I was a bit hesitant to get the book because folks panned it for being terribly out of date. Thing is it's not that bad even though it does address networks that are obsolete. History is good and what the book omits can be gathered through basic research. About the only gripe I have is it's a bit light on some aspects of communications but then again this book is an introduction to communication systems. I have only read through chapter 8. But as a "comm guy" I would say it covers the material fairly well.

Surprisingly relevant information despite being a few years dated.

easy read...and well organized although some of the concepts are quite intense

Although this textbook is required for the course I am taking, the reading is much easier than any other text I have read. A layman can read and understand this text. I would certainly recommend it!

It still talks about hubs in this book, which seems crazy to me. I haven't seen hubs in action in over 5 years. But then it somehow mentions brand-new technologies like Zigbee and 10G. It's all over the map and the editing is probably where it needs to be improved. Perhaps they just add material and never take any out.

Well it was a retired text book, it's nice to have in hardback. Probably the most boring text book ever but I learned a lot about servers, networks, wire types and all kinds of electrical and data components.

With the practice of medicine changing constantly, it was comforting to read this clearly written book by Dr. Allan Ropper, Harvard professor and clinical neurologist. This book is written so that the reader feels as though Dr. Ropper and his co-author, Professor Burrell are explaining the constant and delicate balancing act of being a good doctor as well as being a good human being. Yet,there is no sugar-coating here. Some of the cases are just heartbreaking, but this is not a work of fiction. I would highly recommend this book for everyone and anyone in the medical and allied health fields as well as to patients and the families of patients who have had more than a passing acquaintance with diseases of the brain...and God knows, there are many...patients as well as diseases. I am glad I was not the editor of this book since it, that is, the book, would have been double the size if I had. Those of us that have read "Reaching Down...." are already looking forward to Dr. Ropper's next book...especially those of us who have been down the proverbial "rabbit hole" or know someone who has.

I just finished reading this book. It took me more than a few days because I parsed it out to myself, wanting to make it last and wanting to savor its pieces. I especially wanted, or needed, to contemplate the juxtaposed stories of two ALS patients who chose such different paths for themselves. Granted, their experiences of the disease were very different, but still the skillful telling caused me to enter a contemplative state for several days, especially after the recently publicized and much debated case of a woman with terminal brain cancer choosing to "die with dignity" in Portland, Oregon, where there is a law protecting her right to do so. There are many stories that I found at once fascinating, heartrending, and reassuring. It is good to know that there are still practitioners like Dr. Ropper, with such great intellect and compassion, relying on the oldest and still most consistently relevant tools in the diagnostic toolbox: observing, questioning, listening, and learning and remembering. This is great story telling. It's about brains and muscles and bones, all with a medical and scientific backdrop...but in the beginning and in the end, it's about human beings, the ones who hurt and the ones who help.

Plenty in this book to satisfy anyone who appreciates medical facts. Accounts of various brain diseases, the effects of such on his patients and how treating and interacting with these patients shaped him into the distinguished doctor he became, is told from the personal perspective of Dr. Allan Ropper, a renowned neurologist. A great read, this book lays bare the brutality of life-changing or terminal illnesses which may be uncomfortable from some to read. Highly recommended, immensely interesting and informative. My only complaint is that the book has a last page! I wanted more.

This is a great book. But first, a disclaimer: I am a pediatrician, which means that, although I do not routinely deal with the diseases Dr. Ropper describes, I am familiar with them, the concepts and the language. Still, I am sure that non-health care providers would appreciate and learn from his book.Dr. Ropper is a brilliant and insightful clinician who is able to articulate the medical issues and thepsychological and ethical problems faced by physicians who think and care deeply about their patients.Early in the book, he makes some amazing diagnoses. While I was impressed, I was concerned that the book might consist of a string of self-congratulatory episodes. Not at all. Dr. Ropper freely admits to the limits of medical knowledge as well as his own. But most impressive is the long section which makes up the last part of the book, addressing the challenges to doctor, patient and family of dealing with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease). As a physician, what can I do that would be helpful to my patient facing a terminal illness? As a patient, what decisions would I make for myself? I found myself oscillating between the roles of physician and patient. The writing draws you in. In the end, I felt I had witnessed not only the workings of an astute medical mind, but also a highly sensitive, caring human being.

As a doctor in training, I used to follow Dr Ropper's scholarly papers, and has been always amused by the diversity of neurological illnesses he has written about and is an expert in. And now as a neurology post graduate resident, I jumped at this book as soon as it came out and then bought the kindle edition and most recently, got the audio-book as well. So, in effect, I have read this book three times already and still play a random chapter from the audiobook (mostly Chapter 7: A Story Is Worth A Thousand Pictures) when I am doing something mundane. Interestingly enough, after nearly 5 years into neurology/neurosciences, it took a book like this to tell me why I love this art and science. It's "the brain in its all messy glory" and the intrigue of the organ "that makes poetry", as Dr Ropper's book puts it. As a resident, I am increasingly asked by medical students interested in seeing what life is like, as a Neurologist, and I think I can confidently now recommend this book to those folks.

I am neither a med student nor an MD but I found this book very interesting and easy to read. I ordered this book after reading a review in the NYT titled "If House were a Neurologist". I even gave it as a gift to a House, MD fan.The book is a series of unusual neurological cases, like those on the TV show, but without the sarcasm. My only complaint is the Italian-American as Mafia stereotype. It shows how neurologists think and reason. In a way, it is somewhat philosophical. If you like medical non-fiction, buy this book. I recommend the ebook because of the vocabulary. Being able to touch a word and immediately have the definition is very useful.

A compilation of short paragraphical stories that aim to paint a larger picture. This feels like a 6 hour car ride with Carolla where he's behind the wheel, and in between songs he says "did I ever tell you about the time..." before he needs to pull into a truck stop and rushes to the end of the story before he parks. Reads a little start/stoppy, gas/breaky from paragraph to paragraph. That aside, Adam's stories are refreshingly honest and human. It read like a trip down a memory lane I was never apart of yet enjoyed.

This is less a book than a rambling meathead bildungsroman. It's frequently hilarious: Carolla takes shots at everyone, but his main target is always himself. Vulgarity and fart jokes (and worse) abound, but then this is a book by, for, and about men. Particularly, blue-collar white men, a demographic that doesn't get much attention from the media these days. The book sometimes reads like one long drunken bacchanal, but hey, that describes life for many guys between the ages of 18 and 30: crappy jobs, bad girlfriends, booze, and jackass friends.What makes this book stand out is not the comedic booze-and-drug hijinks, but Carolla's obvious dedication to rising above his circumstances and making something better of himself. He's the first to admit that many of his problems were self-inflicted, and that the first step in overcoming his poverty and lack of options was to change his way of thinking. All that stuff that struck you as fun and hilarious at 18 -- living in dumps, getting drunk every night -- seems pretty pathetic when you hit 30. Carolla seems to be saying, "Hey, if a meathead like me can do it, anyone can do it!" (Hence the title: he was actually turned down for a job at Taco Bell.)If you've listened to Carolla's podcasts, you'll know that he's on something of a crusade against the "participation trophy culture" that permeates the lives of young people. I think he intends this book as a contrarian view to the philosophy of "you're just fine the way you are!". His answer is that you're *not* fine the way you are, especially if you're doing crappy low-wage work and living a life devoid of roots or goals. Part of the book is a love-letter to Pop Warner football, and the sense of achievement and inclusion Carolla felt while playing the sport.His vulgar, hilarious stories will speak most profoundly to men, I think. Women may find them simply gross and unfunny anecdotes...and so they are (gross, that is; but often hilarious) up to a point. But they are also true stories that most guys can relate to: Carolla is just saying, "This is how guys act around each other." Carolla extols the vulgar joys of male friendship, and in this feminized age, that's refreshing. He sees nothing wrong with hanging out with friends on a weekend, drinking beer and farting and watching football games. He can be a "lowland ape", as can most men, but he's also an intelligent professional and a dedicated family man.Carolla's obvious fondness for his friends (particularly in light of what they've done to him, and he to them) may mystify many readers, particularly women. As Carolla describes his friends, they are barbarians, barely-civilized brutes. And so they probably were, once upon a time, as was Carolla himself. But it's hard to read this book and not come away thinking of your own friends and all their flaws: we often love people not just in spite of their flaws, but because of them. Sometimes our jackass friends grow up, sometimes they don't...and sometimes we liked them better before they "grew up".You can read this book as straight comedy (and properly, because there were times I was almost crying with laughter), but there's some deeper stuff there if you go looking for it. Having said that, I suspect that Carolla dictated the book rather than wrote it himself, because it has a fairly disjointed, discursive style. It's not necessarily a knock against the book because Carolla never claimed to be much of a writer, but the book does tend to meander a bit. (But then again: it's about Carolla's life, which itself meandered a bit.)

I had high hopes for this book because we enjoyed Carolla's home renovation show and his occasional appearances with O'Reilly. The book started off OK. It is cleverly organized around his series of homes (since his boyhood); that was interesting. In the early chapters, we were treated to Adam and his questionable pack of friends as they did more or less typical teen hi-jinks. I assumed that the book would proceed to slightly loftier stuff.Wrong! It dissolved into chapter after chapter of similar tales, almost all of which involved some combination of farting, vomiting, drunken binges, defecating on each other, etc. It really got boring. After all, how funny can the 28th incident of "lighting" a fart be??Frankly, whole thing was rather puerile. I finished the entire book on the assumption that it surely would get better. It didn't.

I was very critical of Carolla's previous publication, Rich Man, Poor Man. It was a dog. But the contrast made Not Taco Bell Material that much better.I loved Not Taco Bell Material. Ironically, the Taco Bell nearest my office is the one on Colfax and Magnolia in North Hollywood, kitty corner from Carolla's old high school.This is a great read. It chronicles Carolla's life from the viewpoint of the horrible homes he lived in. Just by themselves, these homes told the story pretty well. But adding in Carolla's accounts makes the whole thing that much more hilarious.As a frequent listener of his podcast, I thought this book would read like one long rerun. But even though there were a lot of familiar stories about things like Adam puking in the Tijuana ice maker, there was tons of new material. I thought I had heard all there was to hear about his best friend, Ray, but he filled an entire chapter with disgusting Ray stories.And one of the things that I truly marveled about was the way this played out in print. Adam is a spoken word guy. He's the first to admit that he was basically illiterate for most of his life, and writing a book by himself just wouldn't be possible. His dear friend, Mike Lynch, actually did all the writing. Adam would rant and Mike would put it all down on paper. I can't believe Lynch actually pulled it off. His writing was spectacular. It sounds just exactly like Adam, except it's not misspelled and he didn't have to type the whole thing in all caps.I give Adam big credit for not rehashing the material from his previous book (In Fifty Years We'll All Be Chicks). There were a lot of points where the two books crossed over, but he didn't retell the same old stories. Maybe it was to drive sales of his older book or maybe it was to save us from having to read the same stuff again in a second book, but he did a great job at stopping himself and referring the reader to the previous book.If you're a frequent listener, a lot of this content will be familiar. I pretty much agree with "CC from MD" -- except with one fewer stars. This is a collection of UB anecdotes; I don't think of UB as "east", in contrast with the far better book "Hearing Birds Fly" which is a more substantial book about a year's experiences in western Mongolia.200+ pages? Not really. Go to Amazon's "look inside" for the book and notice the larger font size than normal, the much wider margins than usual, and the line spacing. Maybe it's really about 100 pages. Not much there, and no real appreciation for Mongolians. You won't learn much from this book.

In all fairness, there are parts of this book where the author recounts her experiences traveling outside of Ulan Bataar, where she lived for two years. However, I found the majority of the book to consist of anecdotes about life in Ulan Bataar and the current state of Mongolian politics and history. If that is what you want, then I would recommend this book. It is written in an engaging style and very readable. However, I was looking for more of the "travels" promised in the title and came up short. I haven't found the perfect Mongolia travel narrative yet, but I can recommend as an alternate (or additional read), the book entitled "Hold the Dog: 16 Days in Mongolia"Hold the Dog!: 16 Days in Mongolia

What makes this book so interesting is that it doesn't fall into the cliched sterotypes of Mongolia most loved by foreignors. Mongolia in the 1990s underwent dramatic and painful social, political and economic changes. Those changes have ebbed from the collapse of the country's economy in the early 1990s (and the initial abandonment of the cities for the nomadic way of life), to the later collapse of the rural economy and the drift back towards the capital city, Ulaanbaatar. To make the claim that the capital doesn't reflect the 'real Mongolia' is not only arrogant, it is wrong. It is like saying Beijing doesn't relfect the 'real China'.The fact remains that the majority of the country's population lives in the capital. People have moved to the capital for the same reasons people gravitate to cities around the world: they seek opportunity and a chance to improve their lives. Wildeast engages with the ups and downs of this world; the shattered dreams and the wild fantasies: and it does use humour to do this. The country sits at the centre of the debates around globalisation and modernisation. It asks us to question what is development and who does it benefit.Its author edited the country's only independent English language newspaper - a newspaper whose majority staff are Mongolian. Few foreignors have seen Mongolia up close like this, or shared the confidences of its people.Ulaanbaatar has much to offer the visitor who opens their eyes. They will see a vibrant democratic political scene, nightlife teeming with young people and pop bands, an expanding restaurant scene, and a burgeoning business community. It is also a capital with shocking poverty surrounded by slums, and a nomadic way of life in crisis.It is the work of a journalist, but it is also the work of a writer who as a result of her role as a journalist, had unusual access to all aspects of Mongolian society, not just hanging out with herders on the steppe.I found the book to be a great read and it stands out in the crowded world of travel writing. It does not purport to be a guidebook (for that I would recommend Lonely Planet), but it does shine a light on all the facets of Mongolian life that most visitors to the country would otherwise find hard to penetrate in their short visit.

I found Lawless's book of Mongolia both funny and insightful. It makes you want to travel and experience life and it definitely makes you remember to stop and smell the `roses'.Not normally a reader of travel books, this one was a gift from a very dear friend. Now this is one of my favorite gifts for giving.I hope she writes more, I thouroughly enjoy her wit and style.

I prefer to read a travel book that provides helpful information on destinations without too much personal bias. To my disappointment, I find plenty in this book that shows the author's close-mindedness and the lack of respect for local hospitality and culture. One example, when the author describes the Mongolian hospitality and the cheese that they offered him, his comments in the book were "...Who first discovered that you could make from milk a dried curd with the consistency of rock and the smell of vomit - and then eat it?". I wouldn't mind realistic descriptions of the places and things, but I find the author's attitude less appealing.

Really nicely written and interesting book about Mongolia. Definitely worth a read if you are planning a trip. Not so much as preparation but to give you an idea of what the country and it's people are like.

I found Jill Lawless' Wild East to be an unusual work of travel writing. She did not just make a pit stop in Mongolia, but lived there for two years as editor of the UB Post newspaper -- a feisty English language newspaper. This is a work in the tradition of the great engaged journalists, a ballsy (without the balls) Hemmingway for the 21st century. Her writing is wise, minus the naive first impressions of many travellers -- it is Mongolia from the inside. Wild East is a reality check on current debates over globalization. Mongolia is a country where even McDonalds dares to not go. Lawless digs deep into the country's own version of the 60s, as Mongolian's lustily embraced there new-found freedoms in the 90s. She takes us across the country, from the remote Gobi desert, to border clashes with Russian Tuva. She is especially good at covering the dynamic and chaotic world of Mongolian tabloid newspapers, including the rise and fall of "Hot Blanket" magazine.

Everything From "Moby Dick" And "Great Expectation's" To The Complete Work's Of Louis L'Amour! I Dont Claim To Be A Critic, But This Is A Good Book, Very Compelling And Well Worth Reading! And I Dont Just Say That Because She's My Sister But Because It Is A Good Book!

Well I am Jeans daughter, And I can remember many of nights she sat up thinking and reseaching her work for this book, I can remember reading broken chapters and thinking can she ever finish this thing...Or trying to talk to her and her not relizing..I now know that it was worth everything she put into it..Its a very wonderful and touching book...Now its done and I can read the whole thing, instead fo just parts..
