tales, all with an undercurrent of some kind. Most of the time that subtle theme lurking below the text concerns the vagaries of the aviation game, not the dangers of it that the public focuses on but the `flyin' biz' chatter that only a pilot can relate to, but the public `inquiring minds' love to know. Indeed, one of the most telling essays in the book is titled `Top 10 downers of an airline pilot career.' As a former commercial pilot, I found myself nodding in full agreement at all ten, from the restrictions to family time, to subsistence pay, to the reality of commercial aviation's utter lack of job security. Yet, at the end of this particular piece, the childlike wonder remerges. Auxier--speaking for all pilots, at all times, everywhere--writes at the books beginning, "Ask any pilot how they started flying and you'll hear a love story" and then he returns to this sentiment after itemizing ten reasons he hates it, with this: "You're sitting in a chair...in the sky! And getting paid for it!" The writing is strong, with many of the pieces taken from capnaux.com, Auxier's flying blog, and articles of his written for NYCAviation.com and Airways Magazine. Some of the pieces in There I Wuz! lack any real flying advice and/or narrative, though the context is flying life and its blandishments. The end result is the perfect flow of excitement, learning and sharing from page to page.If you haven't read "There I Wuz!", then you're really missing out. I'm personally an aviation nerd, but even my family enjoyed reading passages and they sparked a conversation about aviation in a way nothing really has before.So cheers, Eric, for helping to expand my knowledge, save me from boredom, and allow me to share our aviation passions with family and friends more easily!

I finished this book in one sitting, minus the time I spent boarding my deadhead flight. This book will make you laugh (I did), but will also hit you in your heart (I teared up). As a fellow airline pilot I would have struggled to make one of the announcements he made and for the same reason. The book does an excellent job of portraying the nice sides as well as the "warts" of aviation, and in particular being an airline pilot. Even the bits of fiction throw you into the action and unless it was specifically stated you would never know that it is fiction. Though I have been flying for far less time than Cap'n Aux and haven't had the broad range of experiences, I can relate to the stories. And yes, if you ask a pilot, you will get a love story. Mine started when I was 9, and I remember as it was yesterday. As well as my first solo flight.
