I haven't read a self-help book in years, but after hearing Ru's interview on Fresh Air I knew I had to read this book. I'm not a particular fan of drag and had only seen RuPaul occasionally in a movie. I suppose much of the wisdom in this book is recycled from other sources, but seeing them through the eyes of Ru and the medium of drag puts a whole new spin on things. And there are some real gems in here that I have bookmarked to return to as I deal with my own self-imposed obstructions. For whatever reason seeing The Human Condition through the lens of drag makes surprising sense and sings to me. Thank you, Ru. I'm off now to meditate and then dance.

I love Mother Ru. It's a quick read. Almost a coffee table book. Not a self help or even a motivational book. There are some sprinkles of her past mostly in the very beginning and the very end. The meat of the book is to die for pictures and poses and one sentence motivational one-liners.I connected with the very last pages of the book and for me I wish thats where it began.Still 10s 10s 10s across the board for photography

I agree with a previous reviewer. It’s more of a coffee table book with RuPaul quotes expect smaller in size. Even Kim Kardashian’s selfie book was thicker. Had the book been larger I would’ve rated it higher. The photos inside of RuPaul are gorgeous.

This book is perfect for sensitive creatives with ADD. I'm team Ru through and thru and know that reviews reflect parts of ourselves. Ego's hate simplicity and often miss the depth of the conversation. I appreciate the subtleties, the Universal truths, the things that if we really 'knew", we wouldn't have to be reminded. Almost every photo is a work of art. Guru will always be worth reading and re-reading.

I learned about resetting my soul to make my own self happy and show love and kindness because it makes me shine, even if I don’t get it shone back to me. RuPaul is entertaining and inspirational for the world.

This book will motivate you to your best life. If you are already a RuPaul fan then this will be a must have coffee table book.

I have been a huge supporter and admirer of RuPaul , so when heard his interview in NPR about his new upcoming book I had to invest. Love each page I've been reading. Malan is the scion of a Afrikaner family, pioneers among the Dutch colonists who established an outpost at the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa, where they fought the Zulu and Xhosa armies in order to survive and then to conquer that bloody frontier. The Afrikaners then became the victims of imperial onslaught themselves, fighting a series of wars against the British Empire, drawn to South Africa by gold and other wellsprings of wealth. His ancestors became men of wealth and substance, and central to the Afrikaners' sense of themselves as ordained by God to rule that place, and to do so in the name of a Christian mission to the Dark Continent, but a deeply conservative mission preserved, expanded and enriched by any means necessary, and devoted to the oppression of black Africans, whom the Afrikaner told themselves, not without some truth, would rise up and kill them in their beds if allowed to gain power. "They spoke of themselves as bearers of the light," Rian Malan writes, "but in truth they were dark of heart, and knew it, and willed it so."Of course, the violence of the Afrikaners' predicaments was rooted in their own role as conquerors. In some ways, their view corresponded to Thomas Jefferson's assessment of slavery for the fledgling United States: "We have the wolf by the ears, and can neither safely hold him nor let him go. Justice is in one scale and self-preservation in the other." Upon such rationales are white supremacist empires constructed. Eventually, the Malan clan becomes pivotal in the creation of modern South African apartheid in 1948, which rested upon historic foundations of white domination, both by the Dutch settlers, who became, in some sense, a white African tribe--the Boers--and by the British, whom they battled as though they were a native people resisting the imperial juggernaut, successfully, in the end, even as they oppressed the black African native peoples. It is a hard story, and into these dilemmas Rian Malan was born in the suburbs of Johannesburg, and into an only somewhat liberal white South African family. But his life was not separable from the deep injustices in which be was born embedded. "I was a white man born in Africa, and all flowed from there," Malan writes.This candor is typical of this powerful memoir. As a teenager, Malan becomes a socialist opponent of apartheid, a hippie, really, and has romantic images of himself as the Just White Man, nobly working to set things aright. But he is too honest to stay in that self-congratulatory pose, and never does his narrative lapse into the politics of self-exoneration. After starting his literary career with an underground newspaper attacking apartheid with no result other than to make its staff and readers feel wonderfully clean of their own unexamined white supremacy, he becomes the crime reporter for the largest South African daily newspaper. He takes to exile in the United States for a time, running from the troubles of his homeland and from the complexities of his position of privilege, his reluctant but finally inexorable commitment to a politics of liberation for black South Africans, and the painful predicaments of his "traitor's heart."The results are a profound, eloquent, utterly candid memoir, beautifully rendered, refreshingly unpersuaded of its own purity, wearily if indefatigably devoted to democracy for all South Africans, but keenly aware of the impossible nature of this historic task and his irrelevance, for the most part, to the outcome. It will make you wince, but this is a very truthful book, and if it is a call to arms for we who believe in freedom, we who oppose white supremacy in all its manifestations--in our economies, in our social structures, in our cultures, and in our hearts--it is not a naive call to arms.I have read it twice before, once twenty years ago when it helped me attain a more honest view of myself as a white man and a recovering white supremacist like all of my compatriots, whatever their color; again when I was trying to be a good soldier in the struggle and encouraged by Malan's candor and commitment, and now I am halfway through it again and relishing his fine writing and deep historical and personal insights. I don't know how well, in the end, it holds up, but I am deeply impressed regardless. This is a book well worth reading, and it helps me not to be disillusioned by the failures of progress and democracy in South Africa and in the United States. These conundrums have been with us from the start, and understanding them better is one step in the long-haul struggle toward something better.

This is an amazing book. Painfully honest and heart-wrenching in places, but gives a unique perspective on life in South Africa during apartheid. Malan is a descendant of some of the initial creators of separation between white and black in Africa, a successful journalist, and a man tortured by the idea that he is a product of the environment that created apartheid and that, in the end, there isn't a whole lot he can do to reverse it. It is certainly one of the more readable and compelling non-fiction books that I've read. It has changed by understanding of racism - even if I already knew that we are all in some way racist, that concept gained depth and perspective through this book more than any other that I've read. I thoroughly recommend it for anyone with the courage to face up to what people do to people just because of racial, cultural or other differences.

The "troubling" aspects of Rian Malan's biography are easily described: everything in his life and in the history of his South Africa, the centuries of ever-hardening racism and violence of his "tribe" -- he is a Boer, the scion of a prominent family, whose ancestors played horrific roles in the formulation of apartheid, of absolute racial separation -- but also in the 'social anthropology' of the Zulu and other dark-skinned tribes that the colonizing whites so brutalized. In fact, the most horrifying incidences of violence Malan recounts are incidents of black violence against whites (understandable to liberals in other lands!) and, worse, of black violence against other blacks, based on ancient tribal feuds and on rival politics of resistance to white rule. Part historical study, part personal apologia, part investigative journalism, "My Traitor's Heart" is the sort of narrative that circles around itself, prefigures its own direction but then moves elsewhere, and never becomes entirely committed to a thesis; that's not a flaw, in my mind, since Malan circles around himself in equal uncertainty of his own role and his own worth. As his title suggests, this is the confession of a troubled man, whose primary trouble is that he can't find an answer to his most important question: "how to live in his own country?"The easiest summary of Malan's analysis of the racial catastrophe called South Africa, the summary that seems so terribly, terrifyingly inevitable, is straight out of Kipling: "Black is black and white is white, and never the twain shall meet!" But for Malan, the scion of apostles of apartheid, that summary is unconscionable. Loathsome. Hopeless. An answer that solves nothing. This IS a book that ends itself in a welter of despair, though there's the unconvincing rhetorical 'promise' of long-term good intentions.The "troublesome" aspects of this book are more subjective and harder to express. I don't admire the author. I don't entirely trust the author's investigations of his own conscience. Malan repeatedly expresses his own self-doubt, his own shame-faced realizations of his superficiality and posturing as a liberal leftist. Well and good, but I still don't feel comfortable with him. He wants too much that we should praise his candor and esteem his penitential embarrassment over his life choices. But who am I then, to treat him so skeptically? I've never visited South Africa. I've scarcely studied its history or anthropology. I've read a few novels, seen a few films, seen the plays of Athol Fugard performed for predominantly white audiences. How can I confirm anything Malan writes? How can I feel confident that he is depicting the society in any sort of entirety? Or is he ignoring vast significant aspects of that society, out of his own stubborn personalism? My confidence in him was sorely shaken, after I finished the book, by my discovery of his role in "denying" the severity of the AIDS epidemic in South Africa. He has since attempted to explain his position by maintaining that the international health/welfare agencies have "exaggerated" the extent of the epidemic in order to boost their fund-raising, in other words, for selfish institutional aggrandizement. That's the sort of accusatory sour-grapes that I hear altogether too often about every agency -- environmental, scientific, humanitarian -- and that serves nobody's well-being.So who is the real Malan? Despite the insistent tenor of self-revelation in this book, I can't help feeling that the author is still a poseur, a man masking himself in humility, annoyingly proud of being humble.

I enjoyed reading "A Year in Provence" years ago when it was first published, and since it was on the recommended reading list for our upcoming 3 week tour of France, I decided to re-read it. We will be spending some time in Provence, though not mingling with the locals to the extent that Mayle did when he and his wife moved from England and bought an old farm house to remodel and live year around. Mayle's adventures in hiring contractors and getting any work done on a reliable timetable are told humorously, thought with no disrespect to the French workers. They learn that in France, time is marked by seasons rather than days. They finally devise an ingenious method to get all the contractors to come back and complete the various unfinished projects around the house before Christmas - they send out invitations to a champagne reception to which the spouses are also invited. They know that none of the contractors will want their partners to be embarrassed by incomplete work !Mayle also writes of their journeys to visit fabulous restaurants and the French love of food and wine. He cultivates vines on his own property, and also learns to appreciate a perfect olive oil.The tales of the endless string of visitors, some mere casual acquaintances, and some of whom invite themselves to stay, are also told with humour and restraint, though you definitely get the impression that they felt put upon from time to time. I also discovered that it can be brutally hot during the summer months in Provence, so I'm glad we're going in early spring !"A Year in Provence" is not at all a travelogue, or even a guide book, but is a terrifically entertaining series of essays about living among the French in every season, being accepted (at least to a certain extent) into their culture, and enjoying all that this beautiful country has to offer.

We are traveling in Provence this summer, and a friend recommended that I find and read this book to get a feel for the area. Although it is an older book and times surely have changed somewhat in the almost twenty-five years since it was written, I found it to be highly entertaining as I read about his experiences living in the area. His style is conversational, as if he were sitting in your living room for a chat. His descriptions of the local people, and semi-quoting their conversations is, at times, hilarious. Mayle also does a credible job depicting the countryside, food, travel, and slower lifestyle of the natives of the area. I found this book so entertaining that I also read two others: Toujours Provence, and Encore Provence:New Adventures in the South of France. If you're looking for an insight into the area of Provence France from someone other than a factual travel guide, I highly recommend Peter Mayle's books.

Too many French language descriptions. I have a problem with English speaking authors using French language to describe people or things, especially when English will do just fine. I have a cursory knowledge of French but I had to keep my dictionary nearby when I read this. Other than that, this was an enjoyable read, especially since my wife and I visited the area a month before I read the book.

The book is so well written that It makes you dream of living in Provence. I will be travelling soon to the places in Provence to enjoy the amazing food, beautiful places and friendly people in France. It is sad that Peter Mayle passed recently and I'm very grateful that he wrote this marvellous book.

Being a neophyte to the “travel literature” genre, I wasn’t sure what to expect. But in Peter Mayle’s book “A Year in Provence”, I was surprised how absorbing the reading experience was, without the need for a distinctive narrative plot thrust. After a career on Madison Avenue, Mayle uproots his life and takes residence in the quaint and quirky region of Provence, located in Southeast France. Mayle and his wife realize they have much to learn in navigating their new surroundings. The novel’s structure is quite simple—each chapter is a month in the year—but Mayle’s observations cut into the essence of Provencal life, not just the hidden gems and signature qualities of the region, but reaches for the underlying motivations of the people, the way they move and think, and why no one seems to leave. Part of the enchantment is meeting all these characters—the plumber, the reclusive neighbor, the butcher, the unwanted guests. The prose is simplistic but thoroughly engaging, particularly when Mayle reveals small tidbits in timely places that echo latent cultural rivalries. One word of caution: don’t read on an empty stomach! (You’ll quickly realize what I mean)

I had to read this book as I was headed to Provençe for 2 weeks. I found the book very interesting. The author starts out with life in January and then each month there after. As the book progresses it gets more and more interesting how life is really like for an expat (from England). After we got settled in our apartment, I figured out we were staying within a few miles of where this author lives, though he never discloses exactly. I fell in love with the area from the first drive along narrow N900. At night, the sky is so crystal clear that you can see every star. We left just as the winds of the Fall were starting up. It was great place to visit and even better since I read this book. I don't think I could live here. The author set me straight on that one!

This third submission in the Oxford Tearoom mysteries does not disappoint. As with the first two books, the setting (Oxford College) is nearly a character in itself, so much does it add to the depth and complexity of the story. One of the things I most appreciate about this series is that it dares me to think -- mediocre, trite or inane are NOT words one could apply to Hy Hannna's books! Conversation between the characters and the private thoughts of the protagonist are often insightful and perceptive, and so many red herrings abound that it's quite impossible to finger the murderer, even for a seasoned hand at murder mysteries such as myself. If I have any complaint at all about the books, it's the nickname for the delightfully funny group of elderly ladies who contribute so much to each solution, albeit with a comic twist. The Old Biddies?! I'm a bit too close to that age group myself to appreciate that moniker. I do wish they could be called something just a tad more flattering, such as The Old Dears. In any case, though, a wonderful addition to the series, and leaves one longing for the next book to appear quickly. (Please note that I received a free copy of this book from the author in return for a fair review.)

Gemma Rose decides to investigate this time to try & help her good friend Seth who's become a suspect in the latest murder. This one happens at his college. Red herrings abound in this one. I love trying to guess who did it. (I didn't.)I've rather enjoyed Gemma's mother cooking at the tearoom because it was so funny having her around to aggravate her! I thought whoever the new cook turned out to be, I wouldn't be satisfied. I'm quite sure I'll be wrong about that now after the way they found their new cook. (I got all teary eyed.)Of course the old biddies do bring quite a bit of comedy to the tearoom & beyond, especially when they get tangled up doing their own version of investigating. Somehow it always overlaps with Gemma's which is all the more amusing for the reader. This time was no different.When all was said & done,I'm very happy to say that I finally got my wish for Gemma & Devlin--even if it was at the very end. And how cute is it that Muesli now has Gemma's parent's wrapped around her little paw? No one disturb the cat! (Glad we aren't the only family that does that.) Of course Muesli gets up to her usual mischief which I find so entertaining. The stories just wouldn't be the same without her.As always, the narration is excellent. Pearl Hewitt has a knack for bringing the comedic moments in Ms. Hanna's books (and there are quite a few) to life.Disclosure: A review copy of this audio was sent to me by the author for review. All of the above opinions are my own.

Wish I could say that I enjoyed this book, but the truth is I liked Gemma less and less as the book went on. The style is the same as the first 2 books, a cozy mystery set around the Oxford tea room. Gemma however decides ethics are something you can pickup and put down when circumstances don't work out the way you want. Gemma really lost me as a fan when she demanded, several times, that people around her do the same, and got mad when they won't. She finally seems to realize how she is behaving is wrong and this turnaround would work for me, if Gemma was 15, but supposedly she is a 29 year-old Oxford graduate with almost 10 years experience as a top executive. I really had to struggle to finish this one, I really did not like the book.

Emma Rose and her gang of stalwarts, get involved in yet another murder..this one involving Emma and her BFF, Cassie's former classmate who was completed their troika of University BFF's Seth(who has been the adoring fan of Cassie-unbeknownst to her), a University Don, who has been found with a murder weapon, the now deceased Don and rings up Emma in the middle of the night(from jail) without explanation and begs her to retrieve a note he had left in the now deceased mailbox on one of the Colleges at University before the police find it.Knowing in their heart of hearts that their beloved Seth was simply at the wrong place at the wrong time and possibly in shock..the TeaRoom gang cleverly engages in a search for the real killer that leads them to clues throughout the Cotswolds villages in which they all reside (oh, this is such an inexpensive way to travel back for me) to tie all the loose ends true or false together.Of course there always has to be an additional challenge to the early stages of two separate relationships for Gemma , those being with former beau who still makes her heart beat faster, CID Devlin O'Connor, and the Dr Lincoln Green, the son of Gemma's mum's BFF Helen. And yes, her mum has discovered for good and bad the bennies of the Internet..and she and Helen have gone off to Asia much to the consternation of Gemma since it is something her mum is not the most well travelled person, and her Dad is off on a business trip on the other side of the globe. Yes, indeed, the progression of this cast including the Old Biddies is a delight and I look forward to book # 4..which I have in my possession but do I dare continue..(yes, Book # 5 is just out). Hmm it might be more delicious to save a scone or two with my tea and get on with another yet to be published book I have promised to read.

THE CHRISTIAN LIFE HYMNAL was carefully put together by a mid-South Anglican and released in 2010. It has a great variety of hymns from all regions and worship styles without being excessively "P.C." or "down home." Hymns include "In the Bleak Midwinter," "Leaning on the Everlasting Arms," "Lift Every Voice and Sing," and "God of Our Fathers (NATIONAL HYMN)." I could have stood for the pages to be a wee bit thicker, but at this price I expect it will stay in the market and grace independent-church pews and home pianos for years to come.

We used this hymnal a few years ago when my husband was leading worship at our church. He chose it specifically because of the large selection of Christmas songs. I recently purchased my own copy to use during my daily devotional time and am singing through it only skipping the few that are totally unfamiliar to me.Some of the details that I appreciate are: footnotes that give the meaning of obscure or outdated words, notations that indicate the page to find the music in a lower/higher key with different lyrics, and a short line after the third or fourth stanza when the hymn has six or more verses making it easier to stay on the right line.I especially appreciate being directed to another hymn when the one I'm singing does not have familiar lyrics. An example would be #321, "Singing Songs of Expectation." I have never heard of this hymn, but when I find it is to the melody of #272, "O the Deep, Deep Love of Jesus," I can focus on these words and enjoy the richness of their message.Several of the more recent songs and choruses that are becoming classics are included. However, with a copyright date of 2006, the most recent ones will not be found. Since our church sings almost entirely choruses during worship, I am delighting in the depth of meaning found in these hymns that have stood the test of time, some dating back to the 12th century.As you can see from this listing, there is also an accompanist's loose-leaf edition available which includes the chord notations.I would highly recommend this hymnal for personal, family or congregational use. It will greatly enrich your worship experience.

This hymnal is similar in appearance, both inside and out, to our older hymnal which is soon to be retired. It has a good mix of traditional hymns with a tasteful selection of more contemporary ones by authors like Fred Pratt Green, Keith Getty, Stuart Townsend and Twila Paris. One thing that it lacks, however, is scripture resources for choral responsive reading. We use these in our church but could probably get them from a supplement of some kind in our hymnbook racks.

The Christian Life Hymnal was recommended to me by someone on an accompaniment forum who used it at church services because it contains a host of well known songs in different keys. I found it to be a great resource for some lesser known and beautiful arrangements of songs that fit very well into service. I highly recommend it as an addition to a standard musical library of well known hymnals and religious music books.

I am so happy with this hymnal. It has all the classic hymns that I grew up on. I love it!
