He has turned it into much more, a wide-ranging examination of how we view "wilderness," subsistence hunting and fishing, and relationships between national parks and Native peoples. Those issues raise lots of questions about human relationships with nature and with one another, topics that reach beyond Alaska or the national parks.Catton also gives us capsule histories of several parks in Alaska - - Glacier Bay, Denali, and Gates of the Arctic. Aside from the moment of establishment, the literature on Alaskan parks is surprisingly thin, so it's great to have this book as a resource. Catton also gives substantial attention to Bob Marshall's interest in Alaskan wilderness.This is an academic book. Despite the academic language, Catton gives us a lively narrative of the Alaskan national parks and the indigenous peoples who live in and among them. If you are interested in going beyond the tourist experience in America's national parks, this should definitely be part of your library.
