Review
[Review of hardcover edition:] Toronto-based graphic designer Wilcox presents another volume reflecting his interest in architecture, history, and photography. Here he explores entries and exits from before history to about yesterday, covering all countries, styles, and materials. In generally chronological order, he arranges exquisite color photographs of prehistoric stone structures, ancient and medieval buildings that are or are not still in use, illuminated church and cathedral doors, mosques, wood doors in frontiers around the world, colorful apartment and other city doors, secluded estates, and modern dwellings and buildings. Credits are in the end matter; there are no captions. (BookNews)[Review of hardcover edition:] A gorgeous glossy hardback profiling--you guessed it--doors. Toronto-based graphic designer Bob Wilcox selected 500 photographs of doors from around the world for this 272-page dazzler, starting with ancient doorways to the most modern architectural entryways. (Medicine Hat News 2009-12-01)[Review of hardcover edition:] Other than the foreword by architect Jerome Markson and an introductory essay by the author, the beautifully printed Doors contains virtually no text or captions, and given the ravishingly visual subject matter, none are needed. Author Bob Wilcox conducted extensive photo research to capture images of more than 500 doors from all over the world, assembling them into a collection that celebrates the vast variety of detail, craftsmanship, history and personality that doors present... The sheer breadth of variety makes it the best kind of coffee table book, irresistible to leaf through and pore over at length.... Words are unnecessary--Doors is a delightful addition to the library of lovers of architecture and design (and world travel), and a book that will captivate for years. (Marta Uniacke Breen National Post 2010-07-16)[Review of hardcover edition:] They guard our homes, open the way for our guests to enter and they make a statement about what might lie beyond them. Doors can appear in many different shapes, sizes and colours. More than 500 photographs from around the world fill the pages with an incredible range of styles. They represent many different cultures and eras. The collection gathered here goes from the earliest stone archways of Renaissance artists and on to the most modern interpretations. The photographs are all beautifully reproduced in colour and are presented without distraction. At the end of the book the location of each door is provided. The variety shown here may well spark a desire to change your own door and make a bolder statement about who lives there. (Terry Peters North Shore News 2009-11-25)

This is a book chock-full of excellent photographs of doorways, a large number of which contain no doors. If one is expecting to see doors only, one might be disappointed. Even at that, it is not altogether doorways, but aperatures of various sorts related to entry into structures of varying types. The scope of the book is international and spans from the remote past to the present. The doorways are not organized in any particular geographic order, but there is a general chronological order. There are no captions, but a list of photographic credits at the end of the book does provide basic information. It is a nuisance to constantly flip between the index and the photographs, but it is doubtful that Mr. Wilcox expected that to happen; rather, it seems that he intended the photographs to be enjoyed for their own value.
This is more a coffee-table book than a woodworking book, which is what I was looking for. As a coffee-table book, it is fantastic, with more doors from more cultures than you would imagine. However, there is no explanation of how the doors are constructed, nor of how they are hinged, which is more of what I was seeking.
Another great Coffee Table book! Having a 'Door' fascination myself, my having gotten this book was an absolute delight! Only wish that I didn't have to flip back & forth to see where the photograph was taken. Thank you– Bob Wilcox for sharing!
My son's girlfriend and I share a love of unique and ornate doors so I bought her this book for Christmas and she LOVED it. Next I'll get her a window book. She loves those too. A great book for a great girl!
Great pictures and very diverse for those using it as a reference, I'd recommend it over 'doors of the world' by Jean Phillipe Lenclos as the pictures are better quality and it focuses on a wider range of doors, doorways and entranceways (incidentally this is probably what it should have been called). I was looking for pictures from a wide range of doors, showing different styles, types and textures and it delivers adequately. There is no text or drawings but each picture is labelled in a directory at the back.for those who wonder about such things the book measures 235x290mm
very good reference for door design in different style.
If you love viewing doors from all over the world, its amazing. Great coffee table book too!
Excellent historical review.
