I use this book with my adult literacy tutoring student. This is the second O'Dell book we have used and both are structured perfectly for a student to learn from. Each chapter stands alone as a lesson. We read one chapter for each lesson. The story is well done and the movement from chapter to chapter keeps my student interested in the book. I totally recommend this book for individual reading, oral reading to a class, or as a tool to teach reading to someone who has basic skills and wants to improve those skills.

This author takes historical people and events and creates a story to go along with it. My son, who is 12, loves this author so much we have purchased every book written by him. They have kept his attention, and he has reread several. My son's time and energy going into a book instead of an electronic device, can't ask for much more!

Its a great little book about dogs and a young woman who raced in the Iditerod.Takes you thru the hardship and the stress that the dogs and drivers are under, its not an easy race. Its a youngster's book as well as a quick read for an adult. We have several other of Scott O'Dell's books, I think my favourite is Island of the Blue Dolphins.

I am looking for books for teens and have enjoyed O'dell's books. This was a good story of and teen running in the Iditerod race and also a glimpse of the life of an Eskimo girl and how she was living in two worlds. The old one of her Eskimo parents and the modern one of education and more choices. It was exciting and entertaining also.

Another great historical book and useful for my Children's Literature class

My daughter loved Island of the Blue Dolphins so we purchased more books from Scott Odell... she enjoyed every one of them.

Purchased this for my 10-year old granddaughter who loves wolves and she really liked the book.

I liked it but the ending was a little bit disappointing. Otherwise, I enjoyed reading this book. I didn't like that she wasn't first but this book did have a lesson. It's not about her winning it's about how much she cared about everyone else even though it was a race, and they were her opponents. She didn't' want anybody to feel that the race was unfair. It was about how much she cared about respecting the other opponents and having good sportsmanship that allowed her to be awarded. Because those qualities do matter. It shows that even if you're not very good at something that if you are respectful to others and have good sportsmanship that it pays off, that it matters. Still try your hardest but don't be disappointed if you can't do something because as long as you have good sportsmanship and you respect others that it matters.

About the Author

Dr. Cornelia E. Davis, better known as Connie, is an author, speaker, renowned epidemiologist and disease detective. She was sent by the World Health Organization (WHO) to Ethiopia in 1990 to help African Ministries of Health prevent or control outbreaks of meningococcal meningitis. While working in Addis Ababa, she was caught up in the fast-moving civil war and stayed behind as Acting Director of the WHO EPR Centre when UN staff were evacuated. A series of events led her to a three-month-old infant found on the steps of St. George's Cathedral. She described this exciting adventure in her new memoir, Three Years in Ethiopia.Connie was raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, attended Gonzaga University, and was one of the first black women admitted to the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine (1968). After finishing a pediatric residency, she was hired by WHO to work in the Smallpox Eradication Program in India (1975-77). This highly successful program changed her medical focus and inspired her first book, Searching for Sitala Mata: Eradicating Smallpox in India.Connie earned her Masters of Public Health (MPH) degree from Johns Hopkins School of Public Health and went on to work in the EIS (Epidemic Intelligence Service) at the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta. For the next 30 years, she battled disease outbreaks in Africa and Asia for WHO and USAID. An intrepid world traveler, she has worked in or traveled to 97 countries and territories. She lives on the northern shores of Lake Chapala near Guadalajara, Mexico.

Even though the events are several years in the past, the author's recall is still so vividly alive with the emotions of her experience. The uncertainties of living in a war torn country are not something most of us will ever know and the majority of us would probably have taken the first available flight back to "civilization." But the author is plucky, tenacious, optimistic and just a little bit cynical...all traits that serve her well. Her love for what she is does and the determination to find the child she wants to adopt make it a story that goes beyond an account of living through a civil war.

A memoir of a courageous and adventurous woman who embarks on a journey to adopt a baby in Ethiopia while working for the World Health Organization. Follow her as she overcomes the obstacles presented by epidemics and an ever-encroaching civil war. Letting her intuition guide her, she stays true to her quest to find the daughter of her dreams. The book will capture you on both a personal and historical level.

A fascinating write up of a doctors work in Ethiopia. An adventure which also introduces many interesting facts about Ethiopia.I really liked the book and recommend it.

Well written solid narrative recounting time in war torn Ethopia of young American doctor. I read this compelling and dramatic memoir--really a love story--in a single sitting and definitely recommend it.

Memoir, history, geography, love story, war, and medicine interestingly wrapped in one fascinating read. SJJ

Cornelia Davis tells her story as though she was sitting the room with you. Her her actions are bold and effective. It is an exciting tale of another world to us Westerners. Also, it is filled with facts and history that one would not come across. An exciting read AND a true story. Kudos!

This book unfolds a deeply personal experience of a woman adopting a child who otherwise faced a bleak, uncertain future. It also offers a compelling view of history at the personal level, which is always more fascinating than scholars and the media can offer. Read it!

While you might not agree with Peter Fitzsimmons’ views on an Australian Republic or Rugby Football, he is, without a doubt, a gifted writer. His meticulous research and the use of literary licence to string the facts together in a readable form, bring history to life. The story of Batavia is a previously little-known chapter in history - the almost unbelievable chain of events and the insight into the imperious officialdom of the Dutch East India Company make for a read which is hard to put down. I have read “Kokoda” and “Batavia”, both excellent accounts of significant historical events, and I certainly intend to read more of his books. Highly Recommended.

This book is well researched to the extent possible for such a poorly understood event. Many readers may be dismayed by the brutality documented throughout. I was going to recommend it to my wife but decided the brutality (even if accurate) was too excessive to make the book enjoyable. As they would say in a movie or TV show "reader discretion is advised".

It's a really interesting story for all history buffs. Yes it is bloody and gory but so was life 500 years agoIf you contrast what these shipwreck sailors and passengers did to their Own countrymen with what happened in Japanese POW camps in WW2 then it is true what Orwell saidPower corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely

A bit slow to start and seems a little far fetched as the author sets the scene for the coming events. However all theearly reasoning is later shown to be sound and very believable, well researched and logical. I like the way he tells the storyas a dispassionate observer and from the shipwreck on, the book becomes hard to put down. My wife and I both readthe book just after visiting the island groups where the shipwreck occurred and actually snorkelling off East Wallaby island in early summer. The islands are dead flat barely above the sea and have only shrubs as protection from the normally prevailing SW winds, the Batavia wreck was in June the start of winter and though cold, they did get rain. I'm sure if the wreck had been in summer most would have died. When you put the book down you are left questioning how you would have handled the same situation and how those that survived felt as they lived out the rest of their lives.

Batavia, by Peter Fitzsimons, is simply one of the best books I have EVER read. If you are interested in Australian history, even just a little bit, you will thoroughly enjoy this book and may even learn something. If you enjoy reading a thrilling adventure, you will love this book. The story of Batavia, as told by Fitzsimons, is all the more enjoyable because it based on events that really happened. Fitzsimons has gone to great lengths to reference his sources and to note where he has used creative license. Finally, as Fitzsimons writes in his introduction, "It combines in just the one tale such momentous elements as the world's first corporation, the brutality of colonisation, the battle of good versus evil, the derring-do of seafaing adventure, mutiny, love, lust, bloodlust, greed, treasure, criminality, a reign of terror, murders most foul, sexual slavery, natural nobility, survival, retribution, resuce, first contact with native peoples and so much more." This is a lofty description for any book to live up to, and I doubted that any could, but live up to it Batavia does and with ease.

This book grabs you by the throat and never lets you go. It is well documented and historically accurate.A fascinating lesson in the rich, and not so charitable history of the Netherlands , Indonesia and Australia in the 1600's. (That is where it became a bestseller.)The book is not for the faint of heart and paints a very graphic picture, including maps and archival photographs, of the life and times of the Dutch seafarers in the "Golden Age" of Holland as well as the events that followed the tragic shipwreck off the Australian coast. The reasons the Dutch were successful in those years is that they outfought, out-sailed, out-killed and outsmarted the major completion from Portugal, England, Spain. Their management of the Indonesian islands was less that "cordial" to say the least. In our modern times, it is a valuable retrospect of the harsh world that our ancestors had to survive.Don't miss it!

It deserved five stars due to the way it could not be put down. I hated it if I had to wait to read on and how excited I was with nervous anticipation of what was coming next even though I knew the synopsis already. I loved all the background history as well. This was recommended to me by a friend who is a political analyst and well travelled. I thought to myself is it just a man's book but no, it could appeal to all who find truth stranger than fiction.

Could not put it down.

This is a vivid biography of Irving Berlin, beautifully told and charmingly illustrated. An inspiring story about a poor Jewish immigrant boy who daydreams too much and sings to himself. As a teenager, he keeps singing. As an adult, he goes on to writing songs, even in the bath tub. And he gives all the money he made from his song, “God Bless America” to the Boy and Girl Scouts of America.

Israel Baline, an immigrant, moves to America and eventually becomes Irving Berlin, one of America's most notable and celebrated song writers. Write On, Irving Berlin shows this evolution and a development of talent against difficult odds and circumstances. The text is easy for kids to understand, and is enhanced by whimsical and illustrations. This book is a great read and resource.

Leslie Kimmelman's book, "Write on Irving Berlin," really gives readers an insiders view into the life and times of Irving Berlin. There are fascinating facts sprinkled throughout--that a Jewish immigrant wrote the songs: "White Christmas" and "God Bless America," and so much more! Plus, I had no idea that he scribbled ideas on napkins, the sleeves of his shirts, and wrote songs in elevators, taxicabs, and while he was in the bathtub!Karen Rostoker-Gruber

Wow! What a fantastic story! I learned so much reading this book. This is a really interesting story about a great composer who wrote music for our country during some of its most trying times. I had no idea that some really well known songs - God Bless America and White Christmas were written by the same person with such an interesting background. I love learning about people who overcame great odds to do extraordinary things, and the nature of this book - being a picture book - makes it a great opportunity to teach my kids about one such situation. Highly recommended!

Review

“A travelogue of love and scholarship. . . . [It] does the region splendid justice.” —The New York Times “Many have tried this before—to get hold of, in its entirety, the volatile, beautiful, relentlessly shifting Caribbean. Nobody has succeeded as dazzlingly.” —Marlon James, author of A Brief History of Seven Killings“This terrific travel narrative . . . is also a magnificent musical journey (reggae, salsa and ska), a literary odyssey . . . and a heartfelt historical voyage. Island People powerfully shows how places shape people, and how people shape places.” —The Observer “Joshua Jelly-Schapiro possesses both a humanist’s irrepressible empathy and a journalist’s necessary skepticism. He reports carefully, researches exhaustively, cares deeply, and writes beautifully.”—Dave Eggers, author of Heroes of the Frontier  “Joshua Jelly-Schapiro’s grand book on the Caribbean is so striking in form and vision that it amounts to something new—a constant surprise.”—Hilton Als, author of White Girls  “Written with passion and joyful music in the prose, Island People will become an indispensable companion for anybody traveling to the Caribbean—or dreaming of doing so.”—Suketu Mehta, author of Maximum City: Bombay Lost and Found

Certainly there are scholars who know more about individual islands, but no one combines Jelly-Schapiro's breadth of knowledge--in history, literature, music, culture--with his writerly flare, on-the-ground reporting, and passion to show why and how "the Caribbean belongs at the center of any story we tell about the making of our modern world." An amazing work, ideal of teaching.Marlon James was right: "Many have tried this before -- to get hold of, in its entirety, the volatile, beautiful, relentlessly shifting Caribbean. Nobody has succeeded as dazzlingly as Joshua Jelly-Schapiro."

In ISLAND PEOPLE, Joshua Jelly-Schapiro takes his readers along with him on extended visits to more than a dozen Caribbean islands, including multiple chapters each on Jamaica, Cuba, and Haiti. With an accessible style, he shares the islands’ commonalities and differences through their varied histories and their music, literature, art, and politics. Much is revealed through personal exchanges and island-roaming with new-found local friends and acquaintances. Jelly-Schapiro’s travels here span more than the past decade, and he sometimes revisits friends made in previous chapters, thus showing recent directions of change. This is not a tourists’ guide to hotels, restaurants, and sights. Rather, this is travel writing at its finest, perhaps the best first-person narrative of experiences across the Caribbean since the classic THE TRAVELLER'S TREE by Patrick Leigh Fermor was published in 1950.I bought the hardback of Island People when it was released in November 2016, and read it slowly over three weeks, savoring each story/chapter. I very much enjoyed revisiting islands, music, and books I’ve had the pleasure of becoming acquainted with in person, and contemplating others I’d still like to visit and get to know better. (Now added to my Bucket List thanks to this book are Montserrat, Martinique, and Dominica.) ISLAND PEOPLE is a big book. Literally. Wanting to re-read chapters while traveling myself, I also have bought the Kindle edition. It’s that good.

A fantastic book. Informative, entertaining and insightful a wonderful read. Highly recommended.

Really interesting read. Happened upon this by chance.

Insightful, engaging "off-the-tourist-map" perspective of the people, culture, and history of the islands.

I picked this up expecting to get a first-hand account of Caribbean life. This is nothing more than a privileged American's account of travelling. He spends his entire Jamaica section talking about Bob Marley. The Cuban section was OK, but spent more time giving a history lesson of Cuba than actually talking about the people of Cuba. I expected more out of this. Disappointed.

Boring and Racist

This is a very fine book, among the best available about the Caribbean. It is not a travel guide, it is not a history but has aspects of both. Jelly-Schapiro loves the islands, and knows them well. The book is a sort of travelogue, with sizable chunks of history mixed in, and a good deal of what might be described as participant narration, about celebrations, conversations, trips and such that he and friends from the various places did together. The writing is excellent, opinionated, sometimes humorous, sometimes a bit preachy and sometimes passionate. He knows a great deal about music, and it got a bit technical in places when he describes the music and history of music in Cuba, Jamaica and elsewhere. The book has a useless map and no illustrations; more of both would strengthen it. There's also no index, making it hard to look for something you read.It starts in Jamaica, with a lot about Jamaican music and the Marley folks. I was amazed to learn that one small area produced Marcus Garvey, Harry Belafonte and Bob Marley. There's a good deal about politics. Then he moves on to Cuba, and these sections are wonderful. There's a lot about life in Cuba, Cuban music, the Castros, and politics, and explores the difficult subject of white and black Cubans. He plainly likes Cuba and Cubans. One thing I had not read of before; Cuba imported 800,000 slaves 1790-1867 but got 30,000 refugees from the Haitian revolution and embarked on a deliberate campaign to whiten Cuba by bringing over peasants from places lie Andalusia and Galicia. The next section is on Puerto Rico, including a lot of history that will not be familiar to most Americans. The Spanish authorities also tried a campaign of whitening the populace, bringing in an amazing mix, not just Spanish peasants but also Catalans, French, Corsicans, Irish and Genoese. His discussion of the island as an American possession is damning of American assumptions and government. Then on to the Dominican Republic and Haiti. He doesn't seem to like the Dominicans much, or at least their government, and much of the section is about Haitian folks in the DR, which recently decided to deport Haitians--only partly done, but the 1930s massacres of Haitians in the DR is in the background. His sections about Haiti are the best I have ever read about the island, mixing recent and longer-term history with politics--he likes the Haitians, really likes them. That's much of the book. The remainder is the smaller islands, including the Caymans, Grenada, Barbuda, Montserrat and Antigua. He discusses the politics of the revolution in Grenada in some detail, and again US policy and actions come across as ill-informed. The next section is on the French Guadeloupe and Martinique, one of the most interesting parts of the book. Much of it amounts to an analysis of the impact of two writers, Frantz Fanon and Aimee Cesaire, which some readers may find tedious, although their influence on the left and on African intellectuals has been great (not so much influence in the English-speaking world). A chapter on Dominica likewise is largely a discussion of the life of Jean Rhys (who wrote "The Wide Sargasso Sea")--but it uses that discussion to consider Dominican history and culture. The book ends in Trinidad, a lively section, with carnival, music and complicated politics, perhaps the best I have read about the place.Aside from the weaknesses of no index, no illustrations and a lousy map, this is an exceptional book that I recommend highly.

I tried to be cute and buy this book 1st instead of the ventilator book that was a mistake. I would recommend reading the ventilator book before reading the advanced ventilator book although this book was very informative as a nurse I only really needed to know the information presented in the ventilator book. The one useful thing about this book was that it talked about ECMO which prior to reading that chapter I had very little to no understanding about. Some of the other chapters had a lot of equations and chemistry in them that as a nurse you don’t need to know.

Not the ultimate reference, but a well reasoned compendium of respiratory care with heavy focus on ARDS. Helpful for nurses, doctors, and students alike.

Concise, helpful, clear. I like how it summarizes in a few quick bullets at the end of each chapter.

Greater depth than the introduction book, very clear and well explained.Great review for anyone working with ventilators, the Kindle version is best for me.

Did its job, its a book..

Good book for respiratory technicians

To the point and very practical. Information just needed.

What an amazing read. Great overview of basic concepts.

I started reading this last week, a month or so after I read the Alchemist. This story held the same mystical magic in it as the Alchemist, but the religious undertones were much more pronounced because of the actual journey. Just like in the Alchemist, I felt like Coelho was pausing the story from time to time to say something directly to me, the reader. He had such wonderful messages about how to experience agape love, let go of the things that tether us, and free ourselves from the things that are distracting us from our true destiny. I'm convinced that I must now try to read everything Coelho has written (which is a lot!). He's truly a wonderful writer and offers God given words.

I have walked to Santiago twice, once west across the northern tier of Spain and once north from Porto near the Portuguese coast. I caught myself wishing I had read Coelho's book before starting on the Strange Road to Santiago. Now I'm relieved that I didn't because my experience of the pilgrimage was so similar to his in the most meaningful ways. I needed to discover it for myself. I plan to walk to Santiago again in a few weeks on the gentle route south from Spain's Atlantic coast, and I'll do it with the special joy of taking my friend Coelho's along.

Below is what I had written in March 2017 but I found out in July 2017 that this book is not ended properly. It is missing the last chapter Santiago de Compostela. The previous chapter is not properly ended either. "...caused the blade of my sword to glisten" was not how Paulo Coelho finished the book. I think all purchaser of the book deserve an explanation from Amazon and HarperOne. I found this very bizarre. So I changed from an original 5-star rating to a 2-star.I read The Pilgrimage more than once. The first time I read it was when I was traveling in Spain and Morocco. This is the type of books that feeds our souls. Though Paulo has other books perhaps more popular The Pilgrimage remains my favorite. It is more for mature readers. I recommend it to everyone who wants to add a bit food to our spiritual journey and pursue life with enthusiasm, wisdom and courage.

I knew this was an allegorical read from the start. I just finished the Camino and had hoped to find more of a connection with the physical aspects of the journey. But alas not. ANd after finishing I wished i could say I get the message he was trying to convey. Thought the plus edition might have some questions for readers to help one decipher the true meaning of this book. perhaps somethings were lost in the transaltion of this book from his native language to english.

~Summary~The Pilgrimage is about one mans journey to find himself through the excuse of finding his sword. At first, the main character had gone through a set of trails not specifically talked about in the book, to earn the right to have his sword. But because of his impatiance, he has to prove himself by taveling down the Road of Santiago. There, he meets his mentor who will teach him the practices that he has to use to find his sword. The main meat of the book is the main character on this journey. Whether he finds his sword or not will be up to you to find out.~Impressions~To be honest, there were parts of this book that made it hard to read. Some parts just made you loes intrest. But to conteract that, there were parts where the words flowed naturally off of the page to make not reading on to the next chapter hard. The book teaches a lot about the human mind and how most people think and I found that interesting. I loved how it emphsized the importance of having mental toughness in life as that is truth.~Recommendations~I would recommend this book to anyone having trouble finding themselves. This book has a lot to do with that and may provide some answers for said person. Coming from a teenage male perspective, I feel like it can relate a bit to my group. Would read again in a few years.

I hope to one day walk the Camino to Santiago de Compostela so read this book looking for insight. At times the spiritual visions were moving, other times long. This is a book that could carry different insights and meaning at different times, through multiple readings.

The Pilgrimage is the story of Paulo Coelho's journey on The Road to Santiago. During his journey he discovers the secrets of wisdom, love, and God who resides in all of us. It's very interesting and even entertaining to read. He describes all the excersices and practices to obtain the secrets of the world and describes some of the religious visions he has, that sometimes seem like he was having a trip off some psychedelic drugs. Very interesting read.

I think my own expectations lessened my liking for this book. I was not expecting a how-to walk the Camino, but perhaps a more objective real-life account of one’s personal experience. This genre, which I can’t even name or describe, is unfamiliar to me, and I struggle with “this really happened?” Or “Is this just fantasy?” I’m not familiar with Coelho’s style of writing, and this just didn’t win me over. But...I stuck with it, wanting to see if there was resolution.
