Very clear and concise information. I like that he has you reread certain paragraphs knowing repetition will help it stick. I definitely recognized many of the behaviors he talks about, but I never realized exactly what those behaviors meant. My intuition knew what was going on, but I allowed myself to remain confused. Now I have a better understanding. Glad I read it and will likely read it again... You know, so it sticks.

I really enjoyed this book. Bruce Bryans is the next best thing to having a wise older brother who, with the best interests of his sister in mind, takes the time to truly explain dating from the man's perspective. I wish I had been able to read this book when I was young woman, it would have saved me a lot of heartache and wasted years of my life. This is a guidebook which I'll be reading again, to remind me to keep my head on straight while navigating the dating world.

This book is amazing I'm entering the dating scene again and need to brush up on some things it's been a longgggg time!!!And i'm sure the rules are different now so it's always a good thing to brush up on your skillz! I have the Robin Buss translation of THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO in paperback, but that copy was old and worn. I wanted a more durable hardcover edition to read and to display on my bookshelf in my new house. The hardcover I bought from Total Books arrived in near-perfect condition, exactly as advertised, and looks gorgeous on the shelf.Why Robin Buss' translation for Penguin Classics? That's a reasonable question since Alexandre Dumas has been dead long enough for his works to enter the public domain. Several translations of his major novels are not only available in cheaper editions (such as Barnes & Noble Classics), but for free on Project Gutenberg.These are inferior and, in the case of THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO, censored translations. Most of them date back to the Victorian period, and render Dumas' evergreen French into English prose that feels old-fashioned and stilted today. Furthermore, because these are translations from the Victorian period, the translators filtered Dumas through their own moral sensibilities to give us Bowdlerized versions of a novel that ran on sex, drugs, and rock 'n roll a century before rock 'n roll was something you could do without a machine gun.Robin Buss' unabridged translation comes directly from the original French and renders Dumas into fresh, readable modern English. Material previously omitted by Victorian-era translators such as Franz' hashish-fueled sexual fantasies and the strongly implied lesbian relationship between Eugenie and Louise remain intact and uncensored. As another reviewer pointed out, Buss will provide footnotes to explain subtleties that aren't easily translated from French to English, such as insults delivered by using the formal you (vous) rather than the informal/friendly/intimate you (tu).A detailed appendix provides valuable historical and cultural context that aids the reader in understanding Dumas' masterpiece, and includes a primer on the rise, fall, return, and final downfall of Napoleon Bonaparte that is crucial to making sense of the politics driving the novel's plot.If you cannot read Dumas in his native French, and you want a definitive English version, Robin Buss's unabridged and uncensored modern English translation is essential reading. This is my favorite novel, a story not only of persecution and vengeance, but of man's relation to his God and how it drives, inspires and interferes with his judgements. Often adapted to film, nobody has captured the depth of Dumas' perceptions and understanding of people, largely because filmmakers focus on the excellently-told action rather the true essence of the story. This is one man's battle against himself, beautifully articulated egardless of which translation from French you choose to read. If you've not read Dumas before, be aware that he sets up his characters and circumstances, creating mysteries, then departs from his main story line to pursue secondary characters. All the threads pull together by the end of the story, but through at least a third of the book, Edmund Dantes is only peripherally present. Don't be discouraged - it's worth the wait, as the resolution is one of the most moving I've encountered in literature. A brilliant book by one of history's most original writers and creators of great heroes.

I love this book. It is a masterpiece of writing and I wanted a copy I could read any time I wanted. However, the Kindle edition has so many errors that it is unreadable. Every page has words running together, and it makes for a huge headache to get through even 2 pages. I couldn't read it due to these issues. I'm very glad I only spent $1.99 on it, but I wish I had spent nothing. A very poorly edited kindle edition.

Alexandre Dumas’ famous novel The Count of Monte Cristo has seen life not only in print but in film and television, but one cannot appreciate the novel unless you read it in its entire unabridged length.Edmond Dantes is wrongfully accused of a crime and thrown in prison without trial to be forgotten, after overcoming both mental and physical anguish and befriending a fellow prisoner, and finally he is able to escape. Thanks to his friendship Dantes knows where a potential hidden treasure is located and finds it to be real, and using it begins finding out why he was thrown into prison and chart is path to revenge through fortune and hidden identities. Yet what this quick synopsis omits is the numerous and fascinating major and secondary characters that Dantes interacts throughout the narrative.Originally published in serial form, Dumas was paid for how much he wrote and one would think that The Count of Monte Cristo might be riddled with meandering subplots that never go anywhere and/or have nothing to do with the central plot. But Dumas instead wove a tapestry of beauty with every word he wrote; instead of making meandering plots he described scenes and events in rich detail that it brings the story even more alive in the reader’s imagination.If pressed to find anything negative to say about this book, the easiest answer would be cultural references that are almost 170 years old. The only other negative was the completely different societal norms that were in Parisian society in the 1840s compared today’s. However both of these ‘negatives’ can easily be put down to a piece of fiction that was contemporary when it was written but now can be seen as historical fiction with the passage to time.The Count of Monte Cristo needs to be read in all its unabridged glory to fully appreciate why it is a masterpiece and classic. Dumas’ literary tapestry is a delight to behold once finished with the last page and makes the reader think about when they’ll have time to reread it in the future.

My kid says he likes to read, but this book was the only one he read in one sitting. The characters are quite relatable and the dialogue has the pacing of witty kid banter. I appreciate books with a sportsmanship theme. In the story, Connor puts tremendous internal pressure on himself to be perfect at the sport. His trials, particularly his internal dialogue, were great for discussing with my own hothead. It is clear that this book is written from a place of love and wisdom for the game of baseball and the kids who relish playing it.

My son loves all the baseball books he can get his hands on! He is 10 years old and will read for hours every night.

this book was really funny and good. cal ripken jr did amazing on the book. I strongly reccomend to anyone who likes baseball and humor. He blew the book out of the park (baseball pun). The worst part of the whole book was when you finish hothead.

book was just as advertised, perfect quality, actual content was heavy on the history portion with lots of filler text, and not as scientific/gemology centric as I would have hoped, but this is still great for getting to know how to identify turquoise, product from different mines, and avoiding fakes.

Mark Walhimer’s company, Museum Planning, LLC, specializes in the planning, design, and management of interactive educational experiences. Walhimer started his firm in 1999 to assist startup and expanding museums with exhibition design, art handling, project management, fabrication, and installation. He has completed more than 40 projects worldwide for an international clientele that includes science centers, art museums, history museums, libraries, and corporations. Projects include “Alcatraz: Life on the Rock,” a traveling exhibition that opened on Ellis Island in October 2011 and the Trans Studio Science Center opened summer 2012 in Bandung, Indonesia. Prior to starting his company, Walhimer held positions at Discovery Science Center in Santa Ana, California; the Children's Museum ofIndianapolis; and Liberty Science Center. Walhimer has a bachelor’s degree in studio art from Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, New York, and a master’s degree in industrial design and exhibition design from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York.

After over 30 years in museums and often teaching on museums we finally have a readable yet complete text for students. Mark Walhimer covers all the essential themes for beginners in museum studies within a series of short and very readable chapters. Added materials and handouts are included for student use which helps students get connected to the profession. I appreciated the emphasis on mission and ethics expected from practitioners. I will use it for my next museum class. The content is very current yet the mission of our profession is clearly defended to a new practitioners.

Museums 101 is a great place to start for anyone interested in learning how museums operate. The book is well organized and methodical in its approach. It is easy to read, offering many examples that cover different types of museums, ranging from large to small, historical, visual, scientific and live. The book seems especially geared toward readers who intend to start new museums, and includes a reference section, Museum Toolbox. There is also a useful website associated with the book that allows the reader to explore chapter topics in greater depth.

I really love this book, and appreciate the depth of knowledge that the author Mark Walhimer put into it. Mr. Walhimer clearly is a devotee of the world of museums, putting in lots of website addresses and names of institutions with locations. The book is laid out very well by chapter and subject headings. It carefully covers important details. As I read the book, I felt as though the author was sitting nearby speaking to me because it's written in layman's easy-going terminology. For me, this book is one that needs to be read straight through, then gone over once or twice to allow for follow-up to all the suggestions and advice. Museums 101 is a textbook suitable for educating oneself and it's an upbeat manual, not boring at all. I actually couldn't put it down until I went through it cover to cover, and I'm now on the 3rd reading so as to utilize the links and look up websites listed inside.

I don't write reviews typically, but I purchased this book in Kindle form to use as a resource in setting up a nonprofit museum. I had an issue with accessing the accompanying online resources, and sent a email not expecting a response for at least a day or two. Much to my surprise, Mark himself emailed me back within a half hour and made sure everything was accessible for me! A+ for customer service! Overall the book is a great read and a valuable resource and I would definitely recommend it!

I recently have been incredibly inspired to start a museum. Of all of the materials I have found in my online and book research, Mark’s book has absolutely been the most helpful in terms of giving me specific things to work on in creating my museum. He also gives a great background of the workings of a museum, the behind the scenes of successful museums. I highly recommend this book for any and all interested in learning more about museums!

Running a specialised museum in regional Australia, we use books and online resources as our main source of information and inspiration. Museum's 101 gave us both. It is divided into small, easy to read chunks of valuable information. Being written by an author on the other side of the world we wondered if it would have enough relevance to us, but our Custodian has been a subscriber to Mark's blog for some years now and found it valuable, so we gave it a go. Very pretty patterns. Too many 'useless' pages though. I thought the entire book was filled with coloring pages. It is about half, the other half is pages about how to color, etc. etc.

Many of the pages are already partially or fully colored. The style reminds me of wallpaper--the same design from top to bottom of the page. Not very interesting, and not useful to me. The cover looks more interesting than what's inside.

Beautiful Beautiful picture following the beautiful patterns on her purses. So glad to get the wonderful illustrations to try to follow or try my own way. It will be challenging as well as fun.
