DR. ALAN STERN is principal investigator of the New Horizons mission, leading NASA’s exploration of the Pluto system and the Kuiper Belt. A planetary scientist, space-program executive, aerospace consultant, and author, he has participated in over two dozen scientific space missions and has been involved at the highest levels in several aspects of American space exploration. Dr. Stern is the recipient of numerous awards, including the 2016 Carl Sagan Memorial Award of the American Astronautical Society, and has twice been named to the Time 100. He lives in Colorado.DR. I'm typically wary of books about specific missions like this because they have a tendency to be dry and technical. That's not the case with this book. The firsthand accounts from Alan Stern about the many difficulties in getting a Pluto mission approved and launched (they started pushing for a Pluto mission in the late 80's, fought all through the 90's, and not until the early 2000's did they finally get their shot and even then many things were working against them) are surprisingly gripping. I wouldn't have thought that reading about over a decade of administrative and political battles for getting a probe to Pluto would be too interesting, but the clear writing made it easy to follow and even had me thinking a few times "I can't believe this all ended up working out in the end, because there were so many near disasters along the way!"The interesting parts don't end after the probe finally launches, either. While I was sitting around back from 2006-2015 occasionally thinking about New Horizons coasting to Pluto and wondering if the team was getting bored during the downtime, it turns out that the team still had a ton of work to do in planning the nitty-gritty details of the flyby. And even then, they kept getting thrown curve balls! The fun of this book is really in seeing just how stacked against the New Horizons team the odds were, and how they succeeded in spite of it all. What do you do when you have a probe racing towards a planet, you've spent years programming and testing an elaborate observation plan for what the probe is going to do when it gets there, and then suddenly you discover two new moons orbiting your target planet? Are you going to hit those moons? How are you going to re-write the observation plan to get data on them? These are the things Chasing New Horizons covers, and even knowing that it all works out in the end, the authors' candid storytelling of how dicey things got at times really makes this a good read that holds your attention all the way through. This is no dry and technical spaceflight book. This is an adventure across the solar system that ran up against countless potential catastrophes and through human ingenuity managed to overcome the odds and bring us our first detailed view of Pluto and its moons.

First and foremost, you should read both books – "Discovering Pluto" by Sheehan and Cruikshank, and "Chasing New Horizons" by Stern and Grinspoon. They are both excellent and authoritative, but very different in coverage and style.Discovering Pluto (DP) is a well-researched history (400 dense pages), replete with footnotes and sources, exploring the 19th century calculations to find a Planet X, and how Tombaugh's careful search found Pluto. Full of fascinating anecdotes and asides, it then relates the early days of infrared astronomy and the discovery of ices on Pluto and its satellite Charon, an enterprise in which Cruikshank played a central part. The story moves on to the measurement of Pluto's atmosphere, and the discovery of other Kuiper belt objects, before the final 100 pages relate the New Horizons mission and its findings.Chasing New Horizons (CNH) is a faster-paced account of the origin and execution of the mission, as told by its main protagonist, Alan Stern. The book provides a fascinating insight into the long years of political maneuvering to get a Pluto mission into NASA's queue, as well as the technical challenges of building and flying a spacecraft for a few days of intense observations after almost a decade in space. While it is an engaging tale for sure, readers may become wearied by just how often they are told how many all-nighters and weekends the team worked. On the other hand, I was disappointed not to read more about Stern's unsuccessful attempt to pitch a 'New Horizons 2' to Uranus and the Kuiper belt, his tenure as a NASA Associate Administrator, the team's posture on feature-naming, and the implementation of a dress code at the Pluto Encounter.The difference in style of the two books is acutely exposed in their treatments of the IAU definition of planet; CNH is predictably acerbic (but illuminating), while DP chooses not to dwell on the matter. Both make the interesting point that the definition was made largely by astronomers and dynamicists, rather than actual planetary scientists; both also note the tautology that under the new classification 'a dwarf planet is not a planet'; both fail to note, however, that the controversy may have garnered far more public attention to Pluto than this remote iceball might otherwise have received prior to the New Horizons encounter! Pluto turned out to be far more interesting than I had expected, and both books do a good job of summarizing the key findings from New Horizons.On balance, I liked DP a little better, but both books make great reading, and I learned a lot from each.Ralph Lorenz – Author, Cassini-Huygens Owners Workshop Manual

The authors have a really unique perspective on space exploration, being involved on the ground floor right from the start. The New Horizons mission is one of the most exciting NASA missions because this part of the outer solar system has been very much unexplored until now. I found the book well written, exciting, and a real trip to read.The emphasis of the story here really is the human side: the team, the leaders, the problems, the conflicts, and the puzzling out of the crazy history of Pluto. The science is the motivation for it all, but this is not a book about the science -- it's about the people, and how they pulled off this mission.

Okay, so upfront, I would be classed as a Plutophile. I've followed the exploration of the solar system since the Pioneer I mission towards the moon in October 1958. I monitored New Horizons from its launch on January 19, 2006 to this very day. Therefore, no surprise, you can guess that this book was tailor-made for my interests (a member of the Planetary Society since 1989) and Amazon seemed to be aware of this having sent me an offer to purchase it some three months prior to publication.I thoroughly enjoyed the book and the only real disappointment was that when I reached the final page, there was nothing left to read. I especially appreciated the thorough index and the fact that it contained every acronym used in the book. If you are interested in space exploration, I highly recommend this book.

This book tells the incredible story of the New Horizons mission to Pluto. It is written in crisp easy to understand prose and it conveys the excitement and gut wrenching moments of this long journey. This book can be enjoyed by just about anyone. Highly recommended.

There are a total of 101 pages in this book, but only 21 of the pages I found to have useful content, such as puzzles, games, cultural facts about Puerto Rico, etc. 30 pages comprised of diary pages where you fill in the date, the weather, a journal entry, and draw a picture. There are another 10 pages for reflection and coloring upon arriving home. The other 60 pages are checklists or lists of some sort, a packing list, a list of people you want to send post card to, size conversions, (which don't apply to Puerto Rico), puzzles/games, and the answer keys. Just buy a blank diary and find a good travel with children website.

Excellent travel journal for kids. Has about 14 days and each day asks what the date is, weather, gives space to write about your day, asks what the funniest thing that happened, the best food of the day, and what they liked best about the day. They also leave a page to add a drawing or picture for each day. There are games for the flight and down time too.

I have lived in the Dominican Republic for 22 years. This book has some good information about the country, but it also has MANY blank "journal" pages. My suggestion as someone who lives in the DR: Look up info on the country online and review it as a family. Then, just buy your child a journal notebook. The book is overpriced for the content (lack of).

I'll be heading to Alaska in 2017 for 3 weeks. Wanted something compact to record my thoughts about my trip. This will be perfect! Also has puzzles (with the answers in the back), that will be too simple for me, but I can work them with my grandkids.The journal part of the book is laid out in a 2-page spread...on the left there is room for the date, a small space to describe the weather and several lines to fill in with "What we did today". There are 3 lines at the bottom of the page with "Cool food of the day", "What I liked best today" and "Funny thing of the day." The right page has the title "Draw something you saw today" with a large frame underneath. At the bottom of the right page it says, "My picture is of:" That last thing will be good for me since I can't draw to save my soul and most things I do draw don't look much like what they are supposed to be.There's a list of websites you can use to research more about Alaska and pages to list what you'd like to see or places you'd like to visit. There are also 2 pages devoted to listing the names and addresses of people you'd like to send post cards too.The small size (7.5" wide x 9.25" tall and about 1/4" thick) will make it easy to slip into my backpack.

These were a gift for visiting children. They loved the journals! Both children explored with excitement to find the perfect subject for the day's journal entries.

This book came really well timed, as a bunch of my friends have just "taken the Paleo plunge." I'm not personally paleo, so I wasn't sure if I would get anything out of it. But I have a small kitchen an hate cleanup, so I am always happy to try out a book that promises easy cooking! I was really pleasantly surprised by the results I've had so far. The book doesn't preach too much about the paleo benefits, but does give you information if that's something you need. This book is amazing. I've never loved my cast iron + eating paleo more and it's all thanks to this book. This book honestly makes cooking for a paleo diet 1000 times more easier. One-pan recipes are the key to keeping and maintaing a healthy lifestyle. These quick meals makes it 100000 times easier to eat what I need to do without getting caught up in the complexity of meals Luckily for me my boyfriend picked out my cast iron so I didn't need to find one on my own, but if I did, no fear, this book even helps talk you through the steps of the right cast iron. I never would have thought about a scallion cauliflower pancake - this book brought up the recipe and man oh man, it's delicious. Not quite the same as the pancakes I used to have but honestly, pretty down good and a great alternative. The only thing I really missed from this book was beautiful imagery but honestly it's okay because the book itself has amazing recipes with easy to follow instructions. Great book and highly recommend for anyone - whether or not they keep paleo these easy and delicious results and meals that come from this recipe belong in everyones mouths!

This is a great cookbook. I already use cast iron pans for cooking because I am boarderline anemic. The doctors advised me to use cast iron to add iron to my diet. These recipes do follow the Paleo diet. Even if not on the Paleo Diet, dishes could be added to any meal. These recipes are easy to follow, do not take much prep work, and have ingredients that I already have in my pantry. Ingredients are readily available in stores. Recipes are for breakfast, vegetables, vegetarian, fish and seafood, poultry, pork, beef and lamb, and best of all desserts. I also like that is a chapter on cast iron cooking. It guides you through benefits, seasoning, and caring for your pans. If the author ever does another edition of this book, I wish pictures would be included. The recipes sound delicious. Wish I could also see how they should look.

Author Pamela Ellgen wasted no time bringing the recipes in this book, giving the reader over 100 to choose from. The first couple of pages are dedicated to cast iron maintenence and what is considered paleo, but the rest of the book is ALL recipes. Whatever you’re craving, there is a recipe that fits your desire. Broccoli Mushroom Casserole, Sizzling Portobello Fajitas, Pan Seared Salmon, Duck Confit, Swedish Meatballs, breakfast items, desserts, you name it. Most of the prep times listed are 5 to 10 minutes, with 10 minutes to 3 hours of cook time based on the dish. The good thing is that clean up is relatively simple with everything being prepared in the cast iron skillet. Whether you're paleo or not, I have no doubt in my mind that most people would be satisfied with the recipes provided.

The recipes are concise and very tasty. Only reason it's not a 5 star is that the book has zero pictures. We didn't realize this when we bought it so we were disappointed. We cook in cast iron most nights during the week and these recipes are quickly becoming a staple in our rotation.

I've listen to Steve Green for over 25 years now and I love his music because it is so good and the words always reflect Christ and His message from the Bible. Steve in every area of his life and especially in his music is the instrument that God uses and takes himself out of the picture and lets the talents God gave him be used for God's glory and praise. Steve Green's music encourages, strengthens, teaches, inspires and leads you to the foot of Christ regardless if you are going through a hard time or a good time in your life. I love these songs on this CD and his new stuff Somewhere Between and Songs of Worship are just incredibly awesome!The CD is awesome and this book is a great way to bring to life some songs I believe will end up in the hymn book of our churches to your church choir and special music programs. Songs like Find Us Faithful, People Need The Lord, God and God Alone, The Mission, Household of Faith, and on and on I could go, strong, deeply rooted songs that can bring greater depth to your worship services.

I was given this as a gift today. I had been looking forward to it for quite some time. I love to have music books on my kindle because it makes turning easy. I opened this book on my kindle and was saddened to see that in many places the bottom one or two lines of the treble clef were missing. That makes the music hard to play as you think the note you are seeing is a E when it is actually a G. If that could be fix, this would be a 5 star review.The song selection is wonderful. It has all my favorites: Household of Faith, Find us Faithful, and so many more. And it is in the key that Steve sings it so you can listen and play at the same time.

The Symposium is what it is: a classic of western culture. So, when one offers a review, it's not about the text itself (I think) but for the translation, presentation and notes. So: Wakefield's translation is the smoothest I've read of this great text. His modern English makes the homoerotic context of the dialogue clear, for one thing. I've taught this text to sleepy undergrads who were clueless about the terms "lover" and "beloved" in the speeches, assuming they were about a boy and a girl. But the notes are where Wakefield really shines. Wakefield gives not only a readable account of each of the speeches, a special discussion of love in Greek thought, and a literary analysis, but also a useful set of notes at the end. Over all, this is so much better than the tired British translations we used to read in college back in the old days.

In this review I will compare 5 translations of Plato's Symposium:1. Alexander Nehamas & Paul Woodruff (Hackett Pub Co, 1989).2. Benardete (University of Chicago Press, 2001).3. R.E. Allen (Yale University Press, 1993).4. Shelley's Translation (St Augustine Press, 2002)5. Sharon (Focus Publishing/R.Pullins Co, 1997)I have given all translations 5 stars for their own unique perspectives. Each of these editions has its own strengths and weaknesses, and because of this, none of this edition is complete in itself. Inevitably, if you are serious in undertaking this work, you need to pick up more than one edition. I will give a recommendation on which one to use, at the end of this review.Symposium consists of a series of speeches on love (Eros), culminating in Socrates' and then Alcibiades'. What I am looking for is, first, ease of understanding the central concept of the book, this is obtained through different types of translations. My bias is toward a translation that is fluid, natural, and conveys the concept in a straight forward way. Second, I am also looking for helpful insights and philosophical explanations of some key thoughts. You get this from the quality of commentary/notes as part of the book.Both Sharon's and Nehamas' editions are similar in their lucid, straightforward, and current translations. I find that these 2 editions to be the best and easiest in understanding the text. On the translation side, I give these 5 stars. However, the commentaries in both editions are basic, and unsatisfying in my mind. For this, I give 4 stars.Benardete's edition has a superb commentaries both written by him and another (which is the gem here) written by Allan Bloom. You may or may not like Bloom's style, but he does give you a lot of background especially in ancient Greek pederasty culture, and valuable insights in each of the speeches. I give this a 5 star. I will recommend buying this book just for those 2 commentaries. On the translation itself, however, I am not a fan of Benardete's style. I have commented this in other reviews for his other translations, especially the "Sophist". For some reason, I find it more complex, long winded, and harder to understand. For this I give this edition translation 4 stars only.Allen's edition is superb for both translation and commentaries; this is a 5 star book for me.Finally, on Shelley's translation: this is a unique edition for a couple of reasons. It is a translation of a masterpiece work, by a master in literature himself, Percy Shelley. So, you are reading not only Plato's works, but also a work by one of the most influential literary figure in the English world. Secondly, there is an extensive commentary by David O'Connor, not only on the Symposium, but also on Shelley's process and motivation of doing the translation. A superb edition.My final recommendation: pick up either Sharon or Nehamas' book (personally I prefer Sharon's, it is beautifully done) for the translation, and then pick up Stanley Rosen's "Plato's Symposium" for the commentary (I have a separate review for this superb book). However, if you must read 1 and only 1 book, I would stay with Allen's.

Hackett Publishing puts out the preeminent translations/versions of the classics. The introductions, footnotes and line references allow for thorough reading/engrossment of the texts. I have a large collection of Hackett books and I was not disappointed by this one. Whether you are taking a class or reading on your own turn to these texts over other versions. You will NOT be disappointed. I recommend this book (version) without reservation.

The one start is for this particular edition not for the book itself. The edition does not have numbered paragraphs. I need this book for a class, and we need paragraph numbers to properly cite the text in essays. It was a complete waste of time for me to read this edition and make notes in it, and then have to look at another edition to get the paragraph numbers for citation purposes. When my professor referred to certain passages of the text in class, I could not follow along. My professor says that this usually happens when students get their books from Amazon instead of the editions she picked out that are on shelf of the campus bookstore! Regrettable mistake on my part.

With this I read the Hackett edition and I was pleased with it. Unlike many of their other Plato editions, this one had a decent amount of footnotes and a great introduction, with an easy to read translation.I knew beforehand that this book contained dialogues about Euros, but I didn't realize that with many of the dialogues the love is referring to pederasty, I should have guessed from some of the interactions with other Plato dialogues. To someone like myself from a different time and culture this was slightly disturbing at first, but once I got past my own opinions, this was actually a great dialogue. I did wonder how this dialogue was so well copied throughout the Catholic middle ages, one would think that it would get swept under the rug like so many other documents, but perhaps because its Socrates or just because its good, it got a pass. I think its among the best of the Plato dialogues I've read, it seems more lively and entertaining than some of the others.In this, men at a symposium sit around making speeches in praise of love. I don't remember the first ones very well, but the later ones were pretty good. I liked the popular one by Aristophanes where he tells of a love creation type of myth were people at one time had double the body parts but were separated into two by a god, then they search for their other half. I think my favorite part though happened at the end where Alcibiades comes in drunk and tells stories about Socrates, it gives another dimension to the man and made me appreciate him more (his apology was even more effective when I read it after this).

This course covers a basic overview of Greek Mythology and is taught by Elizabeth Vandiver.I liked that this course covered the gods and some of the demigods as well. I also liked that she discussed the what vs why of myth. I find Professor Vandiver to be an enthusiastic teacher and very easy to listen to. Thirty minutes per lecture was just the right amount of time. I have since listened to other great courses by her and found her summaries of those topics to be as interesting as this one.

Dr. Vandiver does a good job explaining classical mythology. This is a "deep" lecture, at least in my opinion. She doesn't spend quite as much time as I would have liked discussing individual myth. Instead she delves into the meanings behind the myths. An understanding of Greek/Roman culture is required to understand these meanings and I believe Dr. Vandiver provides the background that is needed. She can be a little dry at times, but, having spent a lot of time in college classrooms, I had no problem with her delivery. Interesting and informative. Plan on buying some of her other lectures.

Good overview of Classical Mythology. I'm enjoying re-listening to the tapes. I would recommend this as an introduction for someone who would like to begin to have a better understanding of mythology.

Very informative and easy to follow. More than I had expected for the money. The lectures not only covered the well know myths but explained how they may have become myths.

Very engaging lectures, and an excellent introduction to her other courses (Iliad, Odyssey, and Aeneid), and Greek study in general. Furthermore, this series is rich in its references to the works and theories of other scholars, which is helpful if you are interested enough to do further research. One caveat, however, is that this series dissects, rather than narrates Greek myth, and is rather heavy on, in Prof. Vandiver's own terms, the structural and psychological side. It is more interested in what modern readers can learn and understand of ancient Greece THROUGH Greek myth, which is, by her own admission, a little shaky. If you listen to other lectures given by historians or archaeologists who use different evidence and materials, it's not surprising that they may understand an institution, or interpret a phenomenon, in vastly different ways.
