This is a really good book for little kids. It's full of bright, colourful illustrations and kids can follow the dots and follow Swift Walker's journey around the oceans. They learn about an animal at each location and the names of various country names that he passes through to reach the oceans. The summary at the end ties it all together with some new information.The cover is misleading. I was expecting an underwater adventure. Swift Walker does not go underwater and discover underwater creatures as the cover seems to indicate.

This was the perfect introduction to the names and locations of the world’s oceans. Swift Walker is a young boy who loves to move and as he’s out walking one day he finds himself exploring the six oceans on our planet. After a quick jaunt around the globe Swift finds himself at home just in time for dinner.This was the perfect level for preschool, Kindergarten and even first grade. It didn’t get too detailed so the story and information wasn’t bogged down. I tested the book out with my daughter and caught myself wondering if they book should have had more facts and details. However, I noticed that my daughter was super engaged and didn’t ask to skip sections or just flip the page in the middle of reading as she does with nonfiction books that do have more. I realized it was right where she needed it to be. It’s a simple introduction to the idea of geography and that while we have one big ocean we do break it down into smaller sections that share location and ecology. Working a fun character and silly story into the book made the information much easier for her to take in too. I think Swift will be recognizable to most kids. He can’t keep still and wants to set off on adventures.I would like to point out the font in the book (you can see it there on the cover with the subtitle). It’s a pretty traditional school font, kind of like D’Nealian. For kids learning to read and recognize letters these familiar and simple fonts are so important to have in books. As much as I love a beautiful font and fun with text elements in picture books they can make the reading experience frustrating and nearly impossible for emerging readers. The simplicity of this book would make this one a great shared reading experience with a parent and child or student and teacher. The illustrations are bright and colorful and make for a fun reading experience. I will say, I’m sorry librarians, it’s paperback. If you can tape it up and bear with it, it will be well worth it. As with a lot of these self published and small press books, you may have to hand sell them. Although with Swift Walker the covers are incredibly inviting, so they may sell themselves if you turn them face out on the shelf or on display.Ultimately the book was a lot of fun to read and offered a quick dip into the oceans of the world without overburdening young readers. It would make a great addition to collections that serve curious young minds that want to explore the world.

This series of books is fantastic! Books about science that feature children of color are sooo needed! There is such a dearth of this type of literature available. The illustrations are so cute and colorful and the subject matter is made even more interesting by the way the main character engages with it. Love love love!!!

I’m absolutely in love with these books. I love how the author writes about real geographic places across the world, and the illustrations reflect that. I’m looking forward to buying the next Swift Walker book! My boy loves them! I purchased 3 already!

My kids love Swift Walker and ask to read this one in particular again and again. Great details, engaging kids with details that make them ask questions and want to learn more! It is an excellent addition to my homeschooler's curriculum.

I am not Roman Catholic and bought this book out of curiosity to see what a current Catholic apologist would have to say about these people and their ideas. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. I did not have very high expectations and was skeptical about the fantasy format with its quirky idiosyncrasies as well as the openly Roman Catholic agenda of the author which made the confrontations very one-sided, but somehow it worked for me. I was able to accept it for what it was and let the fantasy elements move things along, and there was enough meat on the brief overviews of the philosophies of the ten protagonists to keep my attention and even learn from, but not so deep as to make it a chore to follow.

This book is a must for everyone who ever wondered what an encounter with a saint would be like. It has humor and drama as well as the human elements of sadness and joy. It is a wonderful book for everyone to add to their library.

Dr. Wiker does an excellent and creative job illuminating the uninformed, such as myself, to some of the significant minds in Western thought with whom I was unfamiliar, in a colorful and playful way, without being condescending, without the reader having to decipher the original texts or interpret their meaning. The logic and brilliance of his pairing becomes apparent quickly, although the setting in to the foil strategy, how Dr. Wiker sets it up does takes some time and patience to see where the author is going, but is most worthwhile. An excellent work, especially beneficial to the lay scholoar.

Given Van Lew's life arc, the story is a classically tragic one--a hero who struggles and is met with disappointment after disappointment in the years following her moment of greatness, the moment of her great contribution to a nation.One question I would have for author Veron is why she didn't tackle the question of whether Van Lew was abused by her caregiver/relative during her later years.Even if the author disputes that supposition, it would seem to be something to be addressed, given that Van Lew's journal seems to suggest it.That does not detract from the book's overall effect and importance. It's a must-read for those interested in Richmond history, unsung Civil War heroes (such as women and African Americans), and the complexities of a city and state that--to the surprise of many, I'm sure--were home to a strong pro-Union faction (loyalists). Interesting. She was a very brave and dedicated woman. She did not get enough recognition and thanks. I Han never even heard of her or woman like her before from history books. She risked her life and gave up so much.

Living in Richmond, I have heard lots of stories about this lady. I was born 3 blooks from her house, but I never ever realized the extent that she was involved with my two families on my Grandmothers side. If you like historical facts this is an eye opener.

Excellent. Lots of research and very we'll written.

Exciting author. Couldn't wait to read the next chapter. So much history that we don't know about--quite a story.

I have always been intrigued by creole cooking and this book really fill that need. A lovely book which has lots of photographs, tidbits of information, as well as been wonderfully written and with easy to follow cooking recipes.The book is divided into chapters covering starters, soups/bisques, stews, gumbo, veggies, shrimp/crawfish, rice/bean/corn, jamabalaya, fish, meat and sweets.But this is more than a cookbook, it is a story of life and love of cooking and the people, places and events that make it a special book

Best cookbook I've used in a long time! (I collect them). I love NOLA Creole cooking, always have. The reason I bought John's book was for some of the basic Louisiana recipes: red beans and rice, etouffee, corn bread, oven-baked grits. I started with the stone ground grits recipe and it is excellent! I added chicken broth (50-50 with water) and a little hot sauce before serving to liven it up, but the taste is quite excellent...grits were light, creamy and delicious. I love grits. And in case anyone might wonder, I served the grits surrounded with clams, shrimp and fish strained from a tomatoe-based clam broth...oh my was it divine. I added fresh-grated (aged) parmesan cheese, a dusting of parsley and a glass of white wine and Dear Hubs is a happy camper. Now am off to buy more clams <3

For years I have devoured (no pun intended) every cook book that Emeril Lagasse ever wrote. He was my go to person for N'Awlins food, but now ... well all I can say is move over Emeril cause John Besh is moving in! This is one of the best and easiest to use cook books I have ever read or cooked from. The man not only writes "southern" that resonates for this Florida Lady he also cooks pretty much the same way I do at home. He had me hooked from the moment I read this, "The holy trinity of New Orleans cooking is onion, celery, bell pepper. But it can be overplayed. We always have onions and celery in the house, but we don't worry if there's no bell pepper," and bless his heart many of these recipes don't even use that stinking pepper that just flat out gives my husband and I horrible heartburn every time I even attempt to stick it in anything. So far I have done a shrimp and sausage gumbo that was wonderful (see the picture on my FB page) and looked exactly like the picture in this book. Next up will be the crawfish beignets and perhaps the white squash and shrimp soup :) Too top that off, there is this "Besh Big easy is a deliberate paperback. I don't want it sitting around on your coffee table, I want it well used in your kitchen. I hope notes are made, photographs are splattered and the pages are frayed from constant use. I want you to cook, love and share the recipes on these pages without worrying about finding the right ingredients or mastering complicated culinary processes." Well I can darn sure promise Mr. Besh that that is exactly what I will do with this book and I already started that process by promptly buying a second one to gift my daughter with :) Now I just have to budget well so I can go out and buy his 3 other cookbooks. :)

This is a wonderful book for anyone interested in the type of New Orleans food that is made daily in the kitchens of the every day person. I am so glad that I bought this book before buying Besh's 'My New Orleans', which seems to be bigger in scope and I still want to get, but this one at least for me is an easy introduction to Big Easy cooking. The recipes are all very straightforward and just scream home comfort food and I love the stories he tells about the recipes and the people who inspired them or passed them along to him. I am so enamored with it, that I am forgoing the traditional Thanksgiving turkey this year and am going to play with a handful of recipes from this book instead, I am definitely feeling the Duck and Oyster Gumbo (there's only two of us for that holiday so there will be no uproar about the missing turkey!).With the weather getting cooler I am already working my way through the soups and stews chapters- that's another thing I really like about this cookbook, the chapters just make sense. A whole chapter just for the different Gumbos, another for Jambalayas, another for Stews- everything very easy to find.Just a really great cookbook overall and I can't wait to try out all these recipes and pick up some of his other books.

I love this book! I tagged about 10 recipes the first time I looked through it. I've made 3 so far, and they turned out great. Ingredients are easy to find for the ones I marked. We live in a rural area, so sometimes ingredients can be hard to find. Great explanations and pictures.

I love this book! I liked it so much I bought all John Besh's books. My wife and I love everything New Orleans and are Gumbo nuts. These are the best recipes, easy and delicious. I highly recommend this and My New Orleans as his two best books if you want to learn New Orleans Cuisine and it's history.

We are from Louisiana and my husband LOVES to try new out new recipes and these are perfect! We have young kids so keeping the menu child - appropriate is sometimes difficult with a pseudo-chef around. These recipes are very family friendly and delicious! Perfectly Cajun!

Lots of good looking photos. John Besh has a great voice talking about food and New Orleans. I would love to eat anything in the book. I'm getting hungry.

Fantastic cookbook. The recipes are definitely easier/quicker than some of the other Besh cookbooks, but every bit as delicious. A must-have for anyone who loves New Orleans cuisine.

I thought I knew it all by attending cinematography classes by some of the top professionals, absorbing everything on YouTube, putting into practice etc... I was surprised at how the author if those book simplified so many simple setups that I frequently over complicate. A great read and must have for a dp's library, but not worth a penny over $40.00 due to the book being very small page wise and the quality of the images is spotty and mostly black and white. Still 5 stars, because I actually got it cheap, thank you Amazon

It's undoubtedly a great book helping you to exemplify the relationship between exposure and lighting, no regret!

I'm very new to lighting for any film stock. My goal is to become more aware of how to light for film, mainly digitial stock. This books does provide extremely detailed information on lighting, such as footcandles, gamma, lighting terms and much more, but mainly in one chapter. It did provide detail about digital film lighting and standard photography lighting. I wish it gave more insight about "moods" but I learned a great deal. Downside, it's expensive for the material you get.

i like this book, i think this book about two or three own before me, but still good condition. help a lot with project on lighting stuff. college student you buy this

Maybe the best book on lighting ever.

This is a good book that I have been using in class, but the price just keeps creeping up and is now well beyond reasonable. This is a thin paperback, and the publisher would have sold several hundred copies to my students over the past years if the price was right (ca. $40!) I can't justify asking my students to spend nearly $200 (more at the College Bookstore) on this publication. It's really a shame and a tremendous disservice to the author, because I do consider this to be one of the best books on the subject!
