The Symposium is what it is: a classic of western culture. So, when one offers a review, it's not about the text itself (I think) but for the translation, presentation and notes. So: Wakefield's translation is the smoothest I've read of this great text. His modern English makes the homoerotic context of the dialogue clear, for one thing. I've taught this text to sleepy undergrads who were clueless about the terms "lover" and "beloved" in the speeches, assuming they were about a boy and a girl. But the notes are where Wakefield really shines. Wakefield gives not only a readable account of each of the speeches, a special discussion of love in Greek thought, and a literary analysis, but also a useful set of notes at the end. Over all, this is so much better than the tired British translations we used to read in college back in the old days.

In this review I will compare 5 translations of Plato's Symposium:1. Alexander Nehamas & Paul Woodruff (Hackett Pub Co, 1989).2. Benardete (University of Chicago Press, 2001).3. R.E. Allen (Yale University Press, 1993).4. Shelley's Translation (St Augustine Press, 2002)5. Sharon (Focus Publishing/R.Pullins Co, 1997)I have given all translations 5 stars for their own unique perspectives. Each of these editions has its own strengths and weaknesses, and because of this, none of this edition is complete in itself. Inevitably, if you are serious in undertaking this work, you need to pick up more than one edition. I will give a recommendation on which one to use, at the end of this review.Symposium consists of a series of speeches on love (Eros), culminating in Socrates' and then Alcibiades'. What I am looking for is, first, ease of understanding the central concept of the book, this is obtained through different types of translations. My bias is toward a translation that is fluid, natural, and conveys the concept in a straight forward way. Second, I am also looking for helpful insights and philosophical explanations of some key thoughts. You get this from the quality of commentary/notes as part of the book.Both Sharon's and Nehamas' editions are similar in their lucid, straightforward, and current translations. I find that these 2 editions to be the best and easiest in understanding the text. On the translation side, I give these 5 stars. However, the commentaries in both editions are basic, and unsatisfying in my mind. For this, I give 4 stars.Benardete's edition has a superb commentaries both written by him and another (which is the gem here) written by Allan Bloom. You may or may not like Bloom's style, but he does give you a lot of background especially in ancient Greek pederasty culture, and valuable insights in each of the speeches. I give this a 5 star. I will recommend buying this book just for those 2 commentaries. On the translation itself, however, I am not a fan of Benardete's style. I have commented this in other reviews for his other translations, especially the "Sophist". For some reason, I find it more complex, long winded, and harder to understand. For this I give this edition translation 4 stars only.Allen's edition is superb for both translation and commentaries; this is a 5 star book for me.Finally, on Shelley's translation: this is a unique edition for a couple of reasons. It is a translation of a masterpiece work, by a master in literature himself, Percy Shelley. So, you are reading not only Plato's works, but also a work by one of the most influential literary figure in the English world. Secondly, there is an extensive commentary by David O'Connor, not only on the Symposium, but also on Shelley's process and motivation of doing the translation. A superb edition.My final recommendation: pick up either Sharon or Nehamas' book (personally I prefer Sharon's, it is beautifully done) for the translation, and then pick up Stanley Rosen's "Plato's Symposium" for the commentary (I have a separate review for this superb book). However, if you must read 1 and only 1 book, I would stay with Allen's.

Hackett Publishing puts out the preeminent translations/versions of the classics. The introductions, footnotes and line references allow for thorough reading/engrossment of the texts. I have a large collection of Hackett books and I was not disappointed by this one. Whether you are taking a class or reading on your own turn to these texts over other versions. You will NOT be disappointed. I recommend this book (version) without reservation.

The one start is for this particular edition not for the book itself. The edition does not have numbered paragraphs. I need this book for a class, and we need paragraph numbers to properly cite the text in essays. It was a complete waste of time for me to read this edition and make notes in it, and then have to look at another edition to get the paragraph numbers for citation purposes. When my professor referred to certain passages of the text in class, I could not follow along. My professor says that this usually happens when students get their books from Amazon instead of the editions she picked out that are on shelf of the campus bookstore! Regrettable mistake on my part.

With this I read the Hackett edition and I was pleased with it. Unlike many of their other Plato editions, this one had a decent amount of footnotes and a great introduction, with an easy to read translation.I knew beforehand that this book contained dialogues about Euros, but I didn't realize that with many of the dialogues the love is referring to pederasty, I should have guessed from some of the interactions with other Plato dialogues. To someone like myself from a different time and culture this was slightly disturbing at first, but once I got past my own opinions, this was actually a great dialogue. I did wonder how this dialogue was so well copied throughout the Catholic middle ages, one would think that it would get swept under the rug like so many other documents, but perhaps because its Socrates or just because its good, it got a pass. I think its among the best of the Plato dialogues I've read, it seems more lively and entertaining than some of the others.In this, men at a symposium sit around making speeches in praise of love. I don't remember the first ones very well, but the later ones were pretty good. I liked the popular one by Aristophanes where he tells of a love creation type of myth were people at one time had double the body parts but were separated into two by a god, then they search for their other half. I think my favorite part though happened at the end where Alcibiades comes in drunk and tells stories about Socrates, it gives another dimension to the man and made me appreciate him more (his apology was even more effective when I read it after this).

This course covers a basic overview of Greek Mythology and is taught by Elizabeth Vandiver.I liked that this course covered the gods and some of the demigods as well. I also liked that she discussed the what vs why of myth. I find Professor Vandiver to be an enthusiastic teacher and very easy to listen to. Thirty minutes per lecture was just the right amount of time. I have since listened to other great courses by her and found her summaries of those topics to be as interesting as this one.

Never have an English major talk about mythology.... yuck!

Dr. Vandiver does a good job explaining classical mythology. This is a "deep" lecture, at least in my opinion. She doesn't spend quite as much time as I would have liked discussing individual myth. Instead she delves into the meanings behind the myths. An understanding of Greek/Roman culture is required to understand these meanings and I believe Dr. Vandiver provides the background that is needed. She can be a little dry at times, but, having spent a lot of time in college classrooms, I had no problem with her delivery. Interesting and informative. Plan on buying some of her other lectures.

Good overview of Classical Mythology. I'm enjoying re-listening to the tapes. I would recommend this as an introduction for someone who would like to begin to have a better understanding of mythology.

Very informative and easy to follow. More than I had expected for the money. The lectures not only covered the well know myths but explained how they may have become myths.

Very engaging lectures, and an excellent introduction to her other courses (Iliad, Odyssey, and Aeneid), and Greek study in general. Furthermore, this series is rich in its references to the works and theories of other scholars, which is helpful if you are interested enough to do further research. One caveat, however, is that this series dissects, rather than narrates Greek myth, and is rather heavy on, in Prof. Vandiver's own terms, the structural and psychological side. It is more interested in what modern readers can learn and understand of ancient Greece THROUGH Greek myth, which is, by her own admission, a little shaky. If you listen to other lectures given by historians or archaeologists who use different evidence and materials, it's not surprising that they may understand an institution, or interpret a phenomenon, in vastly different ways.

I like a book with strong female lead and sexy, strong male characters. Body of Evidence delivers. Dr. Marissa Frasier and Colby Agency investigator Lacon Traynor are exactly that. The type of characters you hope you can keep reading about in future books. I like Debra Webbs style ofwriting.Dr. Frasier, Issy, wakes up to find her ex-husband lying dead next to her. After threatening to kill her the night before he has been murdered in her bed. Knowing someone came into her home, violated her space and shot him right next to her without her hearing terrifies her. She is a light sleeper how could this happen? She hires Colby Agency and they send Lancor Traynor, a highly skilled investigator and protection expert from Texas. It is a bit distracting staying in the safe house with such a viral strong handsome man wearing cowboy boots. Her life as a doctor and her pain after her divorce left her little time or desire to date. When they find out the mob is involved she is shocked. What her ex-husband could have been involved in and why are they now after her terrifies her. Lancor and Issy need to clear her name. Not knowing who on the police force they can trust not to be in the mob bosses pocket. Issy is spunky and let's the mob boss know she won't be pushed around. Knowing she can be makes Lancor very determined to solve this as fast as possible to keep them both alive.

"Body of Evidence" follows Dr. Marissa (Issy) Frasier as she is first confronted by her abusive ex-husband and then framed for his murder- and targeted by the mob. Luckily, she knows someone at the hospital who has enlisted the help of the Colby Agency for her. Lacon Traynor swoops in to help her after she discovers the body of her ex-husband in her bed and sticks by her side from then forward.Marissa is pulled into even bigger plots than she could have imagined, by the head of organized crime- Vito Anastasia. He has decided Marissa is the woman he wants to work for him as a lover and a physician. As Anastasia controls people in powerful places, Marissa is left able to trust only one person- Lacon- and luckily, he will not let her out of his sight. Together, they try to work with the police and stay alive, even when everything seems to be conspiring against them.Overall, it's a solid romantic suspense. I felt like I didn't really get into the mindset of the major characters, particularly Lacon and Anastasia. The motives didn't always feel readily apparent and so I had a hard time getting into the thriller aspects of the book. In terms of the romance, it takes a backseat to the main plot, but when it is brought to the forefront, it's done pretty well. The flow of the book is great, and it's a pretty fast read- I read it in an afternoon easily! I never felt lost in the plot, though I did wish I had more insight into Lacon and Anastasia to really get into it more.Please note that I received an ARC from the publisher through netgalley. All opinions are my own.

In my oppinion (speaking as a Muslim who has a hobby of looking at different Koran/Qur'an translations), this is the best one for obtaining an introductory understanding of the linguistic nuances and subtle allusions that is out there. Cleary presents a translation of the Koran by explaining linguistic concepts and not doctrine or theology. His elimination of the Masculine gender for God (by replacing it with the name God), however, while being unique, sometimes disrupts the flow of a few passages of the text.Overall, I am completely satisfied with this earlier translation of the Koran (his later translation, while complete, has no ilucidating or explicating comments), making this the primary edition.Below are a couple excerpts (from the introduction and from the Chapter entitled "Light" [along with its accompanying notes]), for the interested reader."One particular problem in rendering the Qur'an into English is presented by the numerous intensive forms used to refer to attributes of God. There are different forms of intensification in Arabic, with different ways of interpreting or describing even one form. In this English version, general, encompassing terms of intensity are used, with the provision that these expressions are intended to function as points from which the consciousness of the reader is to launch upwards toward contemplation of supernal ideals. The purpose, in other words, is not to represent God in human terms but to use human language as a means of directing the eye of contemplation toward the inexpressible infinity of the spiritual and metaphysical realities symbolized by language.In stringing these verses together in a rosary for recitation, for the most part I have followed the Arabic original in division of verses. I begin my selection from the famous Light Verse, one of the most prized of all passages from the Qur'an. The earlier verses of this chapter deal with social mores, including themes of chastity, privacy, modesty, and keeping innocent of vicious gossip.36 "in houses which God has allowed to be raised": The word "raised" may be understood in the concrete sense of "set up," meaning houses of devotion built especially for constant remembrance of God; and the abstract sense of "elevate," meaning houses ennobled by constant remembrance of God.37 "people who are not diverted": Some take this to refer to people who leave off worldly occupations to devote themselves completely to remembrance of God; others take it to refer to people whose worldly occupations do not distract them from constant and complete devotion to God.39 "their works are like a mirage on a plain": Works emanating from human folly are based on subjective considerations and thus ultimately prove objectively insubstantial.40 "or like the darknesses": This again refers to the works of ingrates who refuse to acknowledge the source of all being. The ocean is their consciousness, the darknesses are layers of ignorance, the waves are impulsive imaginings, the waves upon waves are rationalizations of their imaginings, the clouds are biases and blind spots."if one stretched forth a hand, one would hardly see it": The ignorance and blindness of the ungrateful not only hinders them from acknowledging the ultimate end, it veils them from the truth of what is near at hand."whoever God gives no light has no light at all": All true knowledge is from Truth: subjective human imagination has no connection with ultimate reality."

Read this for a Philosophies of Religion class and read the whole thing, easy ride and nicely insightful.

Cleary has done a quite a few "essential" translations of sacred texts and this is just one in the series. It's titled, "The Essential Koran" because Cleary focuses on the spirit of the book and leaves out much of the narrations on jurisprudence. It's the passages that are central to the creed of the faith and are most memorized and recited by adherents that are reflected in this collection. Considering that I've gone through at least 12 copies of this book over the last 10 years, I probably should have drafted a review when I received my first copy. Every so often I'll look at my library and find that I've given away my last copy and I'll inevitably order a few more copies.So, why do I love sharing this book with people? Aside from that which is mentioned above, it's eloquently written and easy to read for those who are cannot read & understand the classical Arabic Qur'an. At about 200 pages long, it's not as intimidating as the full translation. It's just enough text for those who are unfamiliar with the Qur'an to give one a clear and precise vision of the original in a succinct, yet nuanced manner. Readers looking for the real 'meat and potatoes' of the Qur'an and those with an interest in linguistics will find it particularly appealing.Cleary addresses this in the introduction:". . . The Qur'an is extremely dense and extraordinarily intense. The present collection of readings from the Qur'an is simply designed to help non-Muslim Westerners approach this sacred book and savor something of its literally amazing power and grace through a selection of chapters and verses encapsulating some of the central ideas and essential beauties of the Book."This translation is meant to be a recitation. Cleary's full translation of the Qur'an is titled, "The Qur'an: A New Translation" and that is truly a masterpiece.Take the 1-2 star reviews with a grain of salt; they seem to be ramblings of those who have a xenophobic attitude towards Muslims or Islam itself. The translation itself is sound and an essential addition to one's library. For those starting to delve into the one of the most revered sacred texts in history, this is a fine introduction.

Here, Cleary successfully captures the lyrical, lilting, poetic prose of the Arabic language that has served to spiritually lift the emotions and minds of the readers of the Koran. Cleary explains the main reason why Arabic an present complex ideas and emotions.

Good and easy to read translation of the Quran

I bought this wonderful little volume for a class on Islam. It was very helpful for learning with Muslims both Clerics and Layperson as guest lecturers.

However, it is so good I am Buying the hard copy. It is a MUST HAVE if you are in the Instruction Design space, and a good to have if you are an Educator. I am a Masters in ED student and have struggled with the concept of ID due to the peer-reviewed mumbo jumbo we are given to read. I am so grateful I searched for information to clarify the concept and happened upon this book. I have recommended it to everyone in my class. She starts with the overall history in an easy to understand, great manner. She then provides laymen’s view descriptions of each model. The test your knowledge is excellent to help you as a self-regulated learner ensure you grasp the concept. I could go on and on about how this single book allowed from to go from a C- student to an A student by giving me the keys needed to really comprehend, transfer knowledge, and remain engaged in the concept of Instructional Design. No more shot-in-the-dark tweaking! This book is an absolute essential for any home sewer. I probably resisted it longer than I should have because "everybody" says it's so great... how many books are that good? Well, this one's a revolution. Upped my sewing/fitting game exponentially--and this from someone who's been sewing for many decades. Put it together with Fit for Real People, also by Pati Palmer and Marta Alto, and Claire Shaeffer's Couture Sewing Techniques, and you'll wonder why you ever buy ready-to-wear.

I have made my own clothes, pants included, for most of my life. Although I have several books on fitting, this is among the best of them. Marta goes into great detail in pin fitting both the pattern and the cloth garment. One thing I wish she had touched on is how the garments fit the models in positions other than standing up. A garment that is fitted to a standing model, may or may not feel comfortable when the model is sitting or squatting. The Palmer Pletsch method of fitting clothing has been around, tested, revised and tested again. The models in the book are not pencil thin, tall perfectly proportioned professional models, but ordinary women, both young and mature, whose bodies have a variety of shapes and fitting challenges. I find this a very helpful fitting aid.

I am a teach-myself-to-sew person as I do not have any person or educational center near me to help me out. And there is so much information out there on sewing! But I find most of it is geared towards more skilled levels or more generic information. I had decided to stick to one type of garment to develop my skills with; decided on pants, since I am hard to fit in that area, and bounced all over the place to find information. I was pleased, after much searching, to find this easy to follow book on pattern alteration for pants. Once I master my pants, I plan to use their other books to increase my skills in other areas.

I absolutely love this book and method. It clarified the adjustment process to use on patterns to make clothes fit me better. I this method, in conjunction with the slide method in "Pattern Fitting with Confidence" on a pair of shorts that made the pattern adjustment easy and flawless. This book made me realize that a lot of women are not within the industry "standard" but that we can still have pants that fit us both comfortably and beautifully! I would highly recommend purchasing this book if you have a body shape that is not the "standard" shape. I can't wait to make more beautiful clothes that actually fit me comfortably!

Very helpful. May still want to cross reference (because there are usually more ways than one to accomplish something), but this book is VERY informative. I've started customizing commercial patterns following these instructions.... they work!

This book was invaluable in trying to get a basic sloper to fit. I highly recommend.

This book is amazing. Well written, well illustrated, best alterations. Every fit problem is addressed. I have dozens of books and this series, are by far my favorite! If you wonder why garments sewn from patterns fit funny, get this book for Pants or Fit for Real People for tops and skirts.
