I enjoyed the Heart of Islam, however, it reads more like an academic textbook with a lot of history and interpretation of historical events.

Frankly, this book is an antidote for all the hate-mongering, anti-Islamic propaganda that one sees in such prevalence today. Since 9/11, people are understandably concerned about Islam and certain elements within it who are seemingly out to destroy America and Western civilization. Professor Nasr does a wonderful job at not only distancing Islam from those thugs who misuse it, but also revealing the true beauty and diversity of Islam which at its heart stands for beauty, compassion, love and justice. Nasr goes in depth to describe the differences between Sunnis, Shia and Sufis, the rights and responsibilities of members of the Islamic community-including Shariah-and the ethical and spiritual nature of human life from the Islamic perspective. One could say that Nasr's description of Islam is a kinder, gentler version than one is used to hearing, but unfortunately for the bigots, it is also firmly rooted in the facts.Many people often use the prevalence of Islamic terrorists as an argument against Islam itself, claiming that if all these people use Islam to justify their deeds, the religion itself must be violent. Nasr answers this with a simple, but to my eyes accurate response, that being that Muslims do violence in the name of their religion because unlike most Westerners, they still do everything in the name of their religion. While we in the west, even most believers, have become completely secularized, most Muslims still live their entire daily life enveloped in God and religion.Nasr also makes some interesting and necessary comparisons between Islamic and Western civilization, pointing out some rather unpleasant truths for those of us who take our moral superiority for granted. He also points out the arrogance of certain people who ask "what went wrong?" with Islamic civilization when one could certainly stand to ask that question of our own society. Muslims, like any other people, simply want the right to develop and live in their own ways without having foreign powers impose their will and ideas on them. In any event, this is a great introduction to both the religion and civilization of Islam from a brilliant Muslim who has lived in both East and West and wants nothing more than for Westerners to understand and respect the Heart of Islam.

Fifteen brilliant essays about diverse aspects of language, including sign language, esperanto, the almost dead language of Manx, Tammet's introduction to Lithuanian, his mastery of French, and much more. In every essay Tammet familiarizes himself extensively with the subject. Having synesthesia and a wide-ranging memory he easily picks up foreign languages. He befriends Les Murray, an Australian poet, and translates Murray's poetry into French. In his essay about the French novel, La Disparition, which entirely omits the letter "e", Tammet pulls the same trick, and it's barely noticeable.

Purchased this book due to notable reviews which I no longer follow. I believed to be a history source of word origins but it is nothing but a self appraising autobio!

Daniel Tammet’s world is judgment-free. He observes and absorbs. He is fascinated by the tiny, and digs until he finds it. It blooms in his hands, taking on all kinds of attributes. He assigns connections and relationships to ever-smaller units of his observations. He delights in his manufactured cosmos of letters, numbers and colors. But there it ends.He is an interesting character. In his first public speech, he recited the value of pi. To 22,000 places. From memory. Over a five hour period. His particular flavor of autism has given him great powers. But very little of this book is about him.Every Word Is A Bird We Teach To Sing is a survey of interpersonal communications. There are chapters on telephone etiquette, the deaf, OuLiPo (fun exercises with words and letters) and various foreign languages. Tammet likes words and he has long chains of them (with translation) that he appreciates for their sound or their spelling or their power. So he is especially appreciative of poetry and its multipurposed words. He cites many snippets of poems, translating when necessary.But it is just a survey. He draws no conclusions. He does not leverage or even connect. The endless chains of foreign words are totally forgettable. Everything he writes about is covered in far greater depth elsewhere. And it is all much less interesting than his own stories of adapting to society, for example, teaching English to Lithuanian women at the age of 19 - knowing no Lithuanian at all. So the best chapters are the first three – about him. The rest are linked in that he discusses means of interpersonal communication. But don’t ask why, because he doesn’t say. This book is very basic, and focused pretty much exclusively on 'size' words, but overall it's a great bilingual book for children or learning adults. The art style is definitely weird, but there is lots of detail, and I really enjoyed the illustrations. I just wish it was longer!

I'm new to Italy and trying to learn along with my two year old. This book is a great break from flash cards and language apps. The art is excellent with tons of detail -- we find something new with each reading.

My 2 year old loves when myself or my husband read this book to her. She actually asks us to read it. I love the way it's written in both Italian and English.

This might be my 8 month old's favorite book! I speak Italian and I love reading her this simple story. I think at this age she likes the repetition and silly voices, but later she'll probably be more interested in the very cute and intricate illustrations. Giusto! Esatto!

Darling book to help one understand differences in size. Although, I am an adult, it makes the words come alive for me....and it has darling illustrations

I'm learning Italian like a child, using children's books. Why not? When I was a kid; that's how I learned to read English.

I am really happy with this book. It's creative and colorful. It's a good lesson for children on perspective. I enjoyed reading this as much as my son, great addition to our library.

This was a cute children's story in Italian with English translation. It's a great beginning step for children and even for adults who are learning to speak Italian.

I bought this book because I trust the author Robert Tisserand's experience. This book was written many years ago, yet it is stil useful and valuable resource today. It covers areas that I have not found in many books written today. The Art of Aromatherapy not only goes through a history of the use of essential oils through time. It also reminds us of how we used to use our sense of smell before technology took over medicine. Tisserand includes attributes of many oils as well as what they can help remedy. There is also a section that helps you figure out your dosing! I truly give this book a big 10, and recommend anyone who wants to learn more about aromatherapy than just putting what smells good in the diffuser to grab a copy. I have been interested in essential oils for a long time and finally started wanting to get a deeper understanding of oils and how to use them. After a lot of research I found Robert Tisserand who has been working in the field of aromatherapy for decades and can actually back up his claims with science. This book has been very helpful and is great for a beginner. I think it will also be a book that I will keep coming back to as it has information that will always be useful. Great book! Recommend it for anyone wanting to learn about essential oils and how to use them properly.

I'm not an expert on aromatherapy, so this is my point of view as an amateur.The book have some good facts and info about essential oils during different times in history. It also have many recipes. It separates a few oils in groups, depending if they are a base/middle or top, and in other groups like zodiac and planets.But it lacks on variety of essential oils. I know this is not a new book, so I was a little dissapointed to see only the "basic" ones. but in general this is a good and interesting book.

Robert Tisserand is the expert of essential oils. I have used his books as references over and over again. There is no fluff here. This is not really a beginner's book but it is full of great information you'll need as you grow and learn more about aromatherapy.

It's not a very user friendly guide. It lists oils but not a good reference for conditions and what to use. For s more experienced user

I'd been interested in aromatherapy for quite a while now, but I think this book really cemented it for me. It is incredibly comprehensive, offering all sorts of tips on using essential oils for everything from cosmetic/enjoyment to healing properties. The indices at the end are incredibly useful, including evaporation/volatility rates/tables, and information on odor intensity, and an incredibly extensive Theraputic Index. I lent this and a few other aromatherapy books to my little sister, who did a report on aromatherapy for a class, and this was the book she found most useful.

Any book by Robert Tisserand is going to be really good. A great price for a good book

This is a great book on aromatherapy. I've only had an opportunity to read a little bit, but look forward to finishing it. It provides a great deal of history and how different cultures had used aromatherapy. Shipment and delivery was great.

I consider myself a beginner even though I've been involved with photography for over 30 yrs.I'm one of those people you would call a natural;able to get good and sometimes great resultswithout having a clue of the technical aspects of photography. A few years ago I got myself a pentax K10D then a K20. Things went pretty well. Then I bought the pentax K-5. I actually got good photos with all three cameras as Pentax don't make no junk. As the cameras got more technically advanced (from the k10 to the k5) my knowledge of photography stayed pretty stagnant. Out of frustration I was determined to study and learn about photography so I could once and for all take my camera off the auto mode setting (green mode) and finally become a real photographer. Enter the Magic Lantern K7 Magic guide. Through research I discovered the K5 and the K7 are identical except for a few very minor differences.Operationally they are virtually the same camera. In just 2 to 3 says from studying the Magic Lantern K7 guide with camera in hand I was able to make great strides in learning and understanding how my K5 works and operate. In just a few short days I have become a much better photographer just buy understanding my Pentax K5 on a much deeper level. The Magic Lantern Guide made the difference. Some people might not like the repetitive nature of the book but it worked quite well for me. Each time around the author builds on the knowledge presented before. I recommend this book for learning the Pentax K5 mainly because there really isn't anything else out there for the K5. Pentax has made an exceptional camera in the K5 as well as theK7. If you need this book get this book. You won't be sorry.

I don't get the raving reviews. This book is nothing special. I bought it after upgrading to the K7, expecting to find it packed with *specific* tips and suggestions about the camera... "the best ISO is..." or "it really struggles with [issue] and you can mitigate that by doing [something unusual]," maybe.Instead, it's a verbose instruction manual that -really- reads like a cut-and-paste generated by a macro. You know, like it was pumped out by a template with mail-merge fields ready for whenever another model comes out: "The [model] by [manufacturer] has settings for shutter speed and aperture. 'Shutter speed' is...." This company must be way high up the list of "money made per effort expended" when it comes to publishing!It's fine if you've never read anything about photography. It's fine if you need something that uses color pictures and wayyyy too many words to re-explain what the manual already contains. But I won't be buying another copy with my next camera upgrade, and mostly regret buying this one.

After I opted to purchase the Pentax K-7 to be my first DSLR, I knew I needed more than the manual that comes with it as there are so many more features than I've had in any camera. I opted for this book after thorough research, including a review from a Photography professor on Amazon who gave it a huge thumbs up.It's so helpful to see color images over black and white. The book is well-written and definitely works WITH the manual. Burian does an excellent job of working with obvious as well as more obscure, but mighty, features built into my camera. Through this book, photographers of all levels can improve their skill levels.

When I bought my new K7, I was shocked to discover all of the features and options the camera had. Not like the old film cameras that's for sure! The owners manual briefly covered these features but left many things unexplained and offered no help for the amateur. This book filled the gaps, it explained how to use my camera in much greater detail. However, this book is not an instruction into photographic technique and does not offer any "secrets' that the pros use. For that I would recommend other books. Unfortunately when I upgraded to the K5 they had no magic lantern guide for that camera and they say they will not make one either. So, I kept this copy. The cameras are so similar that they probably don't need a different version, and considering the speed at which things change nowadays Pentax probably won't be making the K5 for much longer anyway.

Having upgraded from an older Pentax DSLR (*ist D), I struggled at first to come to terms with the new features on the K-7 (and there are a lot!). The approach that this book takes in familiarizing you with all of the cameras features is great, starting out with an easy 10 step guide to shooting then gradually introducing the reader to more advanced features. It's very well laid out and engaging, and I quickly found a lot of short cuts and features that I had missed initially or glossed over when I read the Pentax guide supplied with the camera. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone upgrading to the K-7 or just getting into the hobby.

A bare bones book with tiny pictures. No new information.

This is an excellent resource for a huge number of plants grown as bonsai. Valuable as a reference book, but could have pictures with finer resolution. The Kindle version allows for enlarging pictures, but they are invariable too fuzzy for a full size iPad screen. I recommend this book.
