Devoured the whole book over the weekend, and it was wonderful. I live under a rock and wasn’t real familiar with Franchesca Ramsey's work (though as I read, I realized I had seen and loved some of her videos when I'd come across them over the years). She's become a favorite after this book.While I haven't experienced sudden YouTube celebrity status, it was interesting and easy to imagine her experience, suddenly having an audience of people looking to her to say something and not always getting it right and then facing various types of online shitstorms. Many of us have dealt with a much smaller version of that if we've been willing to have real and not easy conversations about racism and other issues.It was so refreshing to hear her very honest and real experiences and kind of nod along at descriptions of interactions on social media and also hear solid advice of how to engage (or not engage at that time and place, maybe take it private - something I've found helpful to do but rarely see talked about as much, so it was nice to see). There's even a handy flowchart of when to unfriend someone who has said something racist or otherwise not cool - it's not always so cut and dry (relationship, situation, various factors). I appreciated the amount of realistic nuance the author included on topics like this along with the reminder to keep the focus on the issues being discussed and not to devolve into less helpful name-calling, attacking appearance, etc.This was such an enjoyable read because the author has such a great sense of humor and willingness to share her own missteps and explain concepts in such a detailed and accessible way.If you are involved at all in social justice conversations in real life or online or just want to know some good places to start learning more (especially the concepts explained in the back), this book is an excellent resource.

I may be a little biased because I've followed Franchesca for years but I absolutely loved this book. She's one of the hardest working people in the biz so I'm so happy for her to be writing a book!This book is so wonderfully introspective and I don't think most people in the public eye are as analytical as she is. As someone who has followed her, I hadn't quite realized that she made these transitions but reflecting back, I realize that they have been distinct stages in her public image.I love all the teaching moments in the book too, especially about calling in vs calling out. I definitely do the latter and will be practicing doing more of the former. It's stuff like this that is why I read books. It's completely changed my perspective on the goal of public discussion on race or LGBT issues.If you like the dissection of social justice issues and how to effect change, I highly recommend this book.

I discovered Franchesca a few years ago from some of her videos that came right after "S*** White Girls Say to Black Girls". She's super inspiring for her willingness to be vulnerable about her career path and her mistakes, and that says a lot for a girl who's part of an online media movement that already trends towards oversharing. That vulnerability is the biggest strength of Franchesca's writing. Not every joke written on these pages lands, but the sincerity and wisdom absolutely do.Between her encounters with viral stardom and some surprisingly cringe-worthy confrontations with problematic celebrities, there are lots of great suggestions about addressing social issues within your family and friend groups, a breakdown of the dark origins of innocent words and a handy glossary that add up to a memoir that doubles as a social justice on the web 101 course. If you're familiar with these topics already, there might not be a lot more you'll end up learning, but when combined with one woman's adventures in learning and embracing activism herself, I could take away things I could work on myself.(And follow @chescaleigh online! Super enjoyable memoir. Franchesca doesn't shy away from any of the mistakes (or good steps!) she's taken along her personal path towards social activism. Her writing style is snappy and at times funny (when appropriate). I really enjoyed her look into the Internet's roll in both sending her to #fame and then to being #trolled (and being A Hater for a while) and how all of that rolls into learning from mistakes to be a better activist. It wasn't just a fun and interesting biography; it was a really nice call to action. Highly recommend.

Anyone that has been diagnosed with this, knows those VERY basic things. But I expected to see, try eating Ginger as it really helps settle the stomach. I wanted to hear about natural remedies that could be used at home to resolve this.Eczema - Identify and avoid triggers, apply anti-itch cream, avoid scratching, use mild soaps and moisturize skin, use a humidifier......Again anyone that has this diagnosis knows these very basic things. A dermatologist would clearly say to take warm, but not hot shower, and to put a cream on while your skin is still moist....There are a FEW things that do list supplements or something that you can do to help. You may see drink tea or take B vitamins or something sprinkled here and there but overall this book doesn't really offer anything unique.

For example, I twisted my ankle not too long ago and then subsequently hurt my back. What a waste this book should say Mayo's book of common sense that any moron should know because I learned nothing I didn't know. They're using the Mayo name to scam sales.

As other reviewers have mentioned (and no, I didn't read these reviews before ordering the book, sadly), this is full of everyday, commonly known remedies. It's a nice book, but I was expecting some new information. All of this is available on Google OR from your mom!

The book reminds me of remedies that you might have gotten from a grandmother. Not a problem but it would have been nice if there was a little more technical detail behind some of the explanations. Had to buy the Mayo Clinic Family Health Book to get that extra info. The book does include fixes for some of the most common problems and suggests when you need to seek medical help if certain symptoms are there.Mostly I needed to purchase since I only have internet access at work and kids usually get sick at 3:00am.

Nowhere near enough info, especially considering it's coming from the Mayo Clinic.

I got this book along with the "alternative medicine", it was amazing all we are learning from this book, if you don't have much time to go to the doctor or you just simply don't like to go, this is a great alternative way to help you to be healthier. All the advice and tips in the book are very helpful.

I was disappointed because I expected more in depth details regarding the remedies. Most of the remedies I already knew about from reading other books, but I thought that because the title of the book was "Mayo Clinic," it would have more information. Oh well

It covers the basics, compass rose, intermediate directions, scale, title, longitude and lattitude, hemispheres, symbols etc... Overall good book for kids who don't know anything about maps and how to read them. I teach special ed and you can't just photocopy and throw down on the kids desk. You have to teach and explain each concept in furthur detail. But the kids definitely come away with a better understanding on how to read maps when your done with the book. I would use this for 5th grade special ed and up.

I have used Levels B-E of this workbook. I would recommend them for classroom or homeschool use. The book contains nicely colored maps and illustrations and builds a solid foundation in reading maps.

It is a good book I will use it to reinforce skills that I feel my low readers will need.

Starred Review. Grade 1-5–This elegant picture book recounts a legend involving the painter Han Gan, who lived in China 1200 years ago. Though he came from a poor family, his talent was recognized early and he won acceptance to the academy for official painters. The young man loved to draw horses, and he always drew them tethered, as he warned, my horses are so alive they might leap right off the paper. One night, a great warrior visited him and asked him to bring to life a valiant steed. The artist was frustrated with his attempt, but as he tried to destroy the painting in the fire, the horse came to life and rode away with the warrior on its back. The great horse did not need to eat, drink, or sleep, and was invincible in battle, until it took pity on its vanquished foes. The steed threw off its rider and returned to be part of a painting on the wall of Han Gan's home. The tale is crisply and concisely told. The double-page illustrations are dominated by strong browns, blacks, and reds, and are painted directly on silk in the style of Han Gan. The oversize art underscores the tale's drama and epic scale with plenty of period detail, balanced with large open areas. From a Western perspective, we may discount Chinese classical painting as being too stylized and one-dimensional, the faces of the people without expression, and the lines on the page flat. It is the same experience that we have when we view art from 12th-century. We shrug without any real enjoyment, accepting the artist's work with the thought, "Well, that's just the way it was back then. They had limited tools."Chen Jiang Hong's work here tries to undo all of those prejudices, suggesting that Han Gan's work, whom he imitates here, was controversial in its day for its realism. Just as 13th-century European artists fought hard for a more realistic style, Han Gan's work sought a true imitation of reality, which, as the fable tells us, could be confused with reality.Han Gan's creation, a horse that could be ridden by the most demanding soldier-warrior, also has emotion and intellect, enough so, that he ultimately makes the choice to live in the imagined world of the painter rather than the world of suffering created by the warrior class.Thanks to the perfection of the illustrations and the inherited wisdom packed into the fable, the book truly works on many levels.The book can be enjoyed by three-year-olds, like my daughter, but, I'd like to think that I enjoyed it much more.Like a coffee-table book of beautiful pictures, "Han Gan" can be enjoyed many times over.

Expensive buy but great condition.

This is written for children,or those interested in ancient Chinese art. The illustrations are plentiful and very colorfull.The drawing of a magic horse is taken from an ancient painting and could be of interest to any one interested in art.

A beautifully illustrated fold tale based on paintings from an actual artist named Han Gan who lived in China over 1,200 years ago. His paintings were almost always horses and imaginative. The author who is classically trained painted the illustrations on silk just like Han Gan. In the story the painter is approached by a warrior to create a life-like might horse in a painting and bring it to life. The horse is everything the warrior wished for and together they win many battles. The horse is saddened by all the destruction though and runs back to the painter to live in his paintings once again.

Okay, Chinese traditionalists, here is your book.Chen trained at Beijing's Academy of Fine Arts and has dedicated his career to relating the history and traditions of his ancestral home. He even painted the illustrations directly onto silk to emulate the story's subject, a painter who lived 1,200 years ago but whose lifelike renderings of horses are still celebrated today.Han Gan's family was too poor to indulge his love of drawing, until a wealthy artist discovered his talent and bought him paper, inks and brushes. He excelled at horses; the only humans in his art are riding or tending the magnificent steeds he creates. They may've been a little too lifelike: one day, a warrior comes to him with an unusual request.From there, the story takes a fabulist turn, with a subtle message infused with Chinese wisdom. Chen's prose is lean and understated, giving us just enough to fuel the imagination, while the illustrations really stoke the fire.The plain silk backgrounds and flattened perspective help us keep our focus on the important figures, with white-clad Han Gan seeming small next to the busy aristocrats hobnobbing over tea or those fine, muscular equines who prance and chomp at the bit. He's the only one in white, however, which immediately draws our eye to him.The way inks bleed into the silk affects the way robes seem to drape and adds texture to a nighttime sky. Chen's palette is muted, with subtle grays, greens and beige, except for great streaks of angry crimson used on walls to create a sense of enclosure, or on war gear to add excitement, and even in a red sunset as the din of battle loses its allure.As your eye follows those reds, you'll notice crimson serves a practical purpose: the compositions are off-center, with figures spreading unevenly across the picture plane. The spot use of crimson ties everything together, creating symmetry and harmony out of chaos.Gorgeous stuff, and a great introduction to the Chinese aesthetic from a purist.

When a great warrior approaches Han to paint a valiant and spirited war horse for him to ride into battle, the resulting horse is much more than either the warrior or Han himself could have imagined.The real Han Gan lived 1,200 years ago, and loved to paint horses. I was very dissatisfied with the condition of this book when I received it. The book's condition was very poor - contrary to the description given. I paid a lot of money for this book and expected it to be in very good condition as mentioned in it's description. I warn you to be very careful when purchasing from WAREHOUSE DEALS, INC.

My son says he loves this book--and that speaks volumes. He is 16 years old and is enrolled in an Auto Technology course. He is also home schooled, and I chose this as his math text for the year. He says that he can see how he will use every problem that he has tried in the book. I have a library copy, and plan to purchase one for him based on his feedback.

the book was not as informative as I thought. Did receive book in a timely mananer.
