Cock's Fireforce is the definitive work on the Rhodesian Bush War. It reads like a great novel but tells the no-holds barred truth about a war that the West would like to forget. Rhodesia and South Africa were under siege from Soviet and Red Chinese supported communist guerrillas. Terrorists, CT's, or terrs to the Rhodesians. The terrorists were supported by the Combloc and also recieved material support from the UN. The Rhodesians recieved NO help from the US Carter administration, in spite of the fact that over 300 US citizens went to Rhodesian and joined their army to fight the CT's.This book covers and important chapter of the East-West/Cold War struggle that turned into a "real" war in Rhodesia.

I just finished reading Chris Crocks' "Fireforce" about his military service in Rhodesia, now known as Zimbabwe, in the `70s. This memoir is interesting for the honesty that is sometimes a bit jarring. In addition, it gave me a look into the military life of another country. Some things seem to be the same in the military, no matter the country. Others are a bit different, such as a rather casual attitude displayed by his superiors toward pot and drugs. This book also makes an accidental comparison between the economies and the money available to the military of the country of Rhodesia and a country like the US. I do not think that the US would tolerate the lack of resources available to the troops, or, at least, I hope not. Crocks served for three years in the Rhodesian Light Infantry and he was in combat for most of that time. He has my sympathies, as I served for one year in combat, and I was exhausted by the end. I cannot imagine another two years of not knowing if I might live or die another day. In addition, I found it interesting to read about the many references to music, politics, the Vietnam War, and other influences from the US. This book is very readable and has an abundant supply at the end of ancillary material, as well as a much-needed glossary to explain many of the unknown (by me) terms used in the book. I recommend this for anyone interested in military subjects.

The best book to come out of the Rhodesian Bush War by far. Fantastic.

I gave this four stars because, to me, it's good but not great. To be sure, my expectations concerning a treatment of theodicy and the goals of this book may not coincide.I was searching for an answer to the question, why is God silent or inactive when mean people attack the innocent. Maybe a little of that near the end of the book. Don't get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoyed the way he weaved a study of Joseph into every chapter, and I got some great ideas from that, BUT, there are those in church who struggle with the issue of the innocent suffering and I cannot suggest this book as a resource.

One of the best books I've ever read. My husband has cancer and has suffered so greatly, this book has given us much needed wisdom which strengthens us. I will keep this book and re-read it always. Sometimes truth is hard to swallow but non the less it is truth and with that a Peace follows. Thank you Bob Russell.

There is so much pain because every action has a reaction. My 14 year old son was killed by an automobile . He was in the highway at a spot which the driver did not see in time to stop. My question, or perhaps my dilemma is 'can God's presence bring solace in the agony of the loss of my son?' And the answer for me is 'yes'. He does not ask me not to grieve, but holds me close to His heart as I grieve. This book leads me through the history of God's faithful action through thousands of years of His continual presence in both tragedy and triumph. Thank you Pastor Russell for your testimony.

We did the study based on the movie and book "Acts of God" in our men's bible study group. The analogies based on the story of Joseph hit some major struggles of trials we endure in the modern day. Highly recommend the book and the study. The movie is very moving and well worth watching.

Great book with good material for small group discussion. Lots of deep quesiton discussion and the way it uses the life of Joseph to parallel is solid! NOTE: I wouldn't use the Travelers guide with it. It is really confusing and hard to follow. .

Acts of God is a book about suffering and answers a big question: why do some things happen/why would God allow this? I would recommend watching the movie and reading this book.

Enjoyed this book thoroughly; really gave me a clear perspective on God's love for us.

I've been a fan of Jim's unique and unsettling visions since I first encountered JIM magazine in the late 80's, but I have to admit, it took some time for Frank to grow on me. At first I was more enamored of Mr. Woodring's illustrated text pieces such as Horse Sinister, and his lucid dream inspired pieces like What The Left Hand Did. But eventually Frank and The Unifactor won me over.One thing I've heard people say about Jim's imagery is that it resonates with them in a strange way, with a slight tug of deja vu at the base of the brain, like they've experienced it somewhere before. Perhaps in a long forgotten dream, a repressed childhood memory or a hallucination experienced during a severe childhood fever. Count me among them. When I read Jim's work, I often feel a sense of strange memories *almost* being recalled, but remaining tantalizingly out of reach. It is as though the art is merely a "port" that my eyeballs "plug into," allowing mysteries of the universe to flow directly into my subconscious from a source behind the page.Jim's work isn't just incredible storytelling and unique visual style, it's a complete language unto itself. The best way I can describe it is that Jim's work forces the reader's brain to employ different "muscles" for comprehension than any normal human is used to exercising (at least in Western culture). The literal brain is gently lulled into stasis by Jim's hypnotic linework, while other faculties such as intuition and the ones that allow us to "read" facial expressions and detect emotion and meaning in patterns and designs come to the fore, but are used in a more all-encompassing way to "read" an entire story with a degree of depth and nuance that mere words and pictures alone could never hope to convey. -And Jim does this which such dexterity that he is able to abandon words altogether! Yikes!Anyhoo...In my opinion, Jim's narrative and artistic powers grew exponentially with Weathercraft. And they've multiplied again here with Congress of the Animals. I was at a chain bookstore reading a 2011 compilation of comic art and came upon an excerpt from Congress of the Animals and was busting my gut laughing. So I searched it out and found it here on Amazon. It is really an enjoyable journey, communicates well and cuts straight to a subconscious part of the brain. It was shipped quickly and I'm glad I bought it. Now I liked Jim's facebook page and am amazed at his ability to communicate through his art. I agree a tad with the other reviewer's comments about the dust jacket synopsis, but still I feel the "reading" (no words or text in the story) of the book wasn't tainted by my reading Jim's synopsis. I think it may have even clarified and increased the accuracy of the communication of the story line, although I agree that it was by no means essential. I am glad Jim put it in the book because I feel that, as the author if he wants to include that as a part of his art, then it becomes an essential part of the total package. I particularly enjoyed the chronological continuity that the book has, and feel that it is generally an upbeat story.

When following the strange world of Jim Woodring's Congress of the Animals you have to pay attention. The drawings of the strange and sometimes comical and sometimes horrifying creatures will send you off course as to the story line. Hence I had to read this silent and strange graphic novel three times in order to really grasp its meaning and purpose. Woodring brings us the human conditions of everyday life as played out by this strange Congress of Animals. We see greed, anger, laziness, cruelty, sadness and happiness. Does our hero learn his lessons through his misadventures and mistakes? Well you'll have to read this silent without words graphic novel. The use of these rather strange characters only emphasizes the lessons Woodring is trying to impart on his audience. His antics of drawing certain characters certainly at times seem to overplay what he is trying to convey. That's why sometimes I got so caught up in the looks of these strange creatures I lost track of the true story line. The author conveys the true sense of his lessons in humanity while using strange almost out of this world animal-like creatures that do in the end teach us a lesson to be well learned. Genius portrayal of human traits, five stars without hesitation.

Gorgeous, humorous, and thought-provoking.

Jim Woodring's work is at the sublime and quirky end of the graphic art spectrum. I believe that in the future he will be looked upon as at least as important as Robert Crumb, who also is truly wonderful - though in many ways more creaticvely cautious than Woodring himself. In this volume, Frank is again at centre-stage throughout and goes through a series of startling escapades before unexpectedly meeting a creature who appears to be his soul-mate. Don't you want that sort of outcome for Frank? The guy needs love and he certainly gives as good as he gets. One wonders if the honeymoon will continue in Woodring's next volume, just out.

Jim Woodring is worth a second look. And a third. The details and clever pacing of this book, like his others, rewards additional viewings. Especially nice about Congress of the Animals is the quality printing. The artwork looks elegant on the creamy paper. Looking forward to what comes next.

This is a great book for review or for someone who wants to seriously learn more about electronics have not found anything better,

For a little background, I own a previous paperback edition of this book from years ago which is buried in storage. As I look into making several projects now that my 3D printer build is complete, I find myself in need of a refresher. I was overjoyed to see a new edition of this book had been released and was available on kindle. Now 20 minutes and 14 pages into the book I've given up and will be buying the paperback edition. In those first 14 pages I encountered 2 places where example calculations should have been displayed and an instance where the symbol for a battery was to be shown. All three situations just had a blank space with references in the text to the missing information the only indication that something was missing . As a result it's not worth my time to continue since I'm not willing to deal with the frustration of this which I assume will continue through out the text.It's a shame too, since I thought the index was well laid out, liked the hot links within the text that take you to other referenced sections of the book and know that the content of the paper edition is probably outstanding. Thank goodness that Prime will get the physical book to me quickly.04/20/16 Edit: I've raised the rating of this book from 1 to 3 since I received the physical edition of the book which is awsome and I realize the 1 rating was a little harsh. That being said, I firmly believe that if you are going to publish a kindle edition of a nonfiction book, it must be identical to the physical edition. Someone purchasing the kindle edition should be able to receive the exact same information in a kindle edition as in a physical edition. If you can't publish a book like that, I don't think it should be published as a kindle at all.I've also added a couple of images from the physical and the kindle edition of the book to illustrate the issue that I'm talking about.

I teach an introductory class in electronics at a small university. The class is intended for scientists, not electrical engineers; so the emphasis is on basic knowledge, practical troubleshooting skills, and design. I've used the Second Edition of this book a number of times with some satisfaction simply because the book covered most of what I needed. It was a great reference book for just about anything someone would want to know about electronics.However, there were some notable gaps in the Second Edition that I typically teach in an electronics class; specifically, I teach a section on transducers and microcontrollers. With the Third Edition, there are new sections on sensors (transducers) and microcontrollers, and now this book has everything in it that I could possibly want to teach. I've been using the Arduino for class the last couple of years because most scientists would use a microcontroller to design a piece of equipment instead of discrete gates and logic chips. So with these new additions, I cannot imagine any other book that would be needed for a class. So from this point forward, I will be using this book for EVERY electronics class that I teach.The detail in the book is in-depth enough for folks who want to know how everything works, BUT the person who wants to skip past the theory can certainly do that and STILL learn a lot from this book. As I teach, I tend to skip around within the book to cover what is important to me. The chapters are designed to be somewhat modular; for instance, I can teach the basics of analog electronics and transistors and then move to microcontrollers without necessarily having to spend a lot of time time on discrete logic chips.There are lots of illustrations and graphs; so those who need to see something to understand it will be pleased. There is also a lot of detail on practical things like motors that generally are NOT in an electronics book.The sections on household electricity are excellent and very useful, since some equipment/inventions would require mains power. So knowing how to be safe around it and how to use it properly is important.I haven't read every single page yet and marked it up. In a book this size, I am sure there will be some typographical errors along the way and maybe even a mistake or two in explaining something. But I would still say this book is the BEST practical book on electronics out there. Kudos to Mr Scherz and Dr. Monk. You've taken an excellent book and modernized it in a great way for the current day.In short, for a 1000 page book, anyone who buys this is getting a bargain. It's the BEST.

About the Author

Phoebe M. Bailey was born the youngest of 15 children in a family from Huntington, Long Island, New York. Season the chicken with salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes. Brown quickly in oil. Remove chicken from skillet and set aside. 2. Brown sausage in drippings. Remove sausage from skillet and set aside. 3. Add onions and garlic and stir into drippings. Cook, stirring constantly for about 4 minutes. 4. Add stock, seasonings, chicken, and sausage. My brother love the book

This cookbook is one of the worst that I've seen. There are very few recipes that would be considered African American. In fact I suspect this wasn't originally, but was a small town church cookbook in which a "traditional" section with a few African American recipes was added before each regular chapter and a history section was added at the end. There are very few "traditional" recipes and many are minor variations on each other. For example, in the first "traditional" section, there were couple gumbo recipes and three collard green recipes - that was it. There were three pound cake recipes in the traditional cake section. The additional recipes are mundane everyday recipes, many using prepared foods - hamburger casseroles, meatloaf, cool whip pudding desserts, etc. What is Fettuccine Alfredo doing in an African American cookbook? I feel ripped off.

Wonderful. I use a lot of recipes; very informative general information. One of the few great purchases I have made.

This is a book consisting of mundane recipes that require very few ingredients. If you like black history, this book has a lot of interesting articles and quotes from past Black Americans. One of the downfalls of this cookbook is that in the slavery era the Black folk's had very little seasonings and availibility of different ingredients that add so much the African American cooking. Some of the recipes do have modern ingredients included, but, it doesn't taste like traditional southern black food. If you are looking for good recipes then I suggest buying THE BLACK FAMILY REUNION FAMILY COOKBOOK or La BELLE CUISINE. Listen to me and you won't be stuck with a cookbook that you will not use very much.

I love this book, I purchased it for my granddaughter and she loved it! It not only gives you great recipes but historical facts about them, as well as information about the Underground Railroad, quotes from Harriet Tubman and Lyrics from Spirituals. This is not just a African-American cookbook but a cookbook that everyone can enjoy and learn from!

This is a great beginners cookbook. Just be mindful and substitute with healthier products.

Great recepies and easy instructions to follow. I love to cook and learned at a very young age by watching cook shows on TV! My collection of cookbooks include all types of cooking from many countries. Just wish this book was available in hard copy.

A must have if you want to cook the soul food meals.

No page numbers and some pages were very difficult to view. Text was off the sides of the page and I had to keep changing font and screen sizes to view all of the content. Worst e-book I have ever used.

Great variety around the single theme of implementing Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) makes this book both interesting and useful. Each chapter tells a unique story with ERM related gems discovered and described from the laboratory of real life. Everyone with a desire to implement or understand ERM can benefit from the information shared by a diverse group of organizations. This book’s balance of descriptive writing with proper technical rigor gives readers a sense of learning and confidence that knowledge gained can be used in practical daily activities.

If you are using this for school textbook, I do not recommend this book for digital/Kindle. The graphs, charts, and tables are not legible. Tables have content cut off. You cannot increase the size to see diagrams.

Implementing Enterprise Risk Management is a terrific book of case studies from which you can learn practical applications of enterprise risk management, It is rich in the number and variety of companies, which often have varied approaches. ERM can be complicated and often subject to wide interpretation, so it is valuable to see how others utilize ERM as a management tool. I would highly recommend the book for both those learning about ERM and those searching for a deeper dive.

Horrible for kindle, the PDF does not show page numbers making doing assignments awful. Repeat, do not get this for Kindle.
