My daughter played "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy" at a piano concert using this composition from "Nutcracker". My husband is her teacher and remarked it is more realistic variation for an intermediate student than the original "Nutcracker".

This book was perfect for my intermediate piano students! It sounds authentic but without being impossibly difficult! Excellent book!

This performance and recording by Mehta & IPO / Bonynge & NPO of Tchaikovsky's Ballet Suites is is atmospheric, transcendent - a treat for the soul. It will sweep you away into the beautiful, emotional world of Tchaikovsky's music.

I weaned myself off of 150mg Effexor XR in 2007 over a 4 month period and suffered greatly for it, most especially in the long run (ie, 7 months later). I had a false relapse of major depression because of it and went on another drug. At this time, I'm in contact with a woman through an online forum who is going through an Effexor taper (down dose) at this moment. She is following this book to the letter and purchasing TBR supplements. Her journey isn't easy but it is a lot more positive than mine was. In the future, I will use the guidelines in this book to taper (down dose) off of my current medication, which is not a "dirty" drug like Effexor. The secret is this book, a Paleo or JNK diet, and patience. You have to give your brain and body time to adjust and return to homeostasis via SLOW, small incremental changes. In short, following this book, changing your lifestyle, and going as slowly as possible is key. Don't become arrogant or frustrated. You'll go too fast and crash. Be smart--not emotional. The drug withdrawals will be emotional enough for you. Ha! UPDATE: I'm currently using The Road Back Program and their TRB detox/taper kits. I actually feel better OFF of this drug than ON it. The only side-effect I'm having is that I'm tired. I may order AdMax/FemLife and see how it works. I'm tapering slowly (3 months) and just started personal training 3x week, so it's hard to tell what is causing what. (For dirty drugs like, Effexor or Paxil you may need to take 2 years to detox. Do what's right for YOU.) UPDATE: JANUARY 2014, I'm completely off all unwanted medication and have been for a few months now. I still take a sleeping aid at bedtime, but I'm happy with that. I feel clear-headed and even-keeled for the first time in about 13 years. I wish I'd never taken an antidepressant but I really wish I'd found this program sooner than I did. It's worth the effort and even the money--and I'm tight with money. ANOTHER UPDATE: JUNE 2014: I'm still off of all psychiatric medication except for my bedtime dose of a hypnotic. I haven't had any psych issues--just dealing with the pain of wasting years (and money) sedated on not needed medication.

I had a scary experience with trying to get off Cymbalta that I was in no way prepared for. I don't think my doctor even knew the extent of what I should expect! This book helped me navigate through this horrible experience and definitely made me aware that I need to research a medication thoroughly before putting it in my body. I feel that any doctor prescribing any type of psychoactive medications should read this book! I imagine that doctor's that prescribe these medications on a daily basis for depression or other types of psychological issues have a better understanding of the possible side effects and the withdrawal symptoms. I was prescribed Cymbalta for Fibromyalgia however, by a general practitioner and I believe he knew very little about it. As patients, especially ones with chronic illnesses, we must advocate for ourselves! That means learning everything we can about a medication BEFORE putting it into our bodies!! I definitely learned a lot from this book that has become one of many resources for me. I'd recommend reading it if you are currently taking a psychoactive medication or preferably before taking one if you're prescribed it.

I had no idea I was made into a drug addict, but my withdrawals were no different from those OD the Heroin Addicts or Alcoholics I have helped withdraw in my career as a Registered Nurse.You may find yourself shocked to discover that you are addicted to a drug prescribed for you well being. I wept over my bodies pain coming off Cymbalta. I would have suffered greatly or maybe I would have been forced to go back on Cymbalta because I almost could not bare the withdrawal had it not been for The Road Back solutions! This knowledge separated out what I thought was illness to the realization that they were Cymbalta side effects all along. Reading this book, several times over, and purchasing these supplements , 4 times i purchased the benzo package and still continuing on them, has literally saved my life.I had tried unsuccessful attempts in the past to rid myself of the meds but always ended up back on them. I was on klonopin and was hooked in a short period of time.It has been just over 2 months now off the meds and have just started feeling back to myself about a week ago. Getting off the drugs has got to be the most difficult challenges I have ever faced and a test for my 30 year marriage. There were times I could not even get myself out of bed let alone dress myself. I carried my bottle of klonopin with me everywhere for that "just in case" I couldnt make it through. I reached for the supplements instead. Anxiety held on to me and had a death grip I didnt think I would ever shake.The author of the book, Jim Harper was a great source of support for me. He always returned my emails and was helpful suggesting tweeking the supplements for me . I still get tingling and a bit of fuzziness feeling in my head but anxiety is gone. I suggest to anyone , have patience when following the guidelines in this book and as you are reducing your dosage. Thank you, thank you Mr Jim Harper and this book !!!

Each chapter stands alone as a lesson. We read one chapter for each lesson. The story is well done and the movement from chapter to chapter keeps my student interested in the book. I totally recommend this book for individual reading, oral reading to a class, or as a tool to teach reading to someone who has basic skills and wants to improve those skills.

This author takes historical people and events and creates a story to go along with it. My son, who is 12, loves this author so much we have purchased every book written by him. They have kept his attention, and he has reread several. My son's time and energy going into a book instead of an electronic device, can't ask for much more!

Its a great little book about dogs and a young woman who raced in the Iditerod.Takes you thru the hardship and the stress that the dogs and drivers are under, its not an easy race.Its a youngster's book as well as a quick read for an adult.We have several other of Scott O'Dell's books, I think my favourite is Island of the Blue Dolphins.

I am looking for books for teens and have enjoyed O'dell's books. This was a good story of and teen running in the Iditerod race and also a glimpse of the life of an Eskimo girl and how she was living in two worlds. The old one of her Eskimo parents and the modern one of education and more choices. It was exciting and entertaining also.

My daughter loved Island of the Blue Dolphins so we purchased more books from Scott Odell... she enjoyed every one of them.

Purchased this for my 10-year old granddaughter who loves wolves and she really liked the book.

I liked it but the ending was a little bit disappointing. Otherwise, I enjoyed reading this book. I didn't like that she wasn't first but this book did have a lesson. It's not about her winning it's about how much she cared about everyone else even though it was a race, and they were her opponents. She didn't' want anybody to feel that the race was unfair. It was about how much she cared about respecting the other opponents and having good sportsmanship that allowed her to be awarded. Because those qualities do matter. It shows that even if you're not very good at something that if you are respectful to others and have good sportsmanship that it pays off, that it matters. Still try your hardest but don't be disappointed if you can't do something because as long as you have good sportsmanship and you respect others that it matters.

About the Author

Dr. Cornelia E. Davis, better known as Connie, is an author, speaker, renowned epidemiologist and disease detective. She was sent by the World Health Organization (WHO) to Ethiopia in 1990 to help African Ministries of Health prevent or control outbreaks of meningococcal meningitis. While working in Addis Ababa, she was caught up in the fast-moving civil war and stayed behind as Acting Director of the WHO EPR Centre when UN staff were evacuated. A series of events led her to a three-month-old infant found on the steps of St. George's Cathedral. She described this exciting adventure in her new memoir, Three Years in Ethiopia.Connie was raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, attended Gonzaga University, and was one of the first black women admitted to the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine (1968). After finishing a pediatric residency, she was hired by WHO to work in the Smallpox Eradication Program in India (1975-77). This highly successful program changed her medical focus and inspired her first book, Searching for Sitala Mata: Eradicating Smallpox in India.Connie earned her Masters of Public Health (MPH) degree from Johns Hopkins School of Public Health and went on to work in the EIS (Epidemic Intelligence Service) at the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta. For the next 30 years, she battled disease outbreaks in Africa and Asia for WHO and USAID. An intrepid world traveler, she has worked in or traveled to 97 countries and territories. She lives on the northern shores of Lake Chapala near Guadalajara, Mexico.

While you might not agree with Peter Fitzsimmons’ views on an Australian Republic or Rugby Football, he is, without a doubt, a gifted writer. His meticulous research and the use of literary licence to string the facts together in a readable form, bring history to life. The story of Batavia is a previously little-known chapter in history - the almost unbelievable chain of events and the insight into the imperious officialdom of the Dutch East India Company make for a read which is hard to put down. I have read “Kokoda” and “Batavia”, both excellent accounts of significant historical events, and I certainly intend to read more of his books. Highly Recommended.

This book is well researched to the extent possible for such a poorly understood event. Many readers may be dismayed by the brutality documented throughout. I was going to recommend it to my wife but decided the brutality (even if accurate) was too excessive to make the book enjoyable. As they would say in a movie or TV show "reader discretion is advised".

It's a really interesting story for all history buffs. Yes it is bloody and gory but so was life 500 years agoIf you contrast what these shipwreck sailors and passengers did to their Own countrymen with what happened in Japanese POW camps in WW2 then it is true what Orwell saidPower corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely

A bit slow to start and seems a little far fetched as the author sets the scene for the coming events. However all theearly reasoning is later shown to be sound and very believable, well researched and logical. I like the way he tells the storyas a dispassionate observer and from the shipwreck on, the book becomes hard to put down. My wife and I both readthe book just after visiting the island groups where the shipwreck occurred and actually snorkelling off East Wallaby island in early summer. The islands are dead flat barely above the sea and have only shrubs as protection from the normally prevailing SW winds, the Batavia wreck was in June the start of winter and though cold, they did get rain. I'm sure if the wreck had been in summer most would have died. When you put the book down you are left questioning how you would have handled the same situation and how those that survived felt as they lived out the rest of their lives.

Batavia, by Peter Fitzsimons, is simply one of the best books I have EVER read. If you are interested in Australian history, even just a little bit, you will thoroughly enjoy this book and may even learn something. If you enjoy reading a thrilling adventure, you will love this book. The story of Batavia, as told by Fitzsimons, is all the more enjoyable because it based on events that really happened. Fitzsimons has gone to great lengths to reference his sources and to note where he has used creative license. Finally, as Fitzsimons writes in his introduction, "It combines in just the one tale such momentous elements as the world's first corporation, the brutality of colonisation, the battle of good versus evil, the derring-do of seafaing adventure, mutiny, love, lust, bloodlust, greed, treasure, criminality, a reign of terror, murders most foul, sexual slavery, natural nobility, survival, retribution, resuce, first contact with native peoples and so much more." This is a lofty description for any book to live up to, and I doubted that any could, but live up to it Batavia does and with ease.

This book grabs you by the throat and never lets you go. It is well documented and historically accurate.A fascinating lesson in the rich, and not so charitable history of the Netherlands , Indonesia and Australia in the 1600's. (That is where it became a bestseller.)The book is not for the faint of heart and paints a very graphic picture, including maps and archival photographs, of the life and times of the Dutch seafarers in the "Golden Age" of Holland as well as the events that followed the tragic shipwreck off the Australian coast.The reasons the Dutch were successful in those years is that they outfought, out-sailed, out-killed and outsmarted the major completion from Portugal, England, Spain. Their management of the Indonesian islands was less that "cordial" to say the least.In our modern times, it is a valuable retrospect of the harsh world that our ancestors had to survive.Don't miss it!

It deserved five stars due to the way it could not be put down. I hated it if I had to wait to read on and how excited I was with nervous anticipation of what was coming next even though I knew the synopsis already. I loved all the background history as well.This was recommended to me by a friend who is a political analyst and well travelled. I thought to myself is it just a man's book but no, it could appeal to all who find truth stranger than fiction.

I love learning about people who overcame great odds to do extraordinary things, and the nature of this book - being a picture book - makes it a great opportunity to teach my kids about one such situation.
