A really engaging book, even if you know nothing about climbing. I got the book after meeting the author, Hans Florine, and read his book in a day. It explains many of the specifications of a climb without being overly technical (or boring) and draws the reader in to the complexities of becoming a world class climber. It's an awe inspiring treatise on what goes into a climb as massive as The Nose as well as an illuminating insight into what drives a person to continually challenge themselves to improve on what they've done. Highly recommend.

Hans is both a legend in the climbing community and a genuinely great guy who is always as excited about the goals and achievements of others as much as his own. I have done the NIAD 4 times myself--about a hundred less times than he has! Early one morning, he passed me and my partner on pitch 3, and gave us a very helpful little tip about a delicate, tricky sequence just above us. My first thought was: he really does have this entire 3000 foot cliff memorized! Having done this climb myself more than once, I have to say that I find it almost inconceivable that anyone has climbed this iconic and beautiful wall as many times as Hans Florine. I was excited to get this book and have found it absolutely gripping reading. Most adventure climbing is of interest only to practitioners of the activity depicted, but this wonderful book is almost like a novel in the way it develops a plot filled with engaging characters and fine detail. The main character is, of course, El Capitan, that stunning wall of flawless granite at the entrance to Yosemite Valley. The other main character is Hans--but this is a love story, not a tale of conflict. Hans and the wall are not enemies; they're more like very close friends. Climbers will love it, but non-climbers will also be thrilled by the great storytelling which strikes the perfect balance between clarifying technical terms for non-experts and not talking down to experienced climbers. From the very revealing narrative of Florine's first attempt on the Nose--which did not go at all as planned--to detailed accounts of his blistering speed records (he climbs the Nose faster than all but Olympians run the marathon!), the story will not let you put it down. Beautifully written, well-paced, and loaded with great anecdotes from his numerous ascents with many famous climbers, this is a must-read for anyone who loves adventure writing. El Capitan is the ultimate cliff in the world's most amazing valley, and the Nose, while not the hardest route on the wall, is perhaps the greatest climbing line in the world. On the Nose is a great book. It is well written, inspiring, and thoroughly engaging – a definite page-turner. The book’s chapters detail some of Florine’s more noteworthy ascents of the Nose and are filled with funny anecdotes and interesting back stories. Despite being a world-class athlete and climbing legend, Hans is incredibly inclusive of climbers of all abilities and clearly gets a lot of joy introducing people to climbing the Nose (he has done the route with 87 different people, young and old, experienced and inexperienced). On the Nose is both entertaining and very motivating – you will finish it with increased enthusiasm to achieve your own personal goals.

I received this book and immediately started reading it. I found myself absorbed in the story pretty quickly and didn't want to put it down. The stories of Hans' early days and early ascents of the Nose were a great foundation for the later success he would have on the Nose. He appears to be quite obsessed with the Nose, but I have to think that's a pretty healthy obsession. I encourage anyone who has any interest in climbing, Yosemite and especially the Nose on El Capitan to pick this book up. I'm confident you'll love it.

About the Author

C.M. Wang is a Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the National University of Singapore (NUS). He received his Ph.D. degree from Monash University in 1982. Currently, he is the Director for the Engineering Science Programme, at NUS. He is also an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering, Monash University, Australia. He is a Chartered Structural Engineer, a Fellow of the Academy of Engineering Singapore, a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers Singapore and a Fellow of the Institution of Structural Engineers. He is presently the Chairman of the IStructE Singapore Regional Group. Prof. Wang’s research interests are in the areas of structural stability, vibration, optimization, nanostructures and very large floating structures. He is listed in Thomson Reuters’ Highly Cited Researcher under the Engineering category.B.T. Wang holds a Master of Public Policy and Management and a Bachelor of Architecture with Honours. He was a Public Transport Authority CEO Scholar and has been a Project Manager with the Infrastructure Delivery team within the State Government of Western Australia. Having worked across a number of sectors including Rail, Defence and Correctional Services, his projects have received awards such as the Master Builders Excellence in Construction Award and National Sustainability Award. He is currently undertaking the Master of Laws (Juris Doctor) programme at Monash University where he serves on the Law Review Editorial Committee. His research interests lie in Infrastructure and Major Projects as acts of positioning the city within a global arena and Ocean Space Colonisation and Technologies. Perfect for learning typing the old-fashioned way - a spiral bound book, with lots of practice in a sensible order. It teaches the home row first, then top row, then bottom row. The other advantage is you are NOT looking at the screen while typing, (I recommend putting a piece of cardboard over the screen while typing so you don't cheat). Then you really memorize the locations of the keys. Both of my homeschooled kids learned with this book around age 11 and they can touch-type perfectly now. Such a useful life skill. I used a $2 plastic brochure holder from the office supply store to hold it upright.We tried all the learn-to-type online programs but they were all too cutesy, or too distracting with their games and pressure to go fast. If you have a child who wants a game for reinforcement I recommend the games on Typing.com. But not the learning lessons. This book is much better.

I first got this book out of the library and was impressed with how easy it was to use. I could type a little but not touch-typing. When I stuck to it, my touch-typing improved dramatically. I have never taken typing lessons and being middle-aged, was afraid I'd never be any good at typing, let alone touch-typing. The author teaches you not only typing but about the keyboard, the best way to sit while typing and other useful information. I especially like how you must look at the book to do the lessons, rather than the screen. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn how to touch-type.

This has been great for teaching my sons how to type. I have them type one page a day and within a couple months they went from not knowing at all how to type to typing about 30 wpm.

I just ordered my 8 year olds first laptop. When I seen this book it took me back to the days when I was in school and how they use to teach us in typing class. I find the print a bit small in this book but definitely workable. It is spiral bound and will stand beside the computer while typing. As for being able to tell when a mistake is made, if this book is being used with a computer, the word processing system will most likely show when a mistake is made.The delivery time was outstanding from Trinity City Books.

I bought this book as a textbook for my kayaking class. The author is very thorough, explaining everything you would need to know for sea kayaking, including proper paddling techniques, rolls, rescues, even detailing useful provisions for kayaking trips, what to look for when buying a new kayak, and how to predict and be prepared for various weather conditions. The book has tons of diagrams to help with the explanations. You could become a skilled kayaker by just following the directions in this book. He covers everything. It can get a little bit dry at times, so I wouldn't say i "love" it, but it is very good quality.

I have really enjoyed sea kayaking. My first instructor recommended this book and it has been great. Simple tips that have helped me have a more efficient stroke.

BUY THIS BOOK !!I love this book, Derek is funny and incredibly informative. I originally got it at the library and read it over and over and over, and then finally bought it and read it again. Learn something new every time.....If you are going to get one book on kayaking, this is it!

Pros: A very detailed and technical section on strokes. Enjoyable reading.Cons: Dated. Much information specific to "British" kayaking. Not a single mention of how to tie a knot. Many nautical terms not defined.

Great for me. I like cords above the right hand. I have given up reading the left hand and just play cords.

The other reviewer (Rob) clearly doesn't understand the concept of a fake book. This book, as he said, has the lyrics, guitar chords and melody line--that's the definition of a "fake book"--fake books are designed for you to improv. They are not supposed to have full orchestrations or harmony lines. The whole term "fake book" comes from the old saying, "If you hum a few bars I can fake it." Most praise bands and worship teams use either this kind of "fake sheet" or they use "charts," which don't even include the melody line--just the lyrics with the chord changes above them.So, having said that, I can confidently assure you that this series of Christian fake books published by Hal Leonard is very good and an excellent value. Each book has a plethora of songs in a wide range of tempo, styles and genres. Definitely worth many times the asking price for the musician who plays by chords or improv. Definitely NOT for people who only know how to play from sheet music. If the latter describes you, steer clear, for you will surely be disappointed. You don't want a fake book. If, however, you fall into the former category, you can't go wrong here!

This book it great. I am in my third year of private piano lessons and I am able to read this book and follow along. Some of the songs are challenging but I can handle them ok
