About the Author

Sir Max Hastings was a foreign correspondent for many years, reporting from more than 60 countries for BBC TV and the London Evening Standard. He reported conflict in the Middle East, Indochina, Angola, India, Zimbabwe and finally the 1982 Falklands War. He has presented historical documentaries for television, including series on the Korean War and on Churchill and his generals. He is the recipient of numerous British awards for his books and journalism, including Journalist of the Year (1982), and Editor of the Year (1988). He has written 18 books on military history and current events. Some notables are Bomber Command, which earned the Somerset Maugham Prize for nonfiction, The Battle for the Falklands, Overlord: D-Day and the Battle for Normandy, both of which also received awards. For 16 years, he was successively editor-in-chief of the British Daily Telegraph and Evening Standard, from which he retired in 2002. He has published two memoirs, Going To The Wars (2000) about his experiences as a war correspondent, and Editor (2003) about his time running newspapers. He lives outside London.

If you have read other books by Max Hastings, then you know what to expect here. If not, then know that Hastings does two things in his books: he avoids detailing every event so that he can explain *why* things happened the way they did; and then he gives his brutal opinion.As with all of Hastings' books, you should have some background knowledge on the topic before you read it. He breezes through a lot of events and assumes you know enough to keep up. He then delves into the events and other factors that explain what was happening. He will present the opinions of various historians, but more often than not, he will shoot down those opinions and explain why he disagrees. His opinionated writing is fascinating for the historian and has become a bit of his trademark.In this book, he outlines the fall of the Japanese empire, from Midway to Burma, with primary emphasis on the final year of the war. He gives equal weight to all theaters of the Pacific, rather than just focusing on MacArthur or Nimitz. He tries his hand at explaining the Japanese war mentality that is so foreign to the Western mind. He also finishes the book with a condemnation of Japan for never having fully repudiated their wartime behavior in the way that Germany has.Overall, this is a thorough and fascinating account of the end of the war in the Pacific. But again, make sure you have solid background in ALL areas of the war against Japan before you read this.

Max Hastings is just about the best WW2 historian writing today. As in his other masterpiece, "Inferno" (the best single volume history of the war), Hastings pulls no punches and is even-handed in his commentaries. For example, he makes it clear that the British Burma campaign had no strategic value whatsoever in terms of defeating Japan, but was only a final bloody exercise to try to restore a dying British empire. Tragically, thousands of Britons (and Indians) had to die for this fantasy. Similarly, Hastings makes it clear that MacArthur's obsession to restore American control over all of the Philippines, instead of just taking the ports and airfields that would have been useful to a later invasion of Japan, led to the unnecessary deaths of thousands of Americans and Filipino civilians. Hastings is unhesitant about exposing in graphic terms the genocidal crimes committed by the Japanese against other Asians whose countries they occupied, especially the Chinese and Filipinos. Hastings neither excuses nor condemns the horrors inflicted on the Japanese people in the final months of the war; rather, he explains the context in which those horrors occurred.

Max Hastings, with extraordinary detail and historical accuracy, captures and conveys Japan's last devastating year of WWII. It had to imagine the countless hours upon hours of research that went into this book. My father flew B-29s from Saipan. I learned so much about that 'chapter' of the war. I compared dates of bombing campaigns with my father's papers and discovered events I could never have learned about otherwise. It helped me understand what my father and hundreds of other brave flyers went throug on those long, dangerous flights to Japan and back. I wish my father was still alive as I have so many questions now. He offers a thorough history lesson and I look forward to his other books about the war.

Author Max Hastings has delivered a very concise and overwhelming account of the Pacific war; although focused on the last two years of the war in the Pacific, he has managed to meld into this work the lead up to war in the Pacific and also inject how the Sino-Japanese war in China was eventually played out.Using a fantastic amount of resource materiel the author has captured every aspect of the war in the Pacific from the attack at Pearl Harbour to the signing of the surrender at Tokyo Bay aboard the USS Missouri. Also the conflict between General MacAthur and Admiral King on driving across the central Pacific or coming up through the Philippines to approach the Japanese home islands. The book also looks deeply at the decision to use the atomic bombs to hasten the end of the war and the Soviet invasion of Manchuria.I was drawn to this book as it is very descriptive and contrasts the world of the most senior commanders of both sides with that of ordinary service personnel; for example the absolute despair of Japanese soldiers at the end of the major Pacific island battles as they attempted to sneak into newly won areas and steal food and water, to the desperation of sailors torpedoed in mid-Pacific who floundered in the water for sometimes days as sharks took their comrades and others around them went insane from thirst and sun.The author has captured the essence of the Pacific war from its initial confused and very tumultuous beginnings to the very concerted and massive attacks towards the end. He takes the reader on a journey of many fronts with experiences from private soldier to supreme commander and examines how through blood, torrential rain and rolling oceans swells, the war in the Pacific developed from a massive front of many thousands of kilometres down to the focused destruction of Japan and its home islands.In summary an extremely well researched and definitive account of the Pacific war, that gives explanation of how the early years of war in the Pacific evolved into a highly technological and very focused end game. For any student or reader who has an interest in the Pacific war, this book is not to be passed up. Well done, Max Hastings!

Easy to understand tutorials for embroidery. it does have a lot of needlepoint tutorials, but I'm not interested in needlepoint. I'd prefer if the book were just about embroidery stitching, but that just me...😊

I have myriad needlework books but this is one I turn to consistently to add freshness to my stitching. It's one of the very best stitch guides I own...among dozens.Since some reviewers seemed not sure what stitches the book included, here are the chapters:Intro, Materials, Tools & TechniquesGallery of Stitches...p. 22 [shows every stitch in the book with the page to find its diagrams]Line and Border Stitches...p. 36 [e.g. back, stem, split and chain stitches]Filling Stitches...p. 70 [e.g. small repeated stitches to make a "powdered"--filled--area]Openwork Stitches...p. 94 [i.e. pulled fabric, drawn thread, cutwork, insertion and edging stitches]Needlepoint stitches...p. 116 to 156--the largest chapter. [e.g. straight and diagonal, cross and star, looped and tied stitches]I used the excellent directions on hem stitching to design a short course for my Embroiderers' Guild of America group. Lucinda's secret is to use bright colored yarn on wide gauge fabric so you can see where the needle goes. And she shows where the working needle is in every diagram. The average stitch in all hand embroidery entails probably 4 or 5 separate steps; most books only show 2 and then the finished product. Here, the author shows ALL the steps in each stitch including that all-important "how do I begin the second stitch?" The only stitch I can quibble with is the bullion knot, my go-to stitch to evaluate a stitch guide. While I have books that show 5 and even 7 steps, this one only having 3 steps is sufficient because of the close-ups and because the explanation smooths over any lack of diagramming. So this exceptional book is the exception to the rule.To be able to learn stitches quickly and easily makes me feel accomplished instead of frustrated. Take the fear out of learning new stitches and check out this book.

I really like this book and how it is catalogued. The diagrams can be confusing so you really have to read the steps, for me it's just another thing I don't want to do but it's okay, the book is really thorough!!I would recommend it because of the amount of stitches the book has in it and the thoroughness of the instructions. The few that confused me I just googled and found a bit more info online to help me understand what I was looking at. Overall, not that many really.

The book arrived in two days. It was exactly what I was expecting. The various stitches are explained well with good diagrams.

This book is geared more towards the plastic canvas stitcher but it definitely contains a whole lot of stitches. I was looking for more embroidery stitches so I wasn't as excited about this book as I would have been otherwise. It is a beautifully done book for the right application. It just wasn't what I expected.

Illustrations are in black and white. I did not investigate enough. Didn't think I had to.

I love the book! It has a wide variety of ideas and how-to’s

I do a lot of freehand embroidery on my projects and this book gives great tutorials with full dolor photographs to guide you on different types of stitches and how they are supposed to look. I can't wait to try some of the ones I never had before!

I enjoyed reading this book but it was not what I expected or wanted. The author talks a lot about her personal experiences with drawing and there are lots of her drawings and sketches all through the book. It’s the story of her personal journey as an artist and I think if you are an artist yourself, you’ll really love this.However, although the book is supposed to be a “non-artist’s guide,” I didn’t feel it really was directed at me. It focuses more on inspiring you to make drawing part of your daily life than on how to draw. Although there is a chapter on supplies and one on basic techniques, it’s really not a “how-to” book. I think this book is really geared for someone who at least has some basic artistic knowledge and ability. There is a long alphabetical list of prompts but if you don’t know HOW to draw, all the ideas of WHAT to draw won’t do you much good.Basically, if you are looking for inspiration and motivation, you’ll probably love this book. If you’re looking for help in learning how to draw, go elsewhere.

This book was exactly what I needed. I'm learning to draw through books and online videos and this one is a real winner. It won't teach you how to draw, but maybe more importantly gives you the encouragement to draw.The author explains many problems and challenges she has faced when drawing - discouragement at the end result, no time, mistakes, and general artistic frustration. Then she explains what she has done to overcome each of those barriers. The insouciant attitude of "just draw" is what helped me the most. On a long phone call? just draw! Standing in line at the bank? just draw! Our for a walk? just draw!It's the activity of drawing, not the end product of a drawing, that makes it fun. And the more you draw the more fun you have.That's the message of this book, and it got through to me. I'd bet it will do the same for you.

 I was quite excited when I knew that France Belleville-Van Stone was coming up with a book. I follow her blog where she posts her drawings from daily life, be it sketches from the living room, backs of her colleagues during a meeting, cars, shoes, or her cat Peaches. I like the style of her pen and ink drawings, and just her art in general.The book Sketch! is a 134-page paperback with rounded corners. The pages are designed to look like textured paper, and her encouraging text and beautiful drawings are printed on them. It's a nice presentation.This book gives us a personal account of her artistic journey and a peek into her creative process. It's one where she shares about her drawing experience, and in finding time to draw. This is more like a book on ideas rather than techniques. The inspiration comes from reading through her personal experiences.She talks about the drawing supplies that she uses, basic techniques in brief, what and where to draw when time is limited, drawing digital on the tablet (she uses iPad), and finally a list of subjects to draw listed alphabetically. If you follow her art blog, this book is like the behind-the-scenes guidebook to what she does, topics I wished were written on her blog but weren't.I find it inspiring that she can find time to draw even when she's a busy mum and French teacher -- I always imagined she teaches art because of all her drawings. She gives helpful tips and suggestions on what you can draw with limited time, on handling expectations and dealing with the excuses that you might give yourself for not drawing enough. As someone who likes to draw, I could relate to many of the issues mentioned.It's a motivating and inspiring book. Recommended to sketchers and artists.(See more pictures of the book on my blog. Just received this book and I love it! I've been drawing and painting for 30+ years and yes, I already know a lot of the content but the author has a wonderful way with words, she makes the topic fun and enjoyable, no dry academic slog here. Also lots of information on up-to-date current supplies, like water brushes and the best available sketchbooks for every type of drawing. I'm looking forward to the chapter on computer/tablet apps and best digital drawing apps. Even though drawing and sketching is an old subject this book brings it to life in today's world. Her drawings/illustrations are wonderful and inspirational too. I highy recommend this book for artists of every level.

Absolutely loved France Belleville-Van Stone's "Sketch!: The Non-Artist's Guide to Inspiration, Technique, and Drawing Daily Life," as it completely delivered on the title's promise. Now this is not a 'how to sketch' book in the traditional sense. Beyond the obligatory discussion on material choice (which was refreshingly non-dogmatic, by the way), the focus here is more subtle and nuanced. It was not until nearly the end that I realized that Ms. Belleville-Van Stone's journey is really the story of my journey (and the journey of many others, I suspect)--a burning desire to create coupled with the need to balance life's other activities and commitments, and still make art. Even in very small increments. I think that is what I found so inspirational--knowing that it's okay if you can only steal five minutes away out of your hectic day for a quick drawing that seems disjointed from the last quick drawing done in your 'cheap' sketchbook. Over time, the narrative of your work emerges (and your skill increases).If you are looking for a more structured approach to incorporating a sketching habit into your daily life, there may be better books to get you there. However, if you are interested in how one woman has grown her art over time, with all of life's challenges and distractions, and feel you can apply the lessons learned to your own situation, I would highly recommend this book.

I love this book. It is so valuable to Black people, and Black girls and women in particular, simply because there is so much internalized tension between us and our hair. I am nowhere near finished, but I felt a strong urge to write a review now, because only moments earlier I broke down into tears from what I read of this book. I broke down because I'm not even halfway through, but it has already painted a clear picture of the sick irony that is white supremacy. That is, the fact that White people can edge out Black people from their own creations made to combat white supremacy; sell the same products to Black people to perpetuate self-hate and white supremacy; and in the same breath, tell Black people that they are lazy racists when they try to regroup from white supremacy. This book is written rather matter-of-factly, but the contents are very raw, and they hit home. Beautiful work.

Originally I expected this book to be a bit shallow. I thought, "170+ pages about hair, yeah, right." But I was wrong. I was able to see the physiological damage that not only happened to me but virtually every other person in America with tightly coiled hair. I've been transitioning for about 6 months after about 25 years of having relaxed hair. I had already faced the sad truth that I had spent most of my life hating a part of me, being ashamed of my hair texture and further ashamed of the damage and thinning that came from relaxers. After reading this book, I saw that the damage to my mind had gone further that I could have ever imagined. I realized that our whole society is plagued with this false notion of straight, blonde, and shiny equaling success, wholesomeness, and all things good, while nappy, black, and matte is associated with the direct opposite. I have learned to enjoy my hair all the more through reading this book. I have a better understanding of our history, and how the negative connotation regarding the African heritage has all but obliterated the self-esteem of countless individuals. I consider this a must read for anyone but especially preteen African American women. This book could have spared me much pain in my teen & early adult years.I now think what if it was opposite. What if at the first sign of straight, blonde hair a mother took her five-year-old to the salon, told her that something was wrong with her fine textured tress, that she looked like a wet cat? What if that mother paid to have that child's hair permed in tiny perm rods & told her she had to keep putting caustic chemicals in her hair for the rest of her life so that she can be accepted, get a job, or a husband. That mother would be considered abusive. But many children in American receive this treatment every day, and instead of abuse, it's considered normal, fashionable or simply just the way things are.

I have spent an entire life trying to educate Black women on the fact that their hair is beautiful. Making the choice to change the texture is a personal one. However, I hope that Black women don't make the choice as a correction to their hair texture. There is too much self-hate in that. The point being natural Black hair is beautiful and should not be shame filled. Natural is the essence of who we are. I love my natural hair. [...]

I absolutely LOVE this book. I learned so much from it and it has inspired me to start reading more. The authors do a great job of recounting the history of blacks and our hair. I would highly recommend this book. It's a great read and will take you no time to get through it. Once you complete the book I'm sure you'll have a greater respect for the legacy of our ancestors and their struggles

This is a PHEONOMAL BOOK. Every person of African origin should have a copy in their personal library. It was very inspirational to find out that West Africans have and had LONG HAIR. It was so enlightening to know that 4a, 4b, and 4c hair can be managed but requires tender lover and care. Astounding is all I can say. This book also bought healing to me. I now have learned to appreaciate my kinky coiled hair and love it. Hair Story taught me that my kinky coiled hair is a LEGACY. This legacy was passed down as result of our ancestors learning to adapt to a new culture and environment and learning to survive "12-15 hour days in intense heat with a diet that consisted of no more than dried cornbread smeared with pork grease accompanied by a side of overcooked vegetables that lacked nutrients." What more can I say. I could read this book at least three more times and definitely find something that I missed before.

I absolutely love this book! It gives the history of Black hair in one book.The words and pictures were carefully chosen to convey the messages intended. After reading this book, my appreciation for our hair is even greater because I now understand the reasons why our hair has been evaluated, tested, scrutinized, devalued, and even glorified.The authors did an excellent job at compiling the facts to ensure that after reading this book, the reader has a healthy objective perspective of black hair, it's history, and the African American journey in America.👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

Learning one step at a time doesn't work. This book will tell you which figure precedes or follows a given figure.

Modern Ballroom Dancing: All the Steps You Need to Get You Dancing is an accurate title for a great little book. A dancer who studies and practices what this offers will indeed be dancing soon. It is good for steps but needs follow up with a coach for body positioning to help make the dancing more comfortable.

I purchased this book to compliment my dance instruction. Being that I take lessons in Japan, I needed a book, in English, which would reinforce and further explain what was being taught to me in class. I have found it a very useful book. However, this is not a book for a beginning dancer! The explanations and footwork patterns are detailed, but if you have no experience with ballroom dancing, the figures and explanations will mean very little to you.Some of the more complicated steps do not have foot diagrams, which would have been helpful. All and all, an excellent book!

This is a good book to summarize all steps for many popular dances. My only problem is it does not have step graph for every steps. Only about half of them are illustrated. One step graph wins thousands of words.

I have both the Victor Silvester book and Alex Moore's ISTD ballroom manual. I personally find the ISTD manual more compact, and a lot better organized. It is a little more expensive than Silvester, and it also has no pictures, but it is much more useful in my opinion.The Victor Silvester book is a ballroom instructor's manual with pictures, and the reader's understanding of the material will be exponentially proportional to his prior experience. That is, the beginners will not find it useful at all, while the intermediate and advanced dancers will be able to learn quite a bit from it. The pictures and figures are more like eye candy, as they are taken from dance competitions. They are not used to illustrate the steps.Although the book covers all ballroom steps from beginner to gold, it doesn't tell you which one is which. Also, it only covers up to latin bronze steps, and does not explain essential concepts such as Cuban motion and samba bounce. Unlike the other manuals, the Victor Silvester book also go over the basic steps for Viennese Waltz and (huh huh ...) disco. These steps are fairly basic. If the user are already at the level at which he can learn from the book, I doubt these steps would be too challenging.Also, a word of warning for the prospective dancers. I have seen (and met) a lot of people who try to learn from the book directly, only to be discouraged by the less than desirable results. What a lot of these books won't tell you, or at least convey effectively, are the fundamental aspects of partnered dancing, such as posture, communication, movement, and body connections. These aspects have to be taught and shown by a qualified instructor, because these points can't simply be put in words and are fundamental to all partnered dancing.

This is a pretty good book for anyone who's currently taking lessons in International-style dancing. It goes through all 10 dances used in International Rhythm and Smooth competition. The author presents about 12 or more variations in each dance. There are foot diagrams for about half the variations. He details the footwork (written), contrary body movement, timing, sway and amount of turn. All of the photos are of competitors at a dance event so they're not helpful if you're trying to learn how any figure looks. I don't think it's a book to buy if you're starting to learn how to dance but if you're already taking lessons, it's a good book to reinforce what you're learning. American-style is not covered at all.

I've been ballroom dancing for quite a while, and I bought this book in order to learn some more dance steps over and beyond the basics. I found the descriptions and diagrams IMPOSSIBLE to understand, and the steps I could figure out ended up being out of place among the steps that I usually dance. I think this book is only good if you're a dance teacher who is used to reading steps in a certain format and can translate them into motion. If you're a beginner, this book will do you NO GOOD!

MODERN BALLROOM DANCING has been valuable to me in improving my skills in those dances with which I was already familiar. The usefulness seemed to have been in direct proportion to what I knew before reading the book. It has not been very helpful in learning new dances.The text includes several dazzling photos of competitive dancers in action.
