My children love this book! They are never tired of the story. Great illustrations. The only suggestion is that it could be more sturdy. I brought several copies for my nieces and nephews. A great book!

Great short story to read aloud to introduce folktales!

I loved this story growing up, having heard it in a few different versions from my mom or others, and is only reason why this review isn't one-starred. When I saw this book at the library, naturally I got excited and opened it. The first thing I noticed were the terrible illustrations. It was basically a character on an almost blank sheet with no background. It was ugly, to put it plainly. I felt like I was reading some 5th grader's collage assignment that was carelessly done in 5 minutes. An adventure story about talking animals confronting Heaven's injustice and THIS is what they come up with for the illustrations? Seriously?My other issue with the story is that it is told differently, weakly. Differences are to be expected and even welcomed in the retellings of a classic story, but not if they don't make sense. Frog's companions are supposed to have definite strengths and weaknesses that counter everything Heaven throws at them. In this version of the story, the animals have no developed strengths nor weaknesses so that the final confrontation has no wittiness about it. No rhyme no reason, the animals just kinda fight and suddenly: The End. The writing style is very dry. -__-This book butchered everything I like about this story.

It was a legend unlike any other legends and had been passes down by generations. Every time that the people received rain, they remember the story about the toad which had said to be the uncle of heaven. A little ugly toad and dare to become uncle of anyone even the heaven ? How is this happened ? It was a long time ago and there is a drought in the land. The field become dry, every trees died, the animals had nothing to eat or drink for there is not a shingle drop of water. For days, the animals groan and complain but no one would do anything. This is when Toad step in and make up his mind to go to heaven and asked heaven the reason why... enough with me telling how it ended. Read this wonderful book and find out. You won't regret it and every time you see rain, you will know how it all happen.

It was spring of 1948, and a young man from Pennsylvania had to work out of his psyche the sights, sounds, and losses of World War II; he took a hike. For four months. On August 5 of that year, Earl Victor Shaffer became the first person to solo-hike uninterrupted the entire length of the Appalachian Trail, from Springer Mountain in Georgia through 13 other states to Katahdin in the central-Maine wilderness...on more than 2,000 miles of footpath created in the 1920s and '30s by volunteers and maintained by volunteers ever since. Earl Shaffer, a woodsman, naturalist, and poet who still lives close to the Trail, went on to become one of those volunteers as a leader of the Appalachian Trail Conference as it worked to secure federal protection for 'the A.T.,' now a unit of the national park system but still volunteer-managed. Written soon after the first of his two thru-hikes and including photographs from 1948, Walking with Spring chronicles Shaffer's adventures along a path that at the time was showing neglect of the war years and has since been rerouted significantly to its permanent locations. Earl V. Shaffer (1919-2002) was the first person to report a single-season hike of the whole Appalachian Trail, in 1948, walking of the war. He hiked it again in 1965 and 1998. He lived a modest life in central Pennsylvania, often writing poetry.

Enjoyed reading this book, because of lot of history into the trails beginnings, and how it was established. He has many black & white photos of the trail, view points, shelters etc. The stories he conveys, really lets the reader know how rural America was in 1947. You get this primarily thru the people he meets (country folks in cabins) city folk who don't know what they are doing (that hasn't changed.)He is a naturalist as well, and gives great descriptions of wildlife, and the destruction of our natural resources - even back then he was angry how our forests were (mis)managed He would turn over in his grave if he saw what 65 years have done.By todays' standards, his hiking gear would be considered grossly inept. It is wonder he made it all because his woeful 'equipment" , poorly marked trails, getting lost numerous times, and at times, bush-whacking the trail to get by.He hiked the trail to "Get the Army out of my system". He also lost his best friend fighting on Iwo Jima, which affected him profoundly, as he never married nor got very close to anyone.Getting resupplied was another obstacle he faced. The list of reasons why he should have never made it are endless. Even when he was done, and wanted get credited for it (and published) no one believed him. He was grilled for 3 1/2 hours by a major publisher to authenticate his 'story.btw .. he was also the FIRST person to hike the trail North to South!! And to top that off, on his 50th anniversary of his hike, he did it AGAIN.. at the age 79. His trail name was the "Crazy One". The guy is tough as nails and probably gargles with peanut butter!! Great Read.Thank you Earl!

. . . and your Patron Saint, if you are a thru-hiker, or aspire to be a thru-hiker, or a section hiker, or a one-time visitor who will never forget the experience.This one has a special place in my affections. If you only buy one account of an Appalachian Trail thru-hike, this has my most emphatic, enthusiastic recommendation. If you've made a list of many such accounts to consider, I make the identical recommendation for starting with this one. The original AT thru-hiker's original thru-hike, on a poorly maintained post-WWII trail in 1948, with a degree of solitude and perseverance that humbles the rest of us, or at least it should. And what Earl V. Shaffer's thru-hike accomplished for the trail, and for everyone who's hiked it since, cannot be measured.

Nowadays it seems like everyone who thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail has written a book. Actually even pretenders like Bill Bryson (who hiked something like a quarter of it) would also write one. Of course, thru-hiking the AT is no small feat, and I respect anyone who has honestly done it and those who left a written account. But Earl Shaffer's book is something in its own category.For one thing, as you undoubtedly already know, Earl Shaffer was the first person to hike the entire AT. This in itself is legendary -- before him, this was simply not known to be possible. His accomplishment has played a role in spreading the "trail fever" and inspired thousands would-be thru-hikers.But this is a review about the book, so let me get to the point. This is in fact a surprisingly well written book. Earl Shaffer is actually a gifted writer (too bad he was too busy wandering in the mountains to leave us many volumes, but I am grateful for even this one). His narrative is free-flowing, like the mountain stream; his account is succinct, never dragging or boring, and he had a good sense of humor. He even sprinkled the book with his poetry (now, I am not one who "gets" poetry so I won't comment on that). And apparently he is also a pretty competent photographer, as the many pictures in this book illustrate (and there is a DVD of a slideshow of his photographs; I need to check that out some time).I really think the book is a quite remarkable literary achievement in its own right, even if you don't take into consideration of his historical achievement. Of course, when you do take that into consideration, you will realize it is truly a must-read if you are into the outdoors, and especially if you are planning to, or even fantasizing of, thru-hiking the AT some day (I am not saying I am, but hey you never know).

This book was written from notes of Earl Shaffer who thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail in 1948. Having been born in the '40's, I can relate to some of the terminology he uses, and the graciousness he experiences from rural people along the way. It is an EXCELLENT book based on the year he walked it...and the fact that in that year, some of the trail was still being "mapped" out.. Having read more recent books of travel on the AT, it, like so many things, appears to have become more commercialized, and the experiences less taxing, as more restaurants, lodging, etc. has sprung up along the trail, catering to hikers. I thoroughly enjoyed it!!!

I've read many books about hiking the AT, but this one is my favorite. Earl Shaffer was the first man to hike the entire AT in one season, from Georgia to Maine. He had only his army boots, a rucksack, a pot to cook in and a little money. He didn't even have a tent for most of his hike. This was decades before high-tech camping equipment, and I think the simplicity of his gear gave him more of a real feel for the trail than modern people experience.His writing style is laid back and humorous, and sprinkled with just the right amount of history as he wrote about the places he saw. I've hiked small portions of the AT, and can appreciate the many nights he camped in the cold and rain, and the huge mountains he crossed.What amazes me is that there are factions out there who doubt he actually walked the entire AT. His book includes some of the many photos he took of the shelters and vistas he saw along the way, and selections from a daily journal he kept during his voyage.Earl Shaffer was a tortured soul after his service in WWII, but his hike on the AT proves that spending time in the wilderness can heal and buoy up the spirit. This is a wonderful book, and a must-read for anyone who has ever thought about hiking the AT.

having a B.S. in chemistry and now finishing a M.S. in chemistry, solutions manuals are always helpful when you are doing your homework and can't quite get to the answer on your own. this solutions manual is slightly less "clear" on the work to get to the answer but nonetheless has 85-90% of the work on the paper for you to follow. being quantum chemistry, it's a must buy because you're never going to know everything but with this you can try to better understand it.

Otherwise, fits the bill for a student solutions manual. The problem answers are written in a decent-sized font so it is easy to read even though quite a few equations are complicated.

However, some of the problems from the book are ridiculous to begin with, so the solutions manual isn't necessarily helpful for them. The manual is in good quality.

This was the mid-1980's also, when visionaries, mystics and classic Catholic spirituality was on the wane in the United States. Devotional books as intense as Saint Faustina's had given way to more careful, distanced spirituality. So I put the book away.I came back to it several times over the years, and always found much to intrigue, inspire and challenge me. I found it again in a Eucharistic Adoration chapel a few months ago, and bought it for myself after using it to great effect in prayer in front of the Blessed Sacrament exposed. At this point, in my sixth decade of life, with classic Catholicism in full bloom wherever I look, I am finding it a wonderful book to deepen my knowledge of and relationship with Christ. I highly recommend it to Christians, especially Catholics, of all ages. When I first picked the book up in the 80's, Eucharistic Adoration was a dream from the past, as were novenas, the rosary, Benediction, and other devotions and practices of my childhood. Today's younger Catholics are fortunate to once again have ready access to all of the traditional and classic modes of prayer and devotion that have nourished the Catholic faithful over the centuries. This book was made for the ages -- and the Divine Mercy is now coming into Its own.

An incredible book. I read the first edition twice and this is my third time. There is so much here that it takes several reads to absorb it all. St Faustina was directed by Jesus and her Spiritual Advisor to keep a Journal and she did an execellent job. She quoted every word between her and Jesus and later Mary. It was interesting to see how Jesus worked with her and how Mary helped her a great deal. You get an understanding of how much we are loved and what Jesus had to do to redeem us. Seeing how much Jesus and Saint Faustina both suffered to save souls is enlightening and makes you deeply regret every sin. Saint Faustina was told many times to prepare the world for the second coming of Christ. It would be the end of the time of mercy and the beginning of the time of judgement. This book will help you get to heaven.

I'm a Protestant. No Catholics in my family, and never been to mass except for watching them on TV now and then. However, the Divine Mercy Chaplet grabbed me a couple of years ago after I saw it on EWTN, and ever since then I've been intrigued by it and Saint Faustina. When I first heard about her diary, I figured if I was going to learn about this lady I'd better do it right. No paperbacks with tiny print for me, thanks (Not that there's anything wrong with paperbacks or tiny print; I just enjoy other formats when I can get them--books are treasures. :-) ).Long story short, I'm so glad I did. It's extremely encouraging and overwhelming to see Faustina's testimony in her own words, and this book is absolutely beautiful. It even smells good. Anyone, Catholic or Protestant, who wants to delve into God's great mercy will like this. Even if someone doesn't agree with all Catholic doctrine, it's still awesome to see an example of God using someone many would consider "the least of these."

This is a real person's diary . . . and the intimate interior life of the soul of a young idealistic woman and her mystical experiences. It can beread or speed read through with the purpose of extracting the subtle tone of the writer's interior feelings and thoughts. It is a translation and hasbeen edited . To read this quickly without the intention of returning and reading it slowly through is a mistake (in my opinion) . I read it long agoin 2005 and was very impressed by it, although, it would have been useless to me if I had not, first, seen the dramatized life of the saint and understood both her childhood circumstances which give background to her sweet Diary writings, which she wrote in her own handwriting , in her own way, in some notebooks, for the purpose of her own spiritual growth. After her death,these writings were collected, put in order and nicely bound for the edification of us all. Her schooling was perhaps not up to the standard of expression for public consumption but the diary were her own writings in a notebook expressing her feelings as a Sister in a convent in Poland. It is a great source of inspiration to read and I warmly recommend it .

I have a regular paperback of Faustina's Diary, but it's thick and hard to handle. I really love the quality and ease of use of this version -- so very worth the extra money! It's much thinner, with thin pages (the paper is the kind used in a lot of Bibles) and a ribbon to keep my place. Of course, the Diary itself is very inspirational to read and well worth the time set aside to read it. It's like having a conversation with our merciful Savior, who lets us know how much He loves us and longs for us on every page!

This is a very well done children's book on an important world religion. It uses the narrative story of the Buddha's life to demonstrate the fundamental principles of Buddhism i.e. material life is characterized by suffering, the middle way between two extremes is best and there is a release from the cycle of suffering.Where children are concerned, it is a good story that captivates attention and sparks the imagination. This re-telling of the Buddha's life fits the bill and introduces many sound principles that apply to any religion e.g. ultimate satisfaction is not to be found in the material world, the way to deeper meaning is inward, suffering is largely caused by selfish desire, etc.In a diverse world, books like this can help to bridge important gaps. This one has a good story, principles, illustrations, etc. I highly recommend it.

My 4 year old girl is probably a bit confused when I take meditation breaks. Not only is this a great story to instill values but it seems to elucidate on the practice of meditation at a basic level and I think it was a eureka moment for her while I was reading that part. This is why Daddy meditates kind of thing. Excellent book I hope she doesn't get bored with it so I can read over and over again and habituate both of our minds! =)

A beautiful book. The art is just lovely. I really enjoyed it. That being said, I felt it was a little too advanced for my 3.5 year old. My 5 year old was very interested in drawings but it seemed a little too detailed for her even. I think the approach to take would be to read a few pages at a time and then talk about what you read and then read a few more the next night and talk about what you read..etc..etc...but not something to read all in one evening. A good buy regardless. You can always tuck it away until the time is right.

Wish I would have known that this book is not a standard left to right book for reading, but instead unfolds like a wall calendar to be read top to bottom.

the best children's book on the life of Gautama Buddha. There's some discrepancy on the details, but then again, every "school of thought" has their rendition of Gautama's life before enlightenment.

I bought this for a 4 and 6 year old, but the length and language are more at a 4th grade level. But it looks like a kids book, so I'm not sure if a 4th grader would be interested.

Most people that buy a book like this one are homeowners that need to fix their roof as a weekend project. This book is full of useless information; The author invested a few pages at the end of the book to write about slate repair and the method he uses is the one method that no slate professional recommends because it does not last. It's called the strap technique it looks bad and the strap bends by sliding ice and snow, causing the strap to bend and the slate to come off and possibly hit you on the head. Don't make the same mistake I made. This book is a waist of money. If you buy it you will end up using it to fix a rocking chair by sliding it under the short leg so that your chair stops rocking.

Great book for Campbell's collectors. Excellent condition.

Great, so much stuff in the book.

The book was a library throw away (as seen by its stickers ) and stated it was not the currant value of things so I am not sure how much it was off but it gave me some idea of what things had gone for. Disappointing but ...

it told me just what i wanted to know was very helpful in pricing my collection would recommend to anyone
