In this book, author Paul Kengor draws parallels between Pope John Paul II and Ronald Reagan. Not only in their great desire to rid the world of the threat of communism but also in events that happened during their lives. The focus is mainly on the history of these two individuals and their combined efforts against what they saw as the greatest threat to liberty and faith but there is considerable thought and room given to the historical stance of the leadership of the Catholic Church. As I am a Christian but not a Catholic, much of this information was new (and informative) to me.The events the two leaders shared start with their childhood influence of a deeply religious parent (father with the Pope and mother with President Reagan) to their first careers as actors to the loss of their fathers mere weeks apart in 1941 and then to their attempted assassinations (again weeks apart) in 1981. The two men, once they met in 1982, developed a good relationship in their efforts and became close friends with what President Reagan called a shared “Divine Plan”.The book also chronicles some of the history of the Catholic Church's stand against Communism when the rest of the world seemed to see it as less of a threat. It also touches on the history of Nazi Germany and other totalitarian movements but the main focus of the book is the relationship and the actions that two of the foremost Christian leaders of their time took to bring down what President Reagan dubbed “the evil empire”.While I generally read historical accounts of much older events than these (some of which happened during my lifetime), I found the book both interesting and thought provoking.

In 1989, Ronald Reagan pointed to a framed photo of Pope John Paul II in his California home and explained the Polish pontiff was "My Best Friend." Like Franklin Roosevelt and Winston Churchill, their friendship was forged by historic events and their place in history and together, they changed the world. More dramatically, Reagan and JPII were shot six weeks apart, miraculously survived and were convinced God has saved them for a special purpose (to relegate the Evil Empire to the Ash Heap of History). This amazing and detailed book, building on earlier masterpieces like "The Second Greatest Story Ever Told" by Michael Gaitley and Newt Gingrich's "Nine Days That Changed the World," authoritatively documents the story of atheistic authoritarianism vs. faith and freedom, Fatima, the 20th century and Reagan and the Pope, showing how the lives of the Polish Catholic and the American Protestant paralleled each other, how they overlapped and intersected. Read this book. You won't regret it.

Before I read this monumental book, the best book I had read on Ronald Reagan and Reagan and winning the Cold War was The Crusader, Ronald Reagan and the Fall of Communism, also by Paul Kengor. It greatly covered in specific detail the precise steps and the risks Reagan took to bring down the "evil empire" and the Berlin Wall. It included Reagan's defense build-up, including missile defense, and his efforts to bankrupt the Soviet Union, all playing a pivotal in Reagan bringing down communism. It's been a while since I have read the book, but, as I remember there was much about Saint John Paul II's major role as well, especially of course in Poland, that proved the be the linchpin in the eventual fall of communism in eastern Europe and Soviet Union. And it was in that book that I first heard that President Reagan considered Pope John Paul II his best friend.I have read a number of books on Ronald Reagan and his role in ending the Cold War, so I thought I was well informed on the subject. I had never heard though what was revealed in this great book. A Pope and a President, John Paul II, Ronald Reagan, and the Extraordinary Untold Story of the 20th Century. I knew of course that Pope John Paul was shot of the Feast of Fatima, May 13, but had no idea how much Reagan was interested in Fatima and its messages and the role it, and the Blessed Mother Mary overall, had in the Pope and the President's ongoing efforts to end communism. I also didn't realize or had forgotten how much President Reagan literally preached a faith in God in his numerous historical speeches in the Soviet Union and elsewhere in the communist world. And the confluence of dates is amazing as well. The Russian Revolution was in 1917, the same year as the Blessed Virgin appeared to the 3 peasant children at Fatima. And I had never realized that Archbishop Fulton Sheen played a role in influencing the Protestant Reagan and bringing down communism. He had given many talks on the evils of communism and how it is a Godless evil. Both Sheen and Reagan are products of the Illinois prairie. I knew that communism is of course and atheistic evil that killed over 100 million in the last century, but did not focus so much on it being a problem of spiritual desolation. Reagan and Pope John Paul II knew though that it was largely a problem of being a Godless system with a spiritual vacuum. Yes, there were specific tactics that Reagan initiated to bring down communism, but his emphasis on the spiritual aspect was what finally did it, even likely playing a role in influencing Mikhail Gorbachev to resign as head of the Soviet Union and thus make way for its demise.Reagan was a life long Protestant, though he had much Catholic influence throughout his life, starting with his Catholic father, his great friend and confidant, Judge William Clark, who served Reagan so well in many posts and played a major role in Reagan's efforts to bring down communism, a long time goal of his too.(Paul Kengor's book on Judge Clark is great as well and highly recommended.) And of course, his "best friend," Pope John Paul II. Reagan also had a great affection for the mostly Catholic Polish citizenry, and so wanted them to be out from under the shackles of communism.I'm a slow reader and rarely read books twice. Even though it is over 500 pages, I plan to make this great book an exception and read it at least one more time. There are so many great lessons, including spiritual lessons, from the examples of two of the greatest men of the millennium, Saint John Paul II and President Ronald Reagan. This book gives one hope in mankind that the world could produce two such great and good men. I cannot recommend this great book highly enough.

Dr Kengor weaves, or more appropriately interweaves, the lives of two contemporaries into a tale of how communism was brought down. Finding both contrasts and parallels in the lives of Saint John Paul II and President Ronald Reagan, the author shows how their interaction and alignment of temporal and divine forces broke the back of the Soviet Union. Intertwining so many of the major figures of the 20th century (Fulton Sheen, FDR, JFK, Mother Teresa, Gorbachev,....), he showed how interactions led to building a common plan, all against the backdrop of the Marian apparitions at Fatima.So much of what's discussed went unreported or the full significance can only be seen in hindsight. It's a great recap of the Cold War through the impact of two men working together for a common purpose.

The two publications should be used together as they complement and in some measure depend on each other. Most entries have references, but archaeologists chronicled in The Great Archaeologists do not; readers are instead directed to consult that work. In addition, both publications have glossaries, which overlap and share definitions. This next installment of the Encyclopedia of Archaeology takes a more standard topical approach, with entries covering the history of archaeology in specific countries or regions as well as "the histories of significant sites, debates, techniques, methods and issues that are central to the global practice of the discipline." Examples include Abydos, Babylonian civilization, Dating, Chaco Canyon, Industrial archaeology, Iran, Sweden, and Terracotta warriors. There are also entries for individuals (Thomas Jefferson) who did not appear in the earlier volumes and a few (Howard Carter) who did.The signed entries are arranged alphabetically and vary in length from a paragraph to more than 30 pages for Island Southeast Asia. Most are accompanied by cross-references and bibliographies, which in some cases are quite extensive. A comprehensive table of contents is repeated in all three volumes, and volume 3 also offers a glossary and a well-done index. It is unfortunate that there is no indexing that refers the reader to The Great Archaeologists, although there are references to those volumes in some of the bibliographies. The lack of guide words makes it difficult to navigate through the pages, especially because some of the entries are so long.The national and regional surveys are the most valuable aspect of this resource. Titles such as Encyclopedia of the Archaeology of Ancient Egypt (Routledge, 1999) and Archaeology of Ancient Mexico and Central America [RBB Mr 1 01] offer more depth, but entries here on Egypt, Mexico, and Maya civilization, to name a few, provide useful synthesis for the general reader. I had already seen the first associated encyclopedic set, The Great Archaeologists. This particular three volume addition is just as impressive. I would like to compliment Tim Murray for the overall quality for all of the main encyclopedic entries, not an easy task when there are so many contributors. This would be a fine reference source for anyone who wants a definitive, world wide glimpse of the varied field and history of archaeology. A cumulative table of contents in the front of each volume provides us with the complete listing of the main alphabetical entries. Signed entries (the list of contributors forming part of the appendices in the last volume) include appropriate see also references and bibliographic references for further research. A well done powerful reference tool is the index, one of the best that I have seen. Page numbers in bold face type show that the subject has its place in the main encyclopedic presentation. The editor took special care to indicate if the subject reference is a photograph or illustration. Consider this as an essential, first stop reference tool to ground you in a wide variety of related world-wide archaeological subjects.

Gosh, I don't even know where to start. I loved the first book in this series and recommended it to my friends. The second book was funny, but the idea lost its originality (obviously sequels usually stink). The third and fourth book started going downhill from story line to character (lack) development and the constant cussing and immature behavior of the "Queen".Now this 5th book seriously TANKS. I have no idea why Davidson insists on making the lead character whiney, annoying, unreasonable, selfish, rude, disrespectful and haughty. It is just horrid and more frightening than the thought of vampires living among us. The relationships aren't quite developed and there are a lot of characters that are still stuck in limbo with nothing new to revive them since their introduction in the first or second book.I also dislike the way the lead character (Elizabeth/Betsy/Queen) treats everyone around her. She is ruthlessly selfish and has an "I don't care" attitude throughout the books. No one really stands up to her and she continues to blindly stumble through situations without EVER learning her lesson. I know Davidson is trying to make "Elizabeth/Betsy" be a fun loving character, but she misses the point of compassion and politeness.I am also really sick of all the cussing and rude remarks and the constant use of "uncool" words like: "pal", "oh boy", and "cutie". What? I thought she was supposed to be a cool 30 something vampire not some house mom from Fresno. Either way, the dialogue is hard to work through and Betsy seems to think the weight of the world is on her selfish shoulders and gives the reader dose after miserable dose of negative dialogue. She never gives her friends and lover a benefit of a doubt and then ends up in stupid situations that really aren't THAT entertaining - even though they're meant to be.Sadly, this is the last book I'm waisting time on. I cannot torture myself any longer. I want to be a fan, but I just can't wrap around a negative, cussing, sassy brat character. Just can't do it.

MaryJanice Davidson has a uniquely humorous voice, which makes her the only romance author out there from whom I will eagerly purchase a book. The "Queen Betsy" series is one of my favorites in one of my favorite genres - the "silly vampire" books.In this, the 5th outing for the unlikely vampire queen, Betsy (from Minneapolis), we find Betsy a few days from her 31st birthday, which will also be one year from the day she was killed by being hit by an Aztek (what a plebian way to go!) and awoke as a vampire - horrified to find that The Ant (as she calls her stepmother) had dressed her for her funeral in absolutely dreadful shoes.Betsy is planning for her non-existent Surprise Birthday Party (which she doesn't want), as well as the wedding to her Vampire King Eric Sinclair, which is scheduled for three months away. Additionally, some hot-shot vampire big-wigs from Europe are showing up. To complicate matters, Sophie (a vampire friend of Betsy's) wishes to "turn" her boyfriend Liam, which leaves Betsy rather discombobulated. Until Betsy learns her best friend, Jessica, has myeloma, whereupon she finds herself pondering the same course of action for her friend. That is, of course, if she changes her mind about never drinking blood again. Then, when Sophie and Liam run up against the big shot European vampires - that's when things really hit the fan, because one of the European contingent is the vampire who killed Sophie and turned her into a vampire and she is out for blood. What's a benevolent vampire queen to do?Written with an always wry and witty outlook on life, the Betsy books are truly a terrific way to relax and enjoy a nice evening with a cup of tea. Do yourself a favor, pick up a couple and have a few laughs with Betsy!

I was disappointed by this entry in Mary Janice Davidson's Undead series. Undead and Unpopular lacks any real tension. It suffers from too much exposition and dialog. They are talking in the kitchen. They are talking in the parlor. They are talking in the bedroom. There really didn't seem to be much actual action at all. The menace implied by the European vampires never really seemed all that menacing. When I got to the end of the book I had to go back and check. I couldn't find a real climax to any of the action. I think that's the point. The action in this book was sorely missing. Betsy's self-centered whining is starting to get old, and there seemed to be a chapter I missed somewhere along the line. Probably some short story in an anthology. I dislike when authors assume you'll read every anthology they contribute to.

I do not understand the title . Nevertheless, It was an enjoyable read. The character development is spot on and this series continues to be unpredictable . Now I am looking forward to the next installment .

This is a fantastic little vampire tale based in the Twin Cities area. I love reading the series and have now bought them here to read again and again. Expect elicit sexual discussion and vampire blood sucking yarns, but it is hilarious, fun and just a great read!

Even though I am a guy, I really enjoy MaryJanice Davidson' books. Her characters have attitude, her story lines are filled with humor AND they keep you guessing as to "What will happen next".I can't say enough GOOD about these books, (and their author). I've purchased and read all the Mermaid and Undead series. In fact, on multiple times I've sat up all night just to finish a book.HIGHLY RECOMMEND

Nothing new here

The book was too basic. You will find nothing in depth. It was like a government pamphlet for early teens or seniors in their dotage. It was highly repetitious and a number of pages contained only one or two sentences as if in an effort to fill the book. Very little useful information was available on Autoimmune Hepatitis, three triple spaced pages, which was why I bought the book.

I have mixed feelings about this two-book series.Pros: nice big books (8 1/2” x 11”); helpful descriptions of topography and geography; listings of sites and restaurants to visit on your own.Cons: spellcheck errors (no proofreader?); content is repeated in the first 24 pp of each book; pictures are all black & white; maps are barely decipherable.Despite the author’s claim, “I have included all of the ports of call visited by both the major cruise lines and the upmarket and adventure cruise companies,” three of the eight ports we will visit with Holland America in 2019 are not included (Eidfjord, Molde, and Skjolden).All of the text is in a bold font, which is distracting. I question why the author decided to issue this self-published content in two volumes. If the duplicate content was eliminated, the font was not in a bold face, and a few black & white snapshots were deleted (there are pages and pages of them), this would be an impressive single-volume compendium. But stretching the content into two volumes seems a bit like a money grab.

I feel this is the one of the essential books for LTPS

Excellent points. Esp good time management section as far as "how to", little less helpful on prioritizing what is important and what isn't.

Great book. With a lot of useful ministry advice

Short. Useful, but not comprehensive.

These duties fall on the sholders of the small church pastor.

This was required for a class and was exactly what I needed!
